Children's Needs
In Gold Hill Area

Teacher association held a panel
discussion and group forum on
the topic, "Today'i Child in Our
Community," at a meeting
Thursday night In the grade
ichool gymnasium.
Members of the panel includ
ed the Rev. Lyman D. Stiles, pas
tor of the Assembly of God
church, as a representative of
the church; Fred Lester, owner
of Lester's Gold Hill Supply
company, as a representative of
a business; Mrs. Ida von Busk
irk, third grade teacher, repre
senting the school, and Mrs. Don
Schmidt of North 99 highway,
representing the home. William
Hall, eighth grade teacher, acted
as moderator.
The panel discussion brought
out two main points concerning
the welfare of children in Gold
Hill. The first need was for an
adequate playground space
where children could have su
pervised play and recreation aft
er school hours and during sum
mer vacation. The second point
was the need of leaders for youth
organizations such as Boy scouts,
Girl scouts and Brownies, and
the necessity of obtaining the
backing of parents for the activi
ties of these organizations. It
was stated that only a few par
ents were enough interested to
f see that their children attended
meetings of youth groups.
The discussion was then
thrown open to the entire group
of parents and teachers attend
ing the meeting. The same con
clusions were reached by the
entire assembly.
During the business session
conducted by Mrs. Melford
Hood, president, the matter of
finding a different date or hour
for PTA meetings was taken up.
When it was found Impossible to
set a different night on which
the unit could meet without con
flicting with meetings of other
organizations, the members vot
ed to meet at 3 o'clock in the aft
ernoon on the second Thursday
of each month, the same date on
which meetings are now held. It
was arranged that Girl scouts
would provide care for children
whose mothers would be attend
ing the meetings.
An a capella chorus of 23 boys
and girls of the upper grades,
under the direction of Mrs. Mar
guerite Black, fourth grade
teacher, sang six selections. It
was announced that this chorus
would participate in the Spring
Music festival to be held in
Ashland next month.
Refreshments were served in
the school cafeteria by mothers
of pupils In the seventh grade.
Mrs. Robert Pugh and Mrs. Ray
i mond Ritter were refreshment
committee chairmen.
Officer Arrives
To Visit Parents
Lt. (jg)- Robert Bruce McKay
has arrived in Medford to spend
leave with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Ralph A. McKay, ip25
Reddy avenue. The navy officer
has been stationed In Japan for
the past two years.
Lieutenant McKay will spend
week here before reporting
for further duty.

Foresters Court Holds
Social Event Saturday
Some 200 members of the
Rogue River Valley court of the
Independent Order of Foresters
Saturday evening held tiitir sec
ond social gathering since the
formation of the court here re
cently. The event was held at the Py
thian building and featured a
talk by J. C. Carlyle, Seattle,
northwest district manager of
the foresters. Music by Dick
Spain's orchestra, square dance
calling by Jack Crump and mov
ies ior children also were on
the program.
Membership of the organiza
tion includes residents of most
sections of the valley.
