University of Idaho Vandals out
fumbled the Washington Huskies
but still beat them 9-5 in a
northern division Pacific Coast
conference baseball game here
Saturday.
Although committing 10 er
rors, the Vandals took advan
tage of two big innings, the
third and fourth with four-run
outbursts, to take the victory.
Harlan Melton went the route
on the mound for Idaho, giving
up seven hits although he was
wild, walking seven men.
Clevelanders Set
Bowling Record
Milwaukee (U.R) They re
wrote the record book Saturday
to include a sensational doubles
score of 1,453 set by Johnny
Klares and Steve Nagy two of
the hottest bowlers entered in
the 1952 American Bowling Con
gress tournament.
The Cleveland, Ohio, sharp
shooters left the alleys smoking
as they set the new record Fri
day with games of 511, 458 and
484. The old record of 1,415, set
at Columbus, Ohio, by Gil Zun
ker and Frank Benkovic, Mil
waukee, had stood for 20 years.

ward Relay records into the
books friday as they won the
class C and B divisions of the
big prep carnival here.
For both squads, it was their
third win in the history of the
competition. Henley, second
place winner Friday, is the only
other three-time class C winner.
Third-place Ashland posted its
third win in the class B division
last year but was unable to cope
with the talented trackmen from
Cottage Grove this year.
Three new marks were put into
the books in the class C divi
sion. Remarkabl Hear
Dale McCormick of Pleasant
Hill heaved the shot a remark
able 51 feet, 1 9-18 inches to
beat the mark held by Dean Van
Leuven of Bandon set in 1951
of 45 feet, 10'i inches.
Jerry McCall of Gervais,
jumped 20 feet, ll1. 4 inches for
a new record in the broadjump.
The old record of 20 feet, 3
inches was set by Dick Wheeler
of McKenzie In 1950.
Medley Team Romps
Pleasant Hill also chalked up
a new record when its distance
medley team of Charles Stiner,
Keith Radabaugh, Jerry Dilley
and Del Cummings romped home
with a time of 11:54.8. The old
record of 12:02.7 was set by
Pleasant Hill last year.
Only new mark in class B
competition was set in the shut
tle hurdles by the winning Cot
tage Grove team of Clarence
Smith, Jay Isley and Ken Sloan.
The trio breezed in the time of
37.1 compared to the old mark
of 37.4 set by Oakridge last year.

Activities
Forty women were entered In
the scheduled play on Thursday
at the Rogue Valley Country
club.
In the A division there were
five players with the same num
ber of fives. They were: Mrs.
Tom Culbertson Jr., Mrs. E. H.
Edgerton, Mrs. Bayard Getchell,
Mrs. Leslie Schneider, Mrs. W.
W. Davies. In the B division,
Mrs. Allyn Monroe was the
winner with five sixes. In the C
division, Mrs. Clayton Lewis
won with five sevens.
Riverview Golf and Country
club of Redding, Calif., has in
vited the women golfers of
Rogue Valley Country club to be
their guests on May 14. Members
will be contacted later regarding
transportation.
Pro Al Williams concluded
the lessons for beginners with
25 in the class. On next ladies'
day a special play has been ar
ranged for these beginners,
starting at 9 a.m. Beginners will
be paired with one experienced
player for four holes of play.

Bottler hit his homer In the
seventh.
The sole Cougar run came In
the eighth inning when Bill
Mayberry scored on Bud Boytz'
infield grounder.
GEHRMANN HONORED
New York (U.R) Don Gehr
mann, America's ace miler, Sat
urday was voted the "outstand
ing athlete trophy" for the 1952
indoor track season by the New
York Track Writers' association.
The writers also honored Pet
er L. Waters of Woodside, N.Y.,
with a trophy for his "long
time service to track and field."
Waters is a former track coach
at Manhattan college and cur
rently is coach of the New York
Police Sports association.

Fourteen Kentucky Derby
candidates raced in New York's
last major prep for the Louisville
classic but Master Fiddle, third
to Blue Man in the experimental
handicap No. 2 a week ago, was
the only horse in the field to
finish covered with glory.
A crowd of 44,250 watched
Jockey Dave Gorman lash the
roan hide of the son of First
Fiddle with his whip at the head
of the stretch and then thrilled
to the response Master Fiddle
unleashed as he charged to his
first victory of the year.

matches here on Friday. There
were six singles matches but
only five counted in the scoring.

DiMaggio turned his famous
uniform over to the Hall of Fame
in Cooperstown, N.Y., before the
Yankees' 1952 home opening loss
to the Senators Friday.
DiMaggio addressed the crowd
briefly and then threw out the
first ball on one bounce from
the Yankee dugout to home
