American Product
Less Attractive
Than Import Tuna
Astoria U.R) After all the
fuss about fish imports, some 50
offshore tuna fishermen here
have learned that Japanese fish
ermen, their chief competitors,
are putting out a product super-
ior in color to the American i
catch. !
Fred Wolleson, Astoria tuna
fisherman who has led west coast j
activities to protect the Ameri
can fisherman from Japanese im
ports, brought the fishermen to
gether at the Union Fishermens" i
Cooperative packing company to
compare their canned product
with the Japanese imported
canned goods.
Tuna Look Better
Wolleson said they found the
Japanese tuna is lighter, looks
better in the can, is more coarse
in texture but tastes about the
same.
Both packers and fishermen
agreed that the color difference
was mainly because American
tuna catches no longer "bleed"
their fish when first caught as
the Japanese do.
Wolleson said he thought the
American albacore was superior
in taste and texture but that it
did not look as good in the can,
showing up considerably darker
than the Japanese product.
He warned the fishermen that
the average housewife buys by
"eye appeal" and that Ameri
can fishermen would have to
start bleeding their fish to keep
up with the imports.
