Planting 230,000
Seedlings Started
In National Forest
Planting of 230,000 teedling
trees on logged-over areas of the
Hogue River National forest was
started this week, according to
Forest Supervisor J. H. Wood.
Planting has been delayed this
year by the heavy snow pack,
and crews are working against
the snow line in several loca
tions, Wood said.
Species to be planted Include
Ponderosa pine at low elevations
and in dry areas, Douglas fir on
moist slopes, and Shasta red fir
at high elevations. Sugar pine
and western White pine will be
planted on areas protected from
White pine blister rust. Experi
mental plantings will be made
with Jeffrey pine and Cork Bark
fir.
Types of Cut ,
Old growth timber on the na
tional forests is cut selectively
and by the clear-cut method, de
pending upon conditions and Te
quirements on the ground. Slash
is burned after logging, to re
duce the fire hazard. Planting is
done after slash burning is ac
complished. Tree planting is practiced on
cut-over areas to supplement
natural regrowth. Planting mini
mizes brush compettiion, pro
tects the soil and water, and con
tributes to early establishment
of a new forest.
Sale Receipts Pay
Timber sale receipts pay a
large share of tree planting
costs, Wood stated, and addi
tional funds are appropriated by
congress.
The Rogue River forest an
nual planting program includes
about 1,000 acres and 600,000
seedlings, Planting is done in
the spring and fall each year.

Men's Clothes Fashions
Reflect World Unrest
Chicago IJ.R) A clothing ex

world unrest.
Bernard Epstein of New York
lold the National Association of
Retail Clothiers and Furnishers
here that men turn to color and
pattern in troubled times,
"The jazz suit and silk-stripe
suit were born in the World War
I period," he said. "World War
II saw the birth of hand painted
ties and colorful sportswear."
Epstein said the trend is to
ward sports clothes.
"Last year more than 55 per
cent of men s cut and sewn shirts
were sports shirts," he said.

Science at Work
New York (U.R) One type
of baldness may be conquered
througn use of the hormone
drug cortisone.
The drug, a product of the
adrenal glands and which al
ready has brought sensational
results in the treatment of ar
thritis, will not be prescribed
for the ordinary baldness, such
as comes with middle age, ac
cording to Drs. Stephen Roth-
man and Dr. Calvin J. Dillaha,
Chicago dermatologists.
It has been of value, however,
in the treatment of forms of
baldness known technically as
alopecia areata and alopecia to
talis. The forms of baldness at
tack both sexes with about equal
frequency and may appear in
chid hood as well.
Spontaneous Cures
The doctors, reporting in the
Journal of Investigative Dorm a
tology, said that some cases may
be cured spontaneously, partic
ularly if the first attack does
not occur before the age of 11
or 12, Relapses, however, are
frequent. The condition causes
the hair on the scalp to fall out
in patches, or it may fall out
completely. All the body hair
may also disappear.
The doctors used cortisone
after making studies which indi
cated that the condition may be
caused by an action of the body
hormones.
Patients Suffered
The doctors said all of the pa
tients treated had been ill with
the disease for periods of five
or more years. The condition is
not rare, they said, and estimates
By PAUL f. ELLIS
United Press Science Editor
show that some two and a half
per cent of patients visiting a
large dermatological clinic show
symptoms of the ailment.
The drug was given for a
period of four weeks and it was
found that three out of four pa
tients showed regrowth of hair.
The drug was given in tablet
form.
