30 Boys Enter Soap
Box Derby on Friday
About 30 boy entered the
1952 Rogue Valley Soap Box
Derby at a meeting Friday night
at the Barnes Chevrolet com
pany, one of the sponsoring or
ganizations. The derby, to be held here
July 13, is being conducted un
der the Joint auspices of Barnes,
The Mail Tribune and the Inter
national Footprint association,
and is open to all Rogue valley
boys 11 to 15 years of age.
The boys attending the meet
ing, accompanied by their fath
ers, were Issued wheels and
axles for their derby racers. A
cut-out model of a racer has
ben designed and assembled by
Johnnie Pojedinae, service man
ager at Barnes, and will be com
pleted day by day, as the boys
complete theirs.
Plan Service Shop
A service and problem shop
has ben opened to aid boys in
building their racers.
Boys entering last night were
fiom Medford, Grants Pass, Ash
land, Eagle Point, Central Point
and other valley communities.
Boys entering may pick their
own sponsor, but if they have
none, the committee in charge
will endeavor to find a sponsor,
a business organization or busi
ness. A few more sponsors are
needed, according to C. Lyall
Fidler, general chairman for the
derby. Sponsors are asked to
buy the wheels and axles and
follow up with assisting the boy
in his actual building and other
problems.
Many Priiet
More than 100 prizes will be
awarded in the local derby, with
the grand prize being the T. H.
Keating city championship
plaque, a 17-Jewel wristwatch
and a trip to "Derby Downs' In
Akron, O., where the All-American
Soap Box Derby finals will
be run August 10.
Some 20 members of Chapter
16 of the Footprinters group
were present at the Friday meet
ing to aid In Issuing applica
tions, drivers licenses and
wheels.
Committeemen stressed that
boys must do the actual racer
construction work themselves,
although they may have advice,

For Camp White Men
Camp White A musical pro
gram was presented at the Camp
White Domiciliary on April 23
sponsored by The Enchanted
Grotto, according to Mrs. Paul
Olsen, route one, box 225, Eagle
Point.
The program was arranged by
Fred J. Divisek, who was also
heard playing the vibraharp. ac
companied at the piano by Mar
lyn Barker.
A full house Joined the 30
members of the combined Med
ford and Grants Pass accordion
bands In the singing of "Home
on the Range." A novelty num
ber was the playing of accordion
elections on an instrument in
use 50 years ago, which had
only 10 keys, by James Rich
mond of Grants Pass.
Mrs. Norman A. Dunford,
Eagle Point, sang a number ac
companied by Divisek at the
piano. Member Tommy Thomp
son's poem was read while prep
arations were being marie for
Dr. Olson's fluorescent display.
He used long wave ultra-violet
light, and demonstrated fluor
escent sands which he manufactures.

weeks, and committeemen plan
tours to the homes of contest
ants to . check their progress
from time to time, and to check
on the safety of all cars.
Swiss Methodist
Will Speak Here
Theophll Oppliger, lay leader
of the Switzerland annual con
ference of the Methodist church,
will speak Sunday at the 11 a.m.
service of First Methodist church
here.
Oppliger Is a delegate to the
Methodist general conference at
San Francisco. A resident of
Zurich, he served as a district
lay leader from 1041 until be
coming conference leader In
1948.
Oppliger has been employed
as a bank official since 1923 for
Credit Swisse, largest Swiss
bank. His other activities in
clude those of treasurer of the
Swiss Evangelistlcal party and
member of the local commission
for supervision of grammar and
high schools.
He Is a sergeant In the Swiss
army, a patrol leader and In
structor in the signal corps. Dur
ing World War II he served 500
days in Swiss border protection.
New Water District
Commissioners Elect
The organizational meeting of
the newly-elected board of com
missioners of the Maple Park
Water district, which was formed
at a recent election in the dis
trict west and northwest of Med
ford, was held Friday night.
Carol W. Corcoran was elect
ed chairman, Harry S. Walker
was named secretary, and B. T.
Green was elected treasurer.
Members discussed arrange
ments for a bond election which
will be called soon to raise funds
for construction of a pipeline to
bring Medford water to resi
dents of the area. They also dis
cussed tentative plans for the
pipeline.
Members of the board cast lots
for the length of their terms
which were Hugh O. Hile. one
year; Green, two; Ray M. Gresh
am, three; Corcoran, four; and
Walker, five. All took their
oaths of office Friday night.

