Freed by Communists
Salem U.R) Who tayj educa
tion doesn't pay off?
It paid off in thick, Juicy steak
thick, juicy apple pia and Ha
vana cigars for 11 convicts of
Oregon State penitentiary who
graduated from the eighth grade
in the first commencement exer
cises ever held at the state
prison.
Some 250 convicts of the ap
proximately 1,550 now calling
" that place their home attended
the graduation exercises held in
the prison mess hall.
Warden is Host
Before the exercises, Warden
Virgil O'Malley had the 11 "old
grads" in for the steak dinner,
also attended by Gov. Douglas
McKay, State Superintendent of
Public Instruction Rex Putnam,
and the members of the Capitol
press corps.
The steaks were delectable, the
apple pie delicious and the Ha
vanas savory and full-smoking.
At the commencement exer
cises which followed Governor
McKay told the grads:
Can't Taka Away Education
"Education is the one thing no
one can take away from you."
And Putnam said:
"I am quite sure that the grad
uates here tonight and the mem
bers of the student body will
never regret taking time out to
improve themselves through ed
ucation." The 250 who attended the ex
ercises make up the prison's"stu
dent body." Those who grad
uated found themselves out of
grammar school for the first time
in their lives. Other prisoners
who have had higher education
"outside" are taking university
extension courses.
The pen's "school" is housed in
a large room above the chapel.
Make Excellent Prograss
Parker Linsberry, supervisor
of education at the prison, said
despite the difficulty of conduct
ing classca with makeshift rooms I electronics, Spanish and mathe-

own regular school quarters) the
men were making excellent prog
ress in their academic education.
Gov. McKay complimented not
only the graduates and other
members of the student body but
also the convicts who are mem
bers of the faculty.

at the state penitentiary, but this

success of the occasion indicates
it will be from now on an an
nual highlight at the state penitentiary.

Spokane U.R) Hospital au

Deaconess hospital said the 42-year-old
patient was suffering
from a weakened blood vessel
wall that "bulged like a weak

ened to shut off the windpipe.
One lung collapsed and the
surgeon, whose name was not

sheet of cellophane around the
weakened vessel wall.
The surgeon reported he found
another weakened spot during
tne unusual operation, and also
"patched" it during the three and
one-half hours on the operating
table.
The cellophane causes scar tis

to form in the weakened area.
The patient walked the following
day and is recovering, the hos
