For Campus Event
Miss Patsy Older, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Older, 38
North Berkeley way, has been
elected a princess for the annual
May week-end to be held May
1 to 4 at Willamette university.
The queen is Miss Betty Jean
Mullin, senior from Portland,
and the second princess is Miss
Carolann S n a r r, San Bruno,
Calif.
Miss Older, a major in home
economics, has been cast as fem
inine lead in three university
drama productions and is an ac
tive member of Willamette Uni
versity Players. She has also
been on the yell squad for two
semesters and was president of
Delta Gamma, social fraternity
lor women, last year.

Miss Dorothy Marie Anderson,
daughter of the Rev. and Mrs.
Henry W. Anderson, 1612 East
Jackson street, Medford, was
one of the cast of "The Old Maid
and the Thief," operetta pro
duced by the University thea
ter, University of Oregon, last
week. The production closed Sat
urday night.
Miss Anderson, a junior in the
school of music, played the part
of a spinster companion.

To Be Observed

Charles Taylor Pipes of Phoe
nix will observe their 50th wed
ding anniversary by holding
open house at their Phoenix
home Sunday, May 4. Friends
are invited to call between the
hours of 1:30 and five o'clock.
Mr. and Mrs. Pipes were mar
ried in La Verne, Calif., May 4,
1902. They moved to Sams Val
ley in 1905 and have lived in
Jackson county ever since. The
Pipes resided for a few years on
the Old Stage road near Central
Point and moved to the present
home in Phoenix in 1925.
'' Their foster daughter, Mrs.
Lewis' Todd, the former Doris
Holmes, lives in Tacoma, Wash.
Mrs. Todd and her husband, Dr.
Todd, and their five children
will be here Sunday for the gold
en wedding anniversary.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Pipes will
be 79 years old in September.
Mrs. Pipes was born in Bloom
field, la., and is the former
Julia Ann DeMar. Mr. Pipes was
born in Lancaster, Mo.

by the Medford Sojourners club
during their Thursday meeting
at the Medford hotel. Spring
flowers and the sale articles
were used as decorations about
the room.
Mrs. E. F. Cronin was elected
president, replacing Mrs. Charles
Ninemires, who resigned. Mrs.
B. F. Coleman was elected first
vice-president. A camellia cor
sage was presented to Mrs. Cro
nin. Mrs. W. H. Sturgeon and Mrs.
Mildred Joseph became new
members. Special prizes were
awarded to Mrs. Faith Graves
and Mrs. Joe Materie. Bridge
prizes went to Mrs. Ted Quinn,
Mrs. T. D. Kelg and Mrs. Frank
Sawacki.
Pinochle prizes went to Mrs.
C. G. Whitney and Mrs. Richard
Mayes. Mrs. J. E. Westlund and
Mrs. Frank English were canas
ta winners.
Mrs. Sawacki, Mrs. Robert A.
Brown and Mrs. S. G. Parker
were hostesses. The next regular
meeting will be May 8.

Much interest is being shown
in the annual Mother-Daughter
banquet to be held in the dining
hall of the First Methodist church
May 5 beginning at 6:30 o'clock,
those in charge state.
An interesting feature on the
program will be "living pictures"
which will present the life of a
daughter from babyhood to the
young bride. Young women of
the church will model for these
pictures and the album of pic
tures will open with the small
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rich
ard Jewett posing for the baby
hood model. In charge of pro
gram arrangements are Mrs.
John Carter, Mrs. J. C. Sparks
and Mrs. H. D. Beatty.
The decorating committee,
headed by Mrs. Richard Fanger,
is composed of Mrs. A. C. Pierce,
Mrs. George Watson, Mrs. Har
ry Myers and Mrs. Phil Stem
bridge. Tickets for both mothers and
daughters are available through
chairmen of the several circles.
Entertainment for small daugh
ters will be presented in another
part of the church after the ban
quet, it is announced by the gen
eral committee.

