Portland for their 1953 conven
tion site and reelecting officers
for the coming year. 1

tlemen's association convention
closed Wednesday with the re
election of Harry I. Stearns.

with C. J. Cecil, Burns, first vice
president; Garland Meador,
Prairie City, second vice presi
dent, and J. B. Appling, Burns,
treasurer.
Precautions Told
Dr. A. W. Beagle, Portland,
district chief of the Bureau of
Animal industry, told the closing
session his organization is taking
a great many precautionary
measures to prevent sabotage to
the nation's meat industry
through germ warfare.
Dr. Beagle said hoof and
mouth disease could be introdcu
ed and spread widely by an
enemy agent.

legislature to provide more

Atom Submarine
Construction To
Start Next Month
Washington (U.R) The Navy
announced Thursday that it will
lay the keel next month of an
atom-powered submarine which
it hopes will be merely the first
of a whole fleet of long-ranging,
hard-hitting atomic warships.
History's first atom -driven
sub, already named the "Nau
tilus," will be built by the Elec
tric Boat Co. at Groton, Conn.
The Navy said it will announce
later the exact date of the keel

Because atomic fuel packs
such tremendous amounts of
energy and because it does not
require oxygen as other fuels
do, an atomic submarine theo
retically should be able to cruise
under water indefinitely. It
would have to replenish its oxy
gen supply only as often as
necessary to meet needs of the

stroyers as well as subs in the

Ashland Ten young actors,
all of them experienced 1 n
Shakespearean roles and most
of them having professional ex'
perience, have been chosen for
the board and room scholarships
offered by the Oregon Shake
spearean festival this summer
Four of the actors were with
the company last season, and
three were holders of the first
scholarships offered by the fest
ival association in 1951. All
others will be new here.
Four To Return
Returning to the company as
scholarship holders are Bill Ball,
Carnegie Tech drama student;
Paul Reinhardt, now a graduate
student in drama and assistant
to the costumier at the Univer
sity of Texas; and Paul Kliss,
Buhl, Id., who spent last fall
and this past spring with the
Vining repertory company in
Ashland. Bill Olyer, member of
the '51 company, has been a
warded a scholarship this year
for the first time. He is a Stan
ford Ph.D. candidate.
Included among the new hold
ers of the scholarships this year
will be Arthur J. Carnes, a
young English actor who has
just completed a season with the
Arena Stage company in Wash
ington, D. C. Carnes has played
with the Shakespearean festi
val at Stratford and the Birm
Ingham (England) repertory
company, among others.

lish a corset shop. You handle

shop staffed by saleswomen with

What's In a Name?
Rhett Mulligan is the name of
a young woman drama student
of Manhattan. Rhett is definitely
a first name intended for a man.
As for example, Rhett Butler of
"Gone With the Wind" fame.
Before embarking upon her stage
career Miss Mulligan should
change her first name to Mona,
Marlene, Mauvoureen, Myra,
Maureen or something distinct'

think of a great actress who had
