From Camp White
By SID HOLLINGSWORTH
Mothers day and Hospital day
were both remembered here
with garlands and bouquets of
flowers for the chapel and in'
firmary. A huge floral offering
of wild azaleas was brought in
Saturday from the Jerome Prai
rie Garden club under sponsor
ship of Mrs. Edward Ganvung
of Grants Pass. They were dis
tributed In a highly decorative
manner.
Aspecial incident In the in
firmary was the arrival on May
12 of a brand new refrigeration
unit for preserving the penicil
lin and other mediclnals. It had
been on order and was deliver
ed, appropriately, on Hospital
day.
In view of the restricted char
acter of hospitalization at Camp
White, and as a special review
on this occasion, Manager Paul
A. Hatton consented to clarify
the situation prevailing in these
words:
"The Veterans Administra
tion's predominant function at
Camp White is the furnishing of
domiciliary care for those suf
fering from permanent and
chronic disabilities which are
disabling and not susceptible of
cure or improvement by hospit
alization. "However, In order to pro
vide proper care to domiciled
members it Is necessary to op
erate on a permanent basis a
medical division composed of a
professional staff of doctors and
nurses, an infirmary, an x-ray
department, a dental clinic, a
surgery, a medical laboratory,
a dietitian, a social service de
partment and such other auxil
iary medical personnel as may
be required.

"The purpose of this medical
department is to take care of
the routine medical needs of the
members; to take care of them
when they become ill and to per
form emergency surgery as re
quired. It is not the station's mis
sion to provide Intensive hos
pital treatment or to provide
treatment for the care of those
diseases and conditions for
which hospitals have been es
pecially provided."
One new feature of the pro
gram at Camp White is the es
talishment of a complete phys
ical medicine rehabilitation de
partment which, according to'
Hatton, "will begin as soon as
trained personnel to operate the
the department can be recruit
ed." Preparations for this set up
have been under way for some
time. The special educational
therapy and corrective therapy
in addition to physiatherapy
treatment presently given.
Seme Idea of the number of
people who visit Camp White
daily is shown in a recent tabu
lation based upon a count by the
guards at the entrance. An av
erage of 223 cars and 48 trucks
daily was reported.

The American Legion, the
VFW and DAV find a fourth
member group well established
at Camp White. It is called the
Veterans of World War I, with
national status and headquart
ers at Cleveland, O.
Barracks 14 of the World War
veterans came into being at the
domiciliary Sept. 25, 1051. It
now has an enrollment of 100
members and bears the distinc
tion of having the first wheel
chair handicapped commander
in the country quiet, easy go
ing Jim Almond. George I. Tall-
madge, another quiet, soft spok
en gentleman, is adjutant. And
Tommie Thompson, poet laur
eate of Camp White, is In charge
of publicity.
Other officers Include Arthur
Mcdinnus, senior vice-command
cr and secretary; Valentine
Flohs, junior vice-commander;
John Foley, chaplain; Carroll
D. Moody, sergeant at arms, and
Allen V. Brockemuchl, trustee.
Meetings are held the second
Tuesday of the month during the
summer and twice a month dur
ing the remainder of the year.
At present, a move is under way
to establish an auxiliary. While
patterned along the lines of oth
er service organizations, World
War I veterans are unique in
confining membership to those
who saw service in this armed
conflict. Service pension at the
age of 55 is the principal objec
tive in national legislation.
