For Saigh on
Tax Charge

Jr., president o the St. Louis
Cardinals, was to surrender on a
five-count indictment for evasion
', of income taxes and post $2,000
bond Thursday at the U. S. mar
shnl's office.
The 47-yearold Saigh placed
his baseball future in the hands
' of baseball Commissioner Ford
Frick and Warren Giles, presi
dent of the National league.
Frick To Decide
Saigh predicted he would be
cleared of the charge but said
that he will be "guided com
pletely by the recommendation
of Frick and Giles as to whether
I should now continue In base-
ball."
Saigh was Indicted by a fed
eral grand jury Tuesday on five
counts of tax evasion, totaling
549,260 for the period 1946
through 1949. If convicted, he
could face a maximum sentence
of five years on each count.

Medford Thinclads
Overwhelm Ashland
The Medford high school track
team romped over Ashland
101 to 24'4 here Wednesday,
placing first in 11 of the thirteen
events and making clean sweeps
in four contests.
The lopsided victory was ex
pected. Medford was in front all the
way. The sweeps of all three
places were in the high hurdles,
the shot put, the 220-yard dash
and the javelin.
Don Spinas in the high hur
dles and quarter-mile, Bill Red
den in the 100 and 220-yard
dashes and Ed Bingham in the
high jump and javelin were Tor
nado double winners.
Winton Miller in the discus
and Bonds in the broad jump
were the only Ashland event
winners.
There were a number of good
Medford performances although
the victory was an easy one.
Jack Moad put the shot 49 feet
IV2 Indies, not far off the dis
trict mark of 49 feet 5 inches.
Ed Bingham posted his best jave
line heave in competition this
year, 166 feet HVj inches. Dave
Newland won the pole vault at
11 feet then cleared the bar at
12 feet in practice.
Three Medford sprinters. Bill
Redden, Duane Goodman and
Frank Baize, ran the 220-yard
dash in under 23 seconds. Red
den was the winner in 22.6 sec
onds. In an exhibition 440-yard
relay, the quartet of Goodman,
Don Spinas, Baize and Redden,
covered the ground in 45 sec
onds event, better than Hayward
relays time last Saturday. They
ran against two other Medford
teams.

San Francisco (U.R) A lot of
people saw a lot of baseball
Thursday. But they weren't
propped on the wooden seats
at Hollywood stadium. They
were curled up on comfortable
sofas at home watching San
Diego defeat Hollywood, 5-3, in
an 18-lnning distance chase
across their video screens.
Only 2,302 paid their way into
the ball park.

Another extra inning game,
mild by comparison, found Seat
tle nipping Oakland, 8-7, on
George Vico's fly ball in the 11th.
In normal exhibitions, San Fran
cisco defeated Sacramento, and
Portland bombarded Los An
geles, 10-5.
San Diego's Johnny Davis,
only reasonably telegenic but
quite proficient as a ball player,
doubled home two runs in the
top of the 18th to help the Pads
lengthen their Pacific Coast
league lead to a game and a half.
HEART ATTACK
Seattle (U.R) Earl Shelly,
general manager of the Seattle
Rainiers baseball team, was re
ported to be in good condition
Thursday after he was taken to
Maynard hospital following a
heart attack Wednesday.

Dick Shea, meet record-holder
in the two-mile run, and five
other track stars will defend in
dividual championships when the
annual, two-day Penn Relays un
fold for the 58th time Friday.
Shea, a 1950 winner who re
tained his crown last year with
a precedent - shattering 9:11.9
clocking, and teammate Larry
Johnson, the 120 high hurdles
king, are favored.
Other Defenders
Other defenders in the 90-event
program, which features 4,117
athletes, are Bob Allison of Navy,
javelin; Herb Neff of Tennessee,
high jump; Cummin Clancey of
Villanova, discus, and Ed Ross of

Michigan's Roland Nilsson,
