Bedford High Golfers Annex State
Championship

Medalist in
Tournament
The class of Oregon for the
second straight year, the Med
ford high school golf team won
the state championship in Fri
day and Saturday 36-hole action
at the Albany Golf club.
Paced by Phil Getchell, the
Tornado quartet had an aggre
gate of 608 strokes, nine better
than runner-up Grant of Port
land, which totalled 615. Other
top team scores were Albany
617, Corvallis 636, - Milwaukie
638 and Central Catholic 641.
Phil All-State
Getchell was medalist and No.
1 man on the all-state team with
a two-day card of 71-70141.
Seventy is par. He was seven
strokes under the No. 2 all-stater
Norquist of Lincoln who had
a 148. Also on the all-state team
were Zenger and McDonnelly
of Grant. They each had 140s.
Bill McAllister, Medford, was
one stroke behind the Grant pair
with 72-78 150. Other Medford
cores were Bob Shepherd 76
79155 and Justin Smith 79-81
160.

Albany golf course with a nine
stroke team edge over Grant in
Portland in Friday play.

at Klamath Falls on Saturday
but grabbed 10 spots for state
meet contention.
Grants Pass won the district
crown by piling up 166 points.
Medford scored 126'i, Klamath
Falls 62 79, Ashland 45 8'9,
Crater 19 and Illinois Valley 7.
Ed Bingham gained the state
mix at Corvallis next week-end
with firsts In the javelin and
high jump. His Javelin throw
was 178 feet 5V4, his best this
year In competition. He high
jumped 5 feet 8 inches.
D. Spinas In Three
Don Spinas qualified In both
high and low hurdles and the
javelin. He was second in the
highs and first in the lows and
trailed Blnghatn. for second in
the javelin. His time was :21.4
in, the lows. Jack Moad won the
shot put with a shove of 48 feet
5'4 inches. Don Jacobs took the
discus with a fling of 140 feet
1 inch.
Dave Newland figured in a
three way deadlock for first in
the pole vault with a 11 feet

both ends of a doubleheader

The Indians' double victory
makes a championship playoff

week against the Trojans who
split their series Saturday with
Santa Clara.
Joe Chez, Medford, Ore., ace
of the Stanford mound staff,
held the Bears to seven scattered
hits to take the victory in the
second contest.

3 advantage In the first three
innings then saw their margin
dwindle away in the closing

Each team had an eight-run
inning, Crater In the third and
Ashland In the sixth. Crater
scored six in the second.
Sixteen' walks given up "by
Ashland chuckers helped the
Comet cause along. Ashlanders
drew five walks.
The Comets have an import
ant JDJ league mix with Eagle
Point on Tuesday. Crater and
Myrtle Creek are running' neck
and neck now for the JDJ league
laurels. Both have been beaten
twice In league play. They have
one more iray yet with each

of a Pacific Coast league ball
game Saturday when Murray
Franklin singled in pinch run

made the fourth straight victory
for the Padres In the series.
The Padres' 10th inning run
gave them-a little firmer hold on
the league's top rung, and net
ted them their fifth series vic
tory of the season.
Relief hurler Al Benton
chalked up his fourth straight
win after taking over for Bob
Malloy in the 8th.
Lou Klein brought home the
first tally for San Diego in the
second frame when he took first
on an error, stole second and
raced home on a single by Allen
Richter.
The Solons tied the score in
the sixth, but dropped behind In
the second half of the frame
when a pair of doubles by Jack
Graham and Lou Klein gave the
Padres the edge.

Robinson is off to a fast start in
search of his second National
League batting title, but five
time champion Stan Muslal can't
seem to get rolling. "
Robinson, who won the Na
tional League crown in 1949, led
his Brooklyn Dodger mates back
from their first swing through
the West with a .429 average.
The slugging second baseman
had 20 hits in 47 trips to the
plate, including afternoon games
of Thursday, May 8.
Musial, meanwhile, was hav
ing trouble finding his batting
eye. The St. Louis Cardinals'
classy outfielder slipped to .289
during the past week with 22
hits in 76 at bats.
In the American league, out
fielder Sam Mele of the White
Sox led all rivals with a .370
average. Mele, who was traded
to the Chicago club last week
end by the Washington Sena
tors, boasted 17 hits in 46 plate
appearances.

Gene Woodling of the New
York 'Yankees was second at
:366, and Al Rosen of the Cleve
land Indians held third with a
.361 mark. Pete Runnels of the
Senators and Dale Mitchell of

vey Storey, for several seasons
Portland Beaver third baseman,
has returned to his home here
and announced he is quitting
baseball.
Storey, who played 12 seasons
of professional baseball and had
a lifetime batting average of
.309, was sold last week by the
San Diego Padres to Little Rock
of the Southern association. But
Storey returned home rather
than report to Little Rock. He
said he was giving up baseball
but had no immediate plans tor
the future.

Roseburg The Medford high
school baseball team pounded
out a 14 to 3 win over Rose
burg In a game played here Sat
urday afternoon. The two teams
meet again Monday at 2 p. m.
on the Medford diamond.
Heavy hitting paid off for the
victors as they banged out three
home runs. Members of the
Black Tornado nine who picked
up the four-baggers were Den
nil Conner, Dick Atterbury and
Terry Maddox. Maddox was the
hitting star of the contest as he
collected three hits and three
runs in four trips to the plate.
Darrell Wooton was the' win
ning pitcher for the Medford
team as he held the home team
to three scattered singles. Med
ford iced the contest in the fifth
inning when they poled out four
hits and took advantage of two
Roseburg errors to tally five
times. They added four more
runs In the sixth frame.
