Pettit Hurls
Hollywood
To Victory
San Francisco (U.R) Pitch
er Paul Pettit, a 20-year-old
southpaw with a double-barreled
bank account, led the Hollywood
Stars to a convincing victory
over San Francisco in Pacific
Coast league play Tuesday night.
The moneyed moundsman,
who scrawled his signature to
a Pittsburgh Pirate contract In
1940 for $100,000. took credit
for the Stars' 9 to 3 win, the
fourth of his publicized pitching
career.
It was Pettit's first take of
the season for the Stars. He
fanned two and walked six.
Scored Quickly
Los Angeles scored quickly
and then hung on to defeat Oak
land, 3-2; Sacramento won the
Iast-vs.-first battle from San
Diego, 7-2, and Portland's Don
Eggert caressed a grand-slam
home run to pace the Bevos to
an 8-2 triumph over Seattle.
Pettit's adversary was Bill
Reeder, a tall Texan who looked
like a pitching gem when he
worked a one-hit game on his
first assignment opening night.
Reeder looked something less
than precious last night, getting
relieved of duty in the second
Inning.
The Stars built up a five-run
lead In the first two frames on
doubles by Chuck Stevens and
Monty Bascall, singles, by Lou
Stringer, Carlos Berner, Mike
Sandlock and Tom Saffell, and
assorted other occurrences.
Hanner Helps
Los Angeles won the game in
the second inning, scoring twice
on Ed Lovigne's homer, Gene
Bakers' double and Jack Hollis'
single. Bill Moisan had Oakland
blanked until the ninth but,
thanks to help from Ralph Ham
ner, he got the win.
Johnny Ostrowski batted
home four runs to pace the Solon
win. Padre Jack Graham slapped
his fifth homer of the year, but
crafty Glenn Elliott had enough
stuff to keep Sacramento in
front.
Eggert's grand-slammer fea
tured a six-run Portland eighth
Inning. Whereas the Beavers ap
peared woefully weak against
Oakland pitching last week, they
stroked with authority against
three Seattle pitchers, collecting
15 hits.

Spokane Bids
For Top Spot
In League
By UNITED PRESS
The Spokane Indians, with
the help of the Vancouver Capi
lanos, are making a determined
bid to take over the top spot
in the Western Internation base
ball league standings.
The defending champions
edged Lewiston, 2-1, Tuesday
night while Vancouver whipped
Victoria, 7-4. This combination
brought Spokane into a virtual
tie with the Tyees, who have
been leading the tack since the
season began.
Salem. Wins
In other games, Salem blank
ed Vakima, 6-0, and Trl-Clty
took Wenatchee, 3-2.
Mel Wasley's towering home
run over the right field barrier
in the 10th inning gave Spokane
its victory over the Broncos.
Wasley also batted in the win
ders' other run with a single
in 'the third frame.
At Vancouver, the Caps ef
fectively bunched their 10 hits
to hand the Tyees their second
straight loss. Victoria's Granny
Gladstone collected a homer, a
dauble and a single but he
struck out with the bases load
ed in the ninth to end a closing
rally.
Poor Fielding Aids
Salem took advantage of poor
fielding and timely base hits to
defeat Yakima. Two of four Bear
errors were responsible for Sa
lem's first run. Yakima has
s i g p e d a right-hander Kenny
Wright, formerly with tne san
Francisco Seals, in an effort to
bolster the Bears' sagging
mound staff.
Tri-City scored three unearn
ed runs in the third inning and
then went on to defeat Wenat
chee. The Chiefs announced the
unconditional release of outfield
er Stan Budin and the signing
of southpaw Dave Dahle. who
was with Oakland of the racinc
Coast league.

Jim Rivera
Gets 'Rest'
Philadelphia (U.R) Rookie
outfielder Jim Rivera, the fleet
foot whose base hits spoke with
authority in the St. Louis
Browns' gaudy season start, was
back on the bench Wednesday
with an early-bright batting ave
rage ebbing in the tide.
In the parlance of baseball,
MarTager Rogers Hornsby said he
was giving Rivera "a needed
rest."
In the figures in the book, Ri
vera collected only two hits in
his last 33 times at bat, and his
batting average boiled down to
a mere .172. It was above .300
early in the season.
Hornsby admitted the bench
ing of the widely-publicized Pa
cific Coast star as the Browns
broke a five-game losing streak
at Shlbe Park Tuesday night.
But the Rajah said he definitely
was not giving up on the 29-year-old
rookie who sat out the
three games of the Washington
series.
"I still figure he's major league
caliber," Hornsby said. "All he
needs is a rest."
