Teachers Plan
Illiteracy Study
Hartford, Conn. (U.R)
Nearly 2,000 American school
teachers will attend workshops
this summer in an attack upon
economic illiteracy.
They will bring back to their
classrooms in the fall subject
matter on the American econo
my, its strengths, weaknesses,
and present-day challenges. The
28 workshops, mostly on uni'
versity campuses, will be held
in 19 states and Hawaii. Aver
age length of a workshop
three weeks.
During that period teachers
hear lectures on economic sub
jecta by experts in their field
discuss problems with ,t h
speakers and then are assisted
by cirriculum experts in plan
ning a classroom presentation
that will be meaningful to their
pupils.
Hera are some of the subjects
considered by teachers at a typ
ical workshop: What are the
achievements and potentialities
of our economy?; how doea
free enterprize economy ' func
tion?; what are its energizing
and controlling forces?; what
economic problems does mobil
ization impose?; how can we
deal with current inflationary
pressures?; what are the prob
lems of agriculture?; what
our farm price support policy?
what are the problems of labor-
management relations?; what
are the problems of social secur
ity and social welfare?; what is
America's role In world trade?
At workshop sessions teachers
are in association with business
men and industrialists, labor
leaders, representatives of agri
culture, government and civic
organizations.

The old saying "a friend In need
a friend Indeed was never
more true than for 12-year-old
Janet Cooper, who had a flock
of friends in her time of need.
Thanks to her many school
buddies and neighbors Janet has
right arm today an arm re
placing the real one she lost last
August as a result of an accident
at a playground.
Perhaps the only other person
just as happy as Janet Is her
best friend, Bonnie Balach. Bon-
le made it possible for Janet
to have a new right arm when
she started a fund drive in their
neighborhood.

"When she was in the hosplt
," Bonnie said, "I suggested to
the neighborhood kids that we
should chip In and buy her a
gift.
When we started talking
about what to give her, we de
cided the thing she really need
ed was an arm. We knew It
would cost a lot of money, but
we decided to raise it"
Janet's young friends contri
buted their candy and movie
money and as the news spread,
adults came through with larg
er sums.
The "kitty" grew until a
trust fund had to be set up.
When the drive ended, the fund
totaled $1,089, enough to pay
for a new arm now and a larg
er one when Janet is grown.
"I'm so happy I can't even
talk," Janet said. "I can hold a
purse or anything."
With moveable fingers, like
the hand looks and even feels
like the real thing.
Bonnie refused to take credit
for making the arm possible.
"I m her friend," she said.

wedding band that she got when
