gineers have cleared 19, BOO, 000
acret of land used for bombing
nd gunnery ranges during
World War II and returned them
to civilian use.
The land had been declared
surplus but had to be made sate
by removing live shells before
it could be used.
The cleared acres are estimated
to be worth $700,000,000. The
total cost of the program which
began In 1947 is less than $3,
000,000. or about 20 cents an
ere. During the search for
unexploded missiles thousands
of tons of scrap metal were
found and salvaged for indus
trial uses.
