Asking.
Q. Does Mario Lanza earn
more money than Caruso did? A
Caruso at his peak was paid
$2,000 a performance by the
Metropolitan Opera Company.
Then he had quite an income
from records. Nevertheless,
Lanza probably tops him as to
income. However, the dollars
that Lanza earns only buy one
third of what Caruso's dollars
did. Besides, Lanza has to pay a
much higher percentage in in
come tax. Q. Did Joan Crawford
ever co-star with John Gilbert?
A. Joan and John appeared to
gether in a film titled, "Twelve
Miles Out." A great film, but
definitely not a love story. Was
about rum runners of the pro
hibition era.
Collegians.
As for Yale men In major
league ball: In addition to "Tots"
Murphy, there were Broaca, of
the Yankees, Bruce Caldwell, of
Cleveland, and Jim O'Rourkc,
with Cincinnati. However, none
of these set the major leagues on
fire. How about picking an all
time team of collegians who
played in the major leagues?

their Superfortress, and only
one remembered abandoning the
bomber.
The men were brought here
aboard the cruiser USS Toledo,
which rescued them from the
sea between Santa Catalina and
San Clemente islands Tuesday
after a Marine Corsair 'igh er
rammed into the wing of their
B-29, sending both planes hurt
ling into the water.
Body Recovered
The Toledo also recovered the
body of one of the 14 victims.
Another survivor was plucked
from the water by a Coast Guard
PBM flying boat and flown to
the Naval hospital here.
None of the five men taken
aboard the cruiser could recol
lect leaving the Corsair, and
only one, S-Sgt. Lawrence L.
McLaughlin, Dayton, O., the
flight engineer, remembered ab
andoning the bomber.
He apparently was the only
survivor in the forward part of
the B-29. McLaughlin said he
felt a "violent crash" and seiz
ed the nose wheel of the Super
fort, letting it down.
Dived Through Hatch
Then he dived out the wheel
hatch, he said and the next thing
he knew, he was in the water.
All the men were in good con
dition, but they were taken to
the Naval hospital for observa
tion. First Lt. Emmett E. Muter
spaw, Jr., Middletown, O., said
he also felt the violent Jir of
the crash. He and three' other
survivors were in a pressurized
compartment in the rear of the
bomber.
"After the impact, I tried to
depressurize the cabin," he said.
"I grabbed for the cable. I dived
forward and rolled against the
aft turret. The next thing I
knew, all I could sec was the
sky."
