news goes on constantly In all
countries, including our own.

"We can only guess about
many phases of life under the
Communist dictatorships, but
doubt that any genuinely big
news breaks in those countries
that does not soon leak across
their borders. Border leaks are
not a satisfactory way of cover
lng news, but the veil can be
penetrated and frequently

tices, and often their silence
, speaks louder than words."
' Johnson said he did not mini-
mize the difficulties of covering
news abroad, but he thought it
a mistake to magnify them to the
point of public hand-wringing
He urged that the press not give
an impression of helpless sur
render, but instead should em
phasize what it has done and Is
continuing to do to get the news
regardless of difficulties.

Lloyd Smith is building a new
house north of the high school
for Mr. and Mrs. Vern Bayless,
Mr. and Mrs. William Adams
of White Water, Wis., are visit
ing Mrs. Adam's brothers, Glen
and Harold Nourse and their
families here. This is the Adams'

The Women's Association of
Hope Presbyterian church will
hold a cooked food sale, April
26, in the building adjoining the
Homestead cafe.
The Volunteer firemen were
called twice recently for brush
fires. Friday's fire was in Shef-
flin gulch and on Sunday the
fire was at Rogue River Junc
tion.
Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Yarmol
returned last Wednesday from
.Kicnmona, Calif., where they
spent Easter with their son and
daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs
Eugene Yarmol. They report
having had a very pleasant trip
and gooa fishing.
Mrs. Edawar Dare., arrived
here Weriniday from Seattle, to
Join her husband. They are visit
ing the Ward Garretts.
Chuck Wheat's orchestra
which is now playing at the
Saturday night dances at the
V.F.W. clubrooms, has been en
gaged to play for the firemen's
dances at the city park during
tne coming summer. The V.F.W
dances are being well patronized
and it has been announced the
dances will continue into June.
The last V.F.W. dance will be
given June 14. and the firemen's
ball is scheduled for June 21.
Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Parr re-
turned last Friday after a four
months stay in Oklahoma, due to
illness.
The Rev. and Mrs. D. F. Barn
ett were called to Los Angeles
last Thursday by the illness of
his sister.
Marcia Thayer, editor of the
Times, reports there has been
considerable interest taken in
the paintings being displayed
this week in the Times office.
The 32 pictures were painted by
five members of the adult art
class during the 10 weeks course
under instructor Eugene Cota.

"Calyx spray should be ap
plied to pears as soon as all of
the petals have fallen," accord
ing to C. B. Cordy, county ex
tension agent in horticulture.
This application, he continued,
is principally for control of pear
psylla but will also control Eu
ropean red mite and green fruit
worm. All varieties should be
sprayed, he added, as pear psylla
are abundant "nearly every
where." Mixtures recommended are
one pound of 25 per cent para
thion or three-fourths pound of
EPN a 100 gallons. "Thorough
spraying is essential," Cordy
pointed out. For speed sprayers
he recommended the following:
6 pounds of parathion or 4V4
pounds of EPN an acre. One
fourth pint spreader sticker for
each 100 gallons is desirable.
Cordy concluded that "EPN
and parathion are very destruc
tive to bees, so they should be
removed from the area before
spraying. Cultivating cover crops
in bloom helps preserve native
bees."
