SHOULD PARENTS SET UP
THEIR OWN STANDARDS?
Kvcry parent has a right to
bring up her children as she
thinks best. But, when her stand
ards are so distinctly different
from those of other parents, Is
she being fnir to her children
when she refuses to modify her
standards to be more. In line
with the standards of other par
ents? That is the problem that Is
facing the young teenage girl
who wrote:
(Q) "I am nearly 16 and my
parsntt art strict. I can't go to
any parties If there are boys.
Wherever I go, I have to be
the first to leave. I can't even
go dancing at our parish
church. I feel awful when I
tell my girl friends I can't go
here or there. I tried talking
to my mother but the just
won't listen. She says she will
run her house the way she
wants to and let the other par
ents run theirs the way they
want to. I don't think this Is
fair to me, do you?"
(A) No. I do not think It is fair
to a teenager to make her so dif
ferent that she feels Inferior or
to deprive her
of the fun her
friends are

a different light.
Should Respect Judgment
He might also be able to con
vince her that she is depriving
you of the good times your
friends arc having and make her
realize that she Is being un
necessarily strict with you
Surely she respects her minis

will listen to him even If you
can make no headway when you
talk to her,
Have you ever asked any of
the boys you know to come to
your home to meet your parents''

It is certainly worth the try.

EASY ON THE TONSILS. DOCTORS
Dr. Brady
One of the finest physicians I
have ever known took me to task
attain the oilier day, after an in
terval of 15
years, for my
persistent a d
vocacy of the
d i a t h e r m y
(electro - coag
ulation) treat
ment of infect
ed tonsils and
my tiresome re
iteration that
tonsillec t o my
is too danger
ous and therefore unjustifiable
treatment to employ for merely
enlarged or hyperthrophied ton
sils. In my opinion, based on ex
perience, observation and study,
the minor operation called ton
sillotomy, in whih the physician
instantaneously slices off the ob
structing portion of tonsil, is ef
fective and comparatively safe,
if surgery is necessary.
Long before the profession
heard of tonsillectomy the rou
tine surgical procedure for the
treatment nf enlarged tonsils,
whether infected or not, was ton
sillotomy. In the first year or two of my
practice in Penn Yan my brother
Andy, who resembled me, paid
me frequent visits and his week's
waijes I wasn't collecting
enough to buy hay for Topsy
complained of a sore throat. Now
for years Andy had suffered a
painful attack nf quinsy nearly
every spring. I had a look at his
throat and told him we had bet
ter do something about it right
away. "O.K." I swabbed a little
local anesthetic solution on his
tonsils and after a few minutes
sliced off a fillet from each ton
sil. Andy said it didn't hurt as
much as filling a tooth. That eve
ning he went to a dance and im
personated me and had a won
derful time. It took weeks to
recover my dignity afterward.
But the point of this report is
that Andy never had another at
tack of quinsy. And he had bet
ter confirm this story, if any
body cross-examines him about
it, or else!
In a clipping (from a Hartford
paper, I infer) quotes Dr. Alfred
L. Burgdorf, director of the U. S.
Public .Health Service, "as fol
lows: "Until about ten years ago
practically everybody had
their tonsils whacked out be
fore they were old enough to
talk; in those days people
thought that tonsils caused the
grippe, the grout, and the hot
and cold running flushes.
"Now we know that tonsils
are one of our best defenses
against disease.
"Children, however, should
not have their tonsils taken
out in the summer, as tonsil
lectomy increases a child's
chance of contracting polio.
"On the whole tonsils should
be left in the throat."
If anybody wants my opinion,
I'd say that children's tonsils
should not be "taken out" in the
winter either.
In an early issue or I had
better say for an early issue
I'll give one or two reasons why
the dangerous major operation
called tonsillectomy should not
be perpetrated on children at
any time in the year.