Medford hotel. The .convention
opened Friday and closed to
day. A party was given at the hotel
Friday night for early arrivals,

National Convention
Of Voters' League
Mrs. Donovan Foster left Sat
urday by United Airlines for
Cincinnati, O., to attend the
annual national convention of
Legue of Women Voters. The
convention opens Monday, April
28, and the local delegate will
join with members from nearly
800 leagues in 47 states, Alaska,
Hawaii and the District of Co
lumbia in adopting a national
plan of work for the next two
years, adopting a budget and
electing national officers.

slate presented by the nominat
ing committee. Other nominees

of Harvard university will ad
dress a dinner meeting on
Wednesday, April 30. His subject
is "Our Economy in Its Interna
tional Setting." Thursday after
noon a distinguished panel of ex
perts will discuss the question

Of Oregon Job's Daughters
Miss Carolyn Coleman, past
queen of Medford bethel, Jobis
Daughters, was chosen hanorary
state queen for Oregon during
the 28th annual session of the
Mist Carolyn Coleman
grand guardian council held last
week-end in Roseburg. She will
serve for the ensuing year.
For the first time the bethel
was represented by a drill team
in the competitive drills and the
team gained further honor for
the Medford bethel by placing
second in its classification.
Members of the team were
housed at the Shady Oaks motel
near Roseburg, and Friday night
were surprised with a midnight
bonfire and wiener roast given
by the proprietors of the motel,
Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Thornton.
Twenty - eight members of
Medford bethel attended the
sessions.
Sorority Chapter
Holds Initiation;
Install Officers
New members of Alpha Rho
chapter of Beta Sigma Phi were
initiated at a ceremony held
Thursday evening in the Girls
Community club.
The new members are Mrs.
Corliss Shouts, Mrs. Harold Ar
thur, and Mrs. Roy Petre.
A candlelight ceremony pre
ceded the initiation and was
conducted by the president, Mrs.
Edward Bunnell, and Mrs. W.
H. Fisher.
The ritual of jewels was pre
sented for Mrs. Richard Mundy,
Mrs. Ray Dallaire, Mrs. Russell
Budreau and Mrs. M a y n a r d
Paup.
The officers for the coming
year were also installed. Mrs.
Treavell T u r p i n is president;
Mrs. Fisher, vice-president; Mrs.
Harvey Bell, extension officer;
Mrs., Paup, secretary, and Mrs.
Ray Clark, treasurer.
An informal social period fol
lowed and refreshments were
served. Mrs. Turpin poured. The
table was decorated with yellow
roses and tapers.
A guest for the evening was
Mrs. Dennis Carter, a recent
transfer from Corvallis.
Plans now are being' made for
the Founders' day banquet which
will be held in the Ashland Elks
club May 2. All chapters of
Grants Pass, Medford and Ash

Roseburg where they attended
the three-day grand session of
the grand guardian council of
Job's Daughters for Oregon.
Saturday afternoon the Cen
tral Point bethel won third place
in Class B novelty drills. First
and second places were taken
by Portland bethels.
Miss Melva Chew was chosen
honorary state librarian for the
coming year, and Saturday eve
ning acted as escort for the
grand librarian at the installa
tion ceremonies. Miss Chew' at
tends high school at Phoenix,
and is treasurer of the Central
Point bethel.
The memorial service Friday
morning, in which Central Point,
Ashland and Medford bethel
members participated, was given
special praise. The services will
be given later in Ashland for
Order of Eastern Star.

Mrs. O. A. Eden with her
daughter-in-law, Mrs. Douglas
Eden and small daughter, Eliza
beth Anne, will leave today for
Houston, Tex. Mrs. Douglas Eden
and her husband, Captain Eden
of the United States Air Force,
are currently stationed at Houston.
Mrs. Eden has been spending
the past several weeks with
relatives in Oregon City and
with her husband's parents here.
