Junior Club Honors
Director at Meeting;
Award Contest Prizes
Mrs. H. G. Wilson, director of
the Degree of Honor Junior club,
was honored at a meeting of the
club held May 12 at the Lincoln
school gymnasium. Darlene
Morrow, president of the club,
presented Mrs. Wilson with a
corsage in recognition of her
appointment as past state presi
dent of the Degree of Honor
lodge in Oregon.
Mrs. Wilson was named to the
office at the recent state con
vention by Mrs. Frances Buell
Olson, national president. Mrs.
Wilson served as state secretary
for the convention for the 13th
year.
In responding to the club gift,
Mrs. Wilson told of her trip to
the convention. Mrs. Hogue also
spoke.
Guests at the meeting were
Mrs. R. Frye, Marjories and Jan
et. Darlene Morrow was present
ed her third sunshine stripe.
. A May basket contest was
held, with Darlene Morrow win
ning first prize, Carol Boswell,
second; Kenneth Durkee, third
and Raymond Kanapask, honor
able mention. Barbara Frye re
ceived a prize for bringing
guests.
Mrs. Norman Gail, Gold Hill,
gave a whistling solo and Lin
da Durkee led the club yell.
Mrs. Wilson read a poem and a
prayer. ' Linda Durkee assisted
with refreshments.
A picnic is planned for June
14.

K. Todd Jr., a Willamette unl
versity student from Portland
drowned Tuesday in the surf
near Otter Rock 85 miles south
of the mouth of the Columbia
river on the Oregon coast.

appealed in a letter to his news
paper for more letters from the
people back home.
One of his first letters, post
marked from Lakewood, N. J.,
came from a nine-year-old girl
who enclosed her picture and
said: "I don't have much exper
ience writing to men, but I'd
like to try.'

of Phoenix Presbyterian church
will meet Friday, May 16, at the
church. A covered dish dinner
will be served Bt 6:30 p.m. with
a business meeting and social

mack visited recently at the
home of her daughter and fam
ily, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Dillon.
Mr. and Mrs. John Zimmerlee

Mrs. Richard Zimmerlee from
Butte Falls attended a family re
union Sunday, May 4, at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. William
Zimmerlee in Shady Cove.
Recent visitors at'the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Dave Bregren were
his brother Harry and several
friends from Tillamook.
Mrs. Ernest Smith is hobbling
around on crutches as a result
of an automobile accident.
A pot luck dinner was held
May 5 at Whiskey Springs mark
ing Craig Menter's and Renee
and Ralph Malloy's birthdays.
Children attending were Ricki
and Kenny Bregren, Shirley and
Mickie Coughlin, Debbie Dillon,
Bruce Beeman, Mike Burton,
Kathie and Mark Ronayne, Gary
and Richi Price, Danny Edmond
son, Kerry Lee Menteer and the
honored guests. Also present
were the Mesdames Roy Men
teer, Ed Malloy, Roy Price, Bill
Edmondson, Louise Coughlin,
Dave Bregren, Bruce Burton,
Bill Bonayne, C. W. Dillon.
Jackie Simms, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Jack Simms, entered a
Medford hospital recently for
medical attention.
Bob Beeman is recovering af
ter being released rom a Med
ford hospital recently where he
was treated for a wrenched back
muscle.
Butte Falls town team started
out their league season by beat
ing Prospect 5 to 1 at Prospect
last Sunday.
Among local people going to
Prospect"ior the game were Mr.
and Mrs. Jess Rodgers, Mr. and
Mrs. Bud Irwin and daughter,
Mr. and Mrs. Anzel Conley, Mr.
and Mrs. Everett Moore, Mr. and
Mrs. Walker and boys, Mrs. C.
Thomasonn and Mr. and Mrs.
Sizemore. Wives of the players
attending were Mrs. Henry Ty
gart and children, Mrs. Floyd
Mattern and ,BeverIy, Mrs. Bill
Rodgers and boys. Mrs. Edna
Zimmerlee and children, and
Mrs. Burrel Facey and children.
A dance was sponsored Friday
evgning in the grade school gym
by the baseball team. Funds
raised will be used for equip
ment. '
Mrs. Elmo Ellefson was taken
to a hospital recently for medi
cal attention.

