Veteran Fliers See Error
In Harsh Treatment of Men
Who Have Lost Flying Urge

eran fliers, both military and
civilian, warned that the Air
Force would make a mistake if
it dealt harshly with pilots who
lose their urge to fly.
"They may have good or bad
reasons," said Ralph Wright, 32,
"but you can't argue away the
fact that a man who doesn't want
to fly is not as effective as he
should be for that kind of a job."
Amazed at Handling
The Sioux City, la., pilot, s
combat veteran of Warld War II
and now a first officer for United
Airlines, said he was amazed by
the Air Force's handling of the
case of Lt. James G. Bristol, who
may face a court martial because
he refused to fly at Randolph
Air Force Base, San Antonio,
Tex.
"I don't know the situation
there," Wright said, "but when
I was in service they Just didn't
argue about it ... a man who
wanted to slay on the ground
was reclassified and grounded.
Many Face Similar View
Dozen of military and civilian
airmen questioned at LaGuardia
and Idlcwild International Air
port here took a similar view.
"The other men in a plane
have a right to be considered,
said Flight Engineer Harry Metz,
Jamaica, N. Y., "and I'd say a
pilot who didn't want to be a
pilot was a constant danger to
other crew members on a ship."
The Randolph case involved
five other Air Force personnel,
and Air Training Command at
Scott Air Force Base, 111., dis
closed that some 223 officers
have asked to be grounded since
January 1, because of "fear of
flying." Many were not pilots.
Bristol said he was moved to ask
for reclassification because his
wife had "flying nerves."
Grounding Understood
A navy pilot, called up from
the reserves to report to a base
in Atlanta, Ga said he under
stood his branch of the service
still allowed a pilot to ground
himself for any reason.
"I've got a daughter 4, a boy
3 years old and another on the
way," he said. "To tell you the
truth, my reaction when I got
behind the controls after that
many years away was to ask my
self ' "What in hell are you do
ing here?' " .
Andrews Sisters Blot
Miss Truman's Name

three singing Andrews Sisters
from Milwaukee, Wis., left a blot
on the name of another singer
from Independence, Mo.
When the Andrews Sisters
signed the City Hall register,
their names were opposite the
signature of Margaret Truman
who sang In the city last week.
But somebody slammed the
book before the ink was dry.
Margaret Truman's name now
Is "enrevaL, yltaP, dna enlxaM
swerdnA."
That's the Andrews Sisters
spelled backwards.

Ten Air Force officers were for

Air Force investigated two oth
er cases to determine if they
merit court martial action.
All of the officers are World
War II veterans and wear deco
rations. They are bombardiers,
navigators and radar observers
recalled from civilian life after
the Korean war began.
Cases Investigated
Four officers were charged at
Randolph Air Force base In
Texas with disobeying a superior
officer. Two other cases at that
base were under investigation.
At Mather Air Force base near
here, six other officers were un
der a preliminary charge of
direct disobedience of an order
to fly. A board of officers was
investigating to see If the men
should be court martialed.
An information officer at
Mather Field said conviction on
the charge could bring dismissal
from the service and six months
confinement.
Warned of Imprisonmeni
However, one of the officers,
Capt. Jerome M. Schechter, 35.
of Springfield, N. J., said he was
warned the penalty for refusing
to fly is five years' imprison
ment. The six officers at Mather
Field were assigned to ground
duty until the board finishes its
investigation. They are, in addi
tion to Schechter:

Pa.; Lt. James D. Snoddy, Well
ford, S. C; Lt. Ralph C. Engel,
Cleveland Heights, O.; 2nd Lt.
Joseph M. Buscaglia, Chicago;

The Randolph Field fliers who
were formally charged are:

Lt. Wayne E. Bell, 28, Urbana,

Courtney served 10 combat
missions In the Pacific. Bell flew
38 missions and Hasbrook flew
35 sorties over Europe and also
was In the Berlin airlift.
Seattle Bread Price
Slated for Increase
Seattle (U.R) Five per cent
increases In prices of bread and
pastries will go Into effect May
10 and possibly earlier under a
new price ceiling for those prod
ucts, the Office of Price Stabili
zation announced Monday.
The action was taken to help
bakers out of the price squeeze
created when wheat and sugar
costs Jumped while bakers were
operating under ceilings, Leo
Wcisfield, OPS district director,
said.
Crackers, packaged biscuits,
pretzels and cookies were not
included in the increase, he
added.

Man Feared Dead
As Tug Removes
Boat From Falls
Oregon City (U.R) John W.
Bailey was feared drowned
Tuesday after the Army engin
eers' barge Monticello removed
the 36-foot boat on which he had
been working from a rock ledge
50 feet over the precipice of
Willametle Falls without finding
a trace of the missing man.
It was first believed that
Bailey may have been trapped
aboard the Sea Scout vessel
Chinook but a search failed to
reveal any trace of the Oregon
City mechanic.
The huge barge, equipped
with a clam, hoisted the Chinook
out of the falls and placed it on
a tug. Then it was beached on a
log raft upstream from the falls.
The boat was not badly dam
aged. Bailey was last seen Saturday
night working on the vessel. A
witness who saw the boat drift
ing toward the falls said its red
running lights were burning and
that a man's shadow was defin
itely discernible.
