for state tourney opposition.

won his match from Jim Cole
man also 3 to 0. Bill McAllister
and Conrad Mann also won
matches for Medford and Justin
Smith divided with his rival,

Jerry Clausen was low man
for Corvallis Friday, firing an
80 while losing to McAllister,
who stroked a 76.

Seattle, Wash. (U.R) The
Washington Huskies swept six
events, the last five in a row,
to bury Oregon State 98-33 in
a Northern Division Pacific
Coast conference dual track
meet here Saturday.
The Washington sweeps were
in the high jump, 880 yard run,
broad jump, 220 low hurdles,
discus, and mile relay. Oregon
State, featuring Merv Brock In
the sprints, took first places In
the 100 and 220 yard dashes, the
shot put and pole vault. Brock
was the meet's high scorer with
10 points, gained with victories
in the 100 and 220 yard dashes.
George Widenfelt was high scor
er for Washington with ' eight
points.
Biggest surprise of the meet
was Charles Tulin's victory over
Oregon State's Ralph Sutton In
the javelin. Sutton last week had
thrown the spear more than 200
feet against Idaho. Saturday's
distance was 185 feet 7'2 inches
The victory gave Washington
a 25-2 mark over the Beavers
in the dual track meet history
between the two schools.

eye, closed another cage season
by sparking the Minneaoolis
Lakers to their fourth National
Basketball Association cham
pionship in five years.
Mikan scored 22 points and
kept iron control of the back
boards Friday night as the
Lakers trounced the New York
Knickerbockers, 82 to 65, in the
finale of the NBA playoff.
Early Lead
The Lakers never trailed after
they swung into 4 to 3 lead early
in the game. The New York
squad has never won on the
Lakers' home court.
Minneapolis led 18-12 at the
first quarter, 36-29 at the half
and 4S-37 at the end of the third
quarter.
Gus Bell Homers
For Twinks' Win
Hollywood (U.R) Newcomer
Russell (Gus) Bell saved the day
for the Hollywood Stars Satur
day by smashing out a two-run
homer in the third game to give
the Twinks a 2 to 1 Pacific Coast
league win over the San Diego
Padres.
Making his first appearance
with the Slurs since his transfer
from the Pittsburgh Pirates, the
23-year-old Bell blasted his hom
er over the right-field wall to
give the Stars their only two tal
lies of the contest.
The four-base hit came with
two away, and drove in Chuck
Stevens who had gotten base
with a single.
The Padres' lone run also came
with a homer as Dick Faber con
nected for a 365-foot drive that
cleared the right field wall in
the top of the fourth. Faber was
lead-off man in the inning.

Dodgers Reveal
Offer Rejection
Brooklyn (U.R) Brooklyn
owner Walter O'Mallcy has re
vealed he already has turned
down a three-quarter million
dollar offer for Duke Snider and
Gil Hodges.
"It was quite a decision to
make," said the Dodger boss,
"but I rejected the offer and I'm
glad."
Disclosing the details of the
proposed transactions, O Malley
said, "A club has offered us
$600,000 plus five players for
Snider and Hodges. 1 don't wish
to name the club, but I will ad
mit it was quite a sum to say
'no' to."
The offer, O'Mallcy said, was
made early in 1951, shortly aft
er he succeeded Branch Ricke
as President o the Dodgers.
Cheney Studs
Raiders at Ashland Today
Medford's Cheney Studs will
oppose the Southern Oregon col
lege baseball nine at Ashland et
2 p.m. today.
It will be the first practice
contest of the 1952 season for
the Cheney club which has
worked on its home field, the
fairgrounds ball park, on the
past two Sundays.
Coach Ted Schopf's Ashland
Red Raiders will have the ad
vantage of better conditioning
and of a good number of games
under their belts.
Skipper Pleased
Stud Manager Paul (Hoosier)
Hoffard, however, has indicated
he is pleased with his personnel
and that the Studs should do
well this season. He says the
Cheney gang Is his kind of team
with plenty of batting power
and well-balanced fielding.
The Studs will vie in the
semi -pro Southwestern Oregon
league.
Among the members of the
squad for the first practice fray
are Frank Roelandt, Medford
high hoop coach; Clyde (Moose)
Blevins; Clarence Mellbye, Cra
ter high diamond coach, and
Alex McDonald, Medford high
baseball coach.
Roelandt, a catcher, "played
for Boise of the Pioneer league
last summer and Mellbye, pitch
er and infielder, has played in
the Pioneer circuit. Blevins, an
outfielder, was with Klamath
Falls in the Far West league last
season and finished up the year
with Salt Lake City of the Pio
neer league. McDonald, an in
fielder, formerly played in the
Western International league.

semi-pro Medford Craters;
Snuffy Smith, outfielder, now
an. Ashland Junior high coach
and former player in the North

and Bob Nelson, pitcher.
As soon as schools have closed
the Studs roster, will be enlarged
with several college and high
school stars, to be announced
later.
On Wednesday night, May 7,
the Studs open their home sched
ule with SOC in a return game
at the fairgrounds. League play
in the Southwestern Oregon
Baseball league opens In Med
ford with the Studs meeting the
Drain Indians in a two game
series starting Saturday night,
