HEALING HER WOUNDS The aircraft carrier Wasp lies In huge
drydock at Bayonne, N. J., as workmen, appearing like insects
on dock floor, hasten to prepare her for new fittings. The Wasp
collided with the destroyer-minesweeper Hobson while on maneu
vers In the Atlantic, receiving a 75 -foot gash in her bow and
sending 176 of the Hobson's crew to their deaths.

of all Big Pine district and Ash
land district Boy scout leaders
will be held Monday evening,

ters, den mothers, scoutmasters
and explorer advisors. It is im

Mothers' Day Breakfast Mem
bers of the Medford chapter of
the Order of DeMolay were to
hold their annual Mothers' day
breakfast at the Masonic Lodge
in Central Point this morning,
followed by Joint church ser
vices with mothers In Gold Hill.
Members of the chapter are
planning their annual peanut
brittle sale Thursday through
Saturday of this week, they said

Services for Dennis Lee Far
rell, Infant son of Mr. and Mrs
Richard L. Farrell, 506 North
Riverside avenue, who died Sat
urday morning, will be held In
Conger-Morris dhapcl Monday
at 1 p.m. with the Rev. C. W
Frost officiating. Committal will
be In the IOOF cemetery.
GOLDIE IRWIN ,
Goldie Alice Irwin died at a
local hospital Saturday. Perl
funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
EDWARD ARPAN
Edward B. Arpan, 73, a resi
dent of Medford and southern
Oregon for the past 20 years,
died at a local hospital Satur
day afternoon. Mr. Arpan was
born In South Dakota on Feb.
25, 1871), and was a farmer and
carpenter. His wife, Mrs. May
Arpan, died In 1046.
He was a member of Sacred
Heart church.
Survivors include three broth
ers, Louis and Chris Arpan.
Hoover, S. D.; and August Ar
pan of Minn.; and two sisters.
Mrs. Lena Sweeney and Mrs.
Emma Lavcll of Mont.
Mr. Arpan had resided at 206
Roy Street. Talent, for the past
several years.
Funeral services will be held
at Sacred Heart church Wednes
day morning at 9 o'clock, with
the Rev. Father C. J. Linehan
officiating. Interment will take
place in Siskiyou Memorial
park.
Rosary devotion will be held
at the Perl funeral home Tues
day at 7:30 p.m.
The public figure most Doru-
lar with cartoonists Is Jimmy
Durante, according to a vote of
the National Cartoonists Society.

Announces Timber
Sales for Month
The Medford office of the bur
eau of land management has an
nounced that the 23,800,000
board feet of timber to be offer
ed for sale at the district office
in the Medford city hall at 10
a m. Pacific Standard time. May
20, will include five parcels In
the Jackson marketing area with
a volume of 14,375,000 board
feet in the Josephine marketing
area.
The parcels In the Jackson
area include 1,785,000 board
feet of almost pure douglas fir
on Cedar Springs mountain;
2,295,000 board feet that is
largely pine and douglas fir In
the East Evans creek area;
1,740,000 board feet of douglas
fir and ponderosa pine on the
east fork of Evans creek, and
two parcels located In the Dead
Indian area, one of which con
tains 4,415,000 board feet of
ponderosa pine, white fir and
douglas fir and the other, 4,140,
000 board feet of mostly doug
las fir and white fir.
The timber offered In the
Josephine area will include the
re-advertisement of 3,560.000
board feet of mostly fire-killed
douglas fir and pine In the
Rattlesnake Creek burn west of
Glendale; 2,490,000 board feet,
composed largely ot douglas fir
in the Galice creek area; and
3,375,000 board feet, also large
ly composed of douglas fir, in
the West Fork Williams creek
area.
All of these parcels will be
sold at the district office In the
city hall, Medford, in accord
ance with recently approved
delegated authority. The sale
will begin at 10 a. m. standard
time, with the opening of all
sealed bids received; the oral
sales will begin immediately fol
lowing the opening of the sealed
bid sales.
