HILL GAIL PULLS AHEAD Jockey Eddie Arcaro, aboard Calumet Farm's Hill Gail, looks
back a he crosses the finish line in the Kentucky Derby ahead of Sub Fleet. Sub Fleet put in a
strong challenge in the stretch. Blue Man finished third. Hill Gail's time was 2:01 35 for the
mile-and-a-quarter.
Fans Ponder Hill Gail's
Chances for Triple Crown
Louisville, Ky. (U.R) Hilllment about whether Sub Fleet
was actually gaining at the fin
ish. All hands concede that the
Dixiana ace picked up plenty of
ground coming down the stretch.
Rut many observers believe that
Sub Fleet was not gaining during
the last 100 yards that he, too,
had shot his bolt and had nothing
left.
Gail s gasping, all-out finish in
the Kentucky Derby left turf
fans wondering and arguing
about whether the latest "Calu
met Comet" can go on to win
racing's coveted "triple crown."
Next target for the brilliant
brown colt is the $75,000 Preak
ness Stakes at Fimlico on May
17, the so-called "second jewel"
of the crown. Then, on June 7,
at Belmont Park, comes the
$100,000 Belmont stakes.
That's a large order, and many
Kentucky hardboots here were
frankly skeptical of Hill Gail's
ability to sweep through.
World of Praise
There's a world of praise, of
course, for Hill Gail's Derby
triumph a sparkling race in
which the star from Calumet
Farm clocked 2:01-35 for
the mile and a quar.ter, only a
fifth of a second off the Derby
record set by Whirlaway. It left
little doubt that, at the distance,
Hill Gail was the class of the
field.
Most race men here were will
ing to concede that Hill Gail will
be a heavy choice in the Preak
ness, which is a slightly shorter
race at a mile and three-sixteenths.
But the Belmont, a mile and a
half race, is another matter.
The official chart of Satur
day's 78th running of the Derby
records that Hill Gail was "rid
den out" at the finish, and in the
lingo of the turf, that means he
didn't have anything left. He
had gone to the front after a
half-mile, and had turned for
home a whopping six lengths
ahead of the pack.
Uses All Energy
But in that last gruelling drive
down the stretch, second-place
Sub Fleet and others in the field
closed grimly. At the wire, Hill
Gail's margin was only two
lengths. Jockey Eddie Arcaro,
who won his fifth Derby aboard
Hill Gail, confirms his great
charger had used up all his
energy.
"You're not supposed to fin
ish the Derby with anything
left," argued the great rider.

Potato Shortage
Threatens Oregon
Retail Market j
Portland (U.R) A potato
shortage Tuesday threatened
Portland and other Oregon cities
depending on Portland whole
salers for their spud supplies.
Retailers reported old -crop
supplies simply ran out and new
crop spuds were not available in
sufficient volume to fill the
breach. An official of a large
wholesale organization estimated
half the stores in Portland were
out of potatoes.
Most dealers estimated it will
be about three weeks before sup
plies fully catch up with demand.
Shipments of new spuds from
California, which normally
would have taken over the mar
ket by now, have been a mere
trickle.
California growers are report
ed letting the spuds stay in the
ground for two reasons they
are pressing to boost ceiling
prices and the spuds are still
growing to add tonnage to the
crop. v
