Today the fragments of Tisho
mingo go to make up three coun
ties Tishomingo, Alcorn and
Prentiss. The only reminder of
Jacinto's former greatness is the
decaying old red-brick two-story
courthouse, which is now used by
the congregation of the Metho
dist church.
Jacinto was recognized as the
most prosperous and fastest
growing city of northeast Mis
sissippi in the 1840s and '50s
and its only recognized rival in
the area was the bustling port of
Eastport, Tcnn., on the Tennes
see. river.
Jacinto originally was known
as Cincinnati after another com
munity on the banks of the Ohio,
the residents decided two "great"
cities with the same name would
prove confusing. Along about
that time the Texas fight for in
dependence had ensnared the
public fancy, so when the battle
of San Jacinto was fought and
won by the pioneers, the Missis
sippi, town's name was changed.
In time, residents in the coun
ty's outer perimeter began to
complain that slow travel made
it a day's journey to Jacinto in
the geographic center of the
county. The "state" was split Into
three counties
Today the once prosperous
community of Jacinto contains
fewer than 100 persons and its
former rival, Eastport, is not
even on the map. The communi
ty is almost inaccessible in bad
weather. Two small general
stores make up the bulk of the
business district
Nevertheless, Jacintoans still
are proud of their community

are expected to save the carriers
millions of dollars a year.
The new foam material was
developed by Elastomer Chemi
cal Corp, Nutley, N. J., together
with research teams of the
Bakelite Co.
The new substance resembles
foam rubber but It has several
advantages, according to the en
gineers. The material, made
from vinylite plasticol, is more
flame resistant, has a high resil
ience and elasticity, Is resistant
to oxidizing or hardening and is
virtually odorless.
It can be covered by textile or
film. It Is lightweight and avail
able in any color or thickness.
The material Is made in a sim
ple three-step process. It Is ex
pected to compare In cost with
foam rubber.
Another substance with a
vinylite base is in solution form.
It was developed by Surface En
gineering Co., Wichita, Kan., can
be applied by spray on the walls
of buildings. Cracks up to two
Inches wide can be bridged. The
resulting protective coat, like a
cover of heavy paint, Is resistant
to fire, the weather and deteri
oration. One gallon of the sub
stance will cover 100 square feet
of wall.
Railroads are constantly being
forced to change the wooden tie
pads that serve to hold the rails
to the tie. However, a new plas
tic material is now being made
into tie pads. They are flexible
and absorb the stock and de
structive abrasion caused by
heavy engines and cars moving
over the rails.
Engineers at the national plas
tic exposition estimated that
railroads can save more than
$450 a mile annually in track
maintenance costs by using the
new-type plastic tie pads.
The pads already have been
tested for some years. They are
made of abaca fiber compound
with a vinylite resins. The tests
show that the new tie pads were
undamaged after many months
of us. The conventional tie pads
suffered severe damage.

Freedom Can Slip
Away, Legislator
Tells Rotarians
A sober warning that freedom
can slip away from the people o.
America, unless the widely pre
vailing negligence, carelessness
and indifference of citizens are
replaced with a sense of respon
sivility at election time, was
voiced in an address here Tues
day by State Senator Howard
Belton. The veteran legislator
from Canby spoke at the Tues
day luncheon meeting of the
Medford Rotary club at the
Jackson hotel.
In discussing "You and Your
Government," Senator Belton
said that it is time to be more
critical of government, with one
dollar of every three earned by
the taxpayer going to the cost of
government. There are two phil
osophies, one that government is
the servant of the people, the
other that the people are the
slaves of government, he pointed
out. We have ignored the teach
ing of history, the speaker warn
ed, and the existing feeling of
hopelessness should be replaced
with active interest in govern
ment and greater exercise of
voting franchise.
Security Seen Object
Recently, security has seemed
to become the prime objective
of government, Senator Belton
told Rotarians; the deep freezes
and mink coats- should cease to
be the targets of jokes, they are
instead an Indication of real
tragedy. We have a real respon
sibility to 40 million youths and
to a half-million young men now
fighting In the hills of Korea,
he said, and it Is high time to
understand that freedom can
exist only In a moral atmos
phere; that Christianity does
have a place In politics. Ameri
cans can do something about the
present deplorable situation if
they will exercise the right of
the ballot, he concluded.
Senator Belton was Introduced
by Rotary program chairman
John Niedermeyer.
