Methodist Meeting
To Extend Closure

dist delegates to their church's
quadrennial general conference
virtually buried by an ava
lanche of some 1,600 reports
may be forced to extend their
meeting beyond the scheduled
Wednesday closing date, offic
ials said Monday.
Committees studied many of
the resolutions, submitted by
various church groups, during
the weekend. Some were sched
uled in first order of business
Monday when delegates renew
debate on proposals to stream
line Methodist organizations.
Other recommendations will
be considered Tuesday and
Wednesday by the 720 lawmak
ers for 10,000,000 Methodists.
Some leaders said the session
might be extended to give time
for full discussion of the reports.
Slill to be acted upon are
questions involving smoking and
drinking restrictions upon min
isters and disposition of the
Methodist federation for social
action, a non-official affiliate
which has been accused of "left
ists" tendencies.

Low bid on the project, for
$1,048,738.50, was submitted yes
terday by A. Teichert and Sons,
Sacramento.
All but three-quarters of a mile
of the new section will be four
lane divided highway. The small
er section will be two-lane free
way, with eight-foot shoulders.
Engineers said the project will
be completed late in 1953.
Location of the new highway
generally follows the line of the
present route, although all sharp
curves and grades will be re
duced or eliminated.
Present traffic counts on the
highway already exceed 5,000
cars per day, and engineer., nave
predicted a figure of 13,000 by
i7u. The blind curves and
grades have given the stretch of
road an accident rate well above
the state average.

Swedish actress Ulla Jakobsson
was shocked and tearful Satur
day because Frenchmen don't
like her in the nude.
"Why are Frenchmen so sur
prised," she asked in bewilder
ment after the furore raised by
the showing of her first movie,
"One Summer of Happiness" In
which she appears unclothed.
Not Thought Extraordinary
The 19-year-old actress said
she was dumbfounded . by the
whole thing. She plays one en
tire sequence in the nude in
the arms of an equally uninhib
ited lover and said "nobody
thought the scene was extraor
dinary" when the film appeared
in Stockholm.
Ulla, a natural blonde who
wears practically no makeup,
has become the undisputed
queen of the 1952 film festival
since the picture was shown.
But she is hurt by criticism.
. She broke down and wept
when the storm broke.
She Was Embarrassed
"Oh, I was so embarrassed by
all the attention they gave me,"
she said.
Ulla said she had read in a
French newspaper that Swedish
youths and girls bathe together
in the raw all the time.
"That's not true. In the bath
houses there are different sides
for men and women," she said.
"But ... if it should happen
that a group of young folk find
themselves by a deserted lake or
seashore on a hot summer's day,
that might be a different mat
ter. And no one would . be
shocked.
"Isn't It the same other
places?"

for failing to ride her horse into
the city on an anti-Communist
mission to the Voice of Amer
ica. Mrs. Pauline Buffalari, who
brought 13 letters to be read
over the VOA to Josef Stalin,
said she completed the last 11
miles of her 230-mile, 16-day
ride from Norfolk, Va., in an
automobile because "Sunday
traffic got too bad for trotting.
"Bing," her pinto pony, rode
the last leg of the trip in a van.

old drug packer, charged with
attempted rape, was wearing a
bandana head scarf and seven
skirls when police arrested him
Sunday. i
Harold Shechy said he found
that by shedding a skirt it was
easy for him to avoid identifica
tion after an attack. He was
also charged with masquerading
in women s clothing, a misde
meanor.