Air Reservists Get
Induction Caution
Hamilton, Calif. Air Force
reservists who have been tenta
tively selected for active duty
should not quit their jobs or close
out their personal affairs until
they actually receive orders di
recting them to report, Fourth
Air Force heaquarters officials
have cautioned. '
The headquarters alio an
nounced that flying training has
been opened to members of the
Air National Guard and Air
Force reserve who are high
school graduates and are not on
active duty.
Must Enlist
Air Force Reservists applying
for training will be required to
enlist in the regular United
States Air Force for two years,
and upon completion of flying
training they must serve three
years active duty. If flying in
structions are not completed by
the Reservists they must serve
the remainder of their two year
enlistment. Reservists may sub
mit applications for flying train
ing to their unit commanders.
Upon completion of flying
training, members of the Air
National Guard will be assigned
to their home Air National Guard
unit as pilots. Air National
Guard enlistment mu.it be served
out in the event the flying in
structions are not completed. Ap
plications will be submitted
through the Air National Guard
squadron commanders.
Flying Training applicants
must be single, between the ages
of 19 and 26Vs years of age and
physically qualified.
New Union Creek
Ranger Appointed
Charles M. Darling, a district
ranger on the Chelan National
forest since 1946, is being trans
ferred to the Rogue River Na
tional forest, in charge of the
ranger district at Union Creek,
It was announced Saturday by
Forest Supervisor J. H. Wood.
Darling will replace Harold C.
Chriswell, who has been pro
moted to a position on the staff
of the Mt. Hood forest at Port
land. Darling has been living at
Winthrop, Wash., and is expect
ed to arrive in the Rogue valley
Monday. He is married and has
one child.
Man Slightly Injured
When Hit by Big Truck
La Grande (U.R) A 33-year-old
La Grande man was
recovering in a hospital here
Saturday from Injuries suffered
when a dual-wheel gravel truck
ran over-him.
Physicians who examined
Kenneth Hughes said he suffered
no broken bones as a result of
the accident Friday and they
classed it as a miracle.
The truck left the imprints of
its tires in Hughes from his feet
to his neck. The weight of the
truck broke hundreds of small
blood vessels, but the victim was
not in severe pain, doctors re
ported.
Is) Service Today
At New Prospect
Episcopal Mission
The first religious service at
the tecentlytorganized Episcopal
mission at Prospect will be held
at 8 p.m. today In the Prospect
Community hall, It was an
nounced Saturday.
Opening of the mission, under
the sponsorship of St. Mark's
Episcopal church in Medford, is
the first step in the development
of a missionary field which will
cover the entire Upper Rogue
area between Union Creek, Butte
Falls and Shady Cove.
Resident Clergyman
Church spokesmen said It Is
hoped to place a resident clergy
man in the field soon, and In the
meantime services will be con
ducted by clergymen and lay
readers from Medford and Ash
land. The congregation at Prospect
has elected members of a church
committee, including Robert
Henthorne, church warden, J. H.
Grieve, secretary, Lu Rogers,
treasurer, and Don Vaughn, Mrs.
Al Selby, Mrs. Jeff Richey and
Mrs. Don Vaughn.
A second congregation Is now
being organized in the Elk-Trail-Shady
Cove area, and services
are expected to start in the near
future. Sunday schools are being
organized in both sections.
Members to Attend
The Rev. George R. V. Bol
ster, rector of St. Mark's, who
has been responsible for organ
ization of the new mission, will
be In charge of tonight's service,
assisted by the Girls' choir of
St. Mark's. Many members of
the Medford congregation are
expected to attend the inaugural
service.
Mr. Bolster emphasized that
while the traditional Episcopal
form of service will be followed,
the new mission will be for the
benefit of the entire community
without exception, and all resi
dents of the area who do not have
other church affiliations will be
welcomed.