Senate sent to the White House
a bill to protect "smokey bear,"
the bespectacled bruin who begs
motorists not to be careless with
matches and start forest fires.
"Smokey" appears in adver
tisements pointing out dangers
of forest fires and the bill pro
tects him from commercializa
tion by requiring the Associa
tion of State Foresters and the
Advertising Council to be con
sulted when his name and like
ness are used.

school male quartet entertained
at the May meeting of the Com
munity club with a program of
spirituals and modern songs
The group includes Ron Prosise,
lead; Lowell Shearin, tenor; Bob
Hurd, baritone and Gary Keener,
bass. Also appearing were Misses
Jill Gast, Beverly Hild and
Maurean Brabbin in a baton
routine, with piano accompani
ment by Mrs. Roscoe Talbott.
The girls are members of Bliss
Heine s Juniors.
At the following business ses
sion plans for booths at Phoenix
May Festival and Talent Jam
boree were discussed and Mrs.
R. F. Ditsworth was appointed
chairman of arrangements.
Clay Hurd, president of the
youth club, announced a benefit
dance to be held at the school
house the night of May 16 as an
aid in the campaign of secretary
Betty Hopper, who is being spon
sored for queen of the May Fes
tival by the Phoenix Youth club.
Mr. Hurd also said donations of
cake or sandwiches by ladies of
the community would be appre
ciated. Refreshments were
served by Mrs. Albert Gandt, and
Mrs. Ralph Reed.
Mrs. D. B. Brobbin is reported
improved after a short period of
hospitalization. Lonnie Nichol
son is making a satisfactory re
covery from a recent operation.
Recent dinner guests of the Ed
Hilds of Wagner Creek road
were their daughter, Mrs. Walter
Whitmore, of Coleman Creek
road and a grandson, Seaman
Donald Whitmore, who was
home on 20-day leave from his
Navy station, Norfolk, Va.
Sunday guests at the home of
Clinton Hoppers were their sis
ter and brother-in-law, Mr. and
Mrs. Harold Dollard of Grants
Pass.
About 450 guests attended the
Eagle Point flower show, also the
style show sponsored by the
Town and Country dress shop
held in the local Grange hall
April 24. A silver tea, also a sale
of vegetables, flowers and shrubs
was held in connection. Other
clubs of the Siskiyou district
who participated were Phoenix,
Central Point, Butte Falls and
Medford. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest
Dahack of Tiller had a table of
most choice camellias of about
every known variety and color.
The "chuckle" table of sundry
antiquated articles used as flower
containers, which in their hey
day were used for different pur
poses caused much comment, and
amusement. The Rogue Valley
Nurseries furnished potted flow
ers and greenery for the beauti-
tui stage setting. Diane Putman
naa a card table display of a gar
den wedding with small dolls
and everything complete. The
grades of the local school who
made the posters for the show
each won potted plants as prizes,
The grand finale in the evening
was the male models "from
Paris, New York City and Los
Angeles," enacted by Arthur
Tappan, Otto Nagcl and Jake
Brown, with Mrs. Frank Cham
berlain as annotator. All in all
the whole show was a grand suc
cess and Mrs. Otto Nagel, chair
man of the Garden club thanked
all who took part in making it
so.

Medal of Honor for giving his
life in a heroic one-man stand
on a Korean battlefield, the
Army announced Wednesday.
The 22 year - old reservist
walked Into murderous gunfire
to stall an attack by Communist
troops and permit his buddies
to withdraw i n comparative
safety.

Essebagger was credited with
single-handedly inflicting heavy
losses on the enemy and disrupt
ing their advance before he fell
mortally wounded near Popsu
Dong, Korea, on April 25, 1951.
Capt. .Holger H. Thompson,
Salinas, Calif., Essebagger's com-
pany commander, said the young
hero accounted for an estimated
14 enemy killed and an untold
number of wounded."
