    As We Live
DON'T CONFUSE HURRYING
WITH WORKING
EFFICIENTLY
It is not always necessary to
make mistakes when you do
things in haste. Most people,
however, a o.
They contuse
hurrying with
working effi
ciently and as
a result they
allow nervous
tension to
arise.
An efficient
person works
nuirklv. He has
Dr. Huilock iearned to do
things with minimum effort and
to eliminate all unnecessary
movements. Consequently, he
gets things done in a hurry.
The person who hurries, how
ever, is not making speed be
cause he is efficient. He hurries
because he has not allowed him
self enough time to do the job
that must be done and, as a re
sult, he works himself to a tizzy.
Tlnripr emotional tension he
makes mistakes he would not
make if he undertook the job in
a calm, unemotional, thoughtful,
well-planned way. This has giv
en rise to the belief that a per
son who hurries always makes
mistakes and that hurrying,
therefore, is bad business.
Big Difference
There is a big difference be
tween hurrying and working up
to one's abilities. When a person
works up to his abilities, he
makes maximum use of every
minute of his work time and
concentrates to the utmost on
what he is doing. The person
who hurries cannot concentrate
well because he is emotionally
upset and he cannot make the
best use of his work time be
cause he is thinking more of
getting the job done than of how
he does it.
If you are a victim of hurry
ing, here are some suggestions
to correct it:
1. Plan the job before you
start to do it. Cut out unneces
sary steps and arrange to do
tasks in the most effective or
der. Allow More Time
2. Allow yourself more time
than you need to complete the
task so you will not feel rushed.
There is far less chance of rush
ing when you know you have
plenty of time than when time
is short.
3. Learn to be efficient by
studying tfie Job you are doing
so you can see where you can
take shortcuts. This will con
centrate your attention on what
you are doing and the end re
sult will then take care of itself.
Teasing: "I have always lak
) en teasing badly. It makes me
mad. My friends Jell me if I
didn't get mad, people wouldn't
iease me so much. Is this true?"
(A) It's true. It really isn't
much fun to tease a person who
pays no attention to it. If you
could convince yourself of this
and act in accordance you would
save yourself a lot of unpleas
antness. Try to remember that
people who tease really don't
mean any offense. They are just
having a bit of fun at someone
else's expense.
Arguments: "When two peo-
By ELIZABETH HURLOCK, PH.D.
pi argue and get mad at each
other before lher are married.
ar ihay likely to stop it whan
they marry?"
(A) When two people are
enough in love to think of mar
riage, they should be enough in
love to be tolerant and under
standing of each other. If they
are not, the chances are that
they never will be. And, if they
are not tolerant and understand
ing, there are bound to be
clashes of opinions that will lead
to arguments and fights. Under
such conditions, marriage would
be a risky business.
Need for Affection: "I hava
noticed that, as children grow
older, they hava less need for
affection than ihay had when
they wera younger? Why is
this?"
(A) Children have less need
for affection shown by hugs and
kisses as they grow older but
they need affection shown in a
more mature manner. This ma
ture form of affection should
be expressed in an interest in the
childs activities and Interests,
in helping him to solve his prob
lines and in being ever present
and ready to help him when he
needs help. It embarrasses an
older child to hug and kiss him,
especially when there are other
people around, but he still likes
to know that his parents and
teachers care enough for him
to want to help him when he
needs their help.

College Faculty
Follies Rehearsal
Conducted Sunday
Ashland Faculty members at
Southern Oregon college stepped
out of their traditional academic
roles yesterday long enough to
run through the first dress re
hearsal of the annual faculty
follies. The program which Pro
ducing Director Leon C. Mulling
bills as "a hodge-podge of laugh
ter, fun and music" will be pre
sented on Thursday, Friday and
Saturday evenings.
The 17-act production will be
a dramatization of the quarterly
culture tours taken to San Fran
cisco by student groups, Mulling
explained. Glimpses of Bay city
attractions reproduced will in
clude outstanding events of the
theater, musical world and local
atmosphere.
"Who would picture an Oregon
history authority as a grand
opera star or an art expert as
a polished musician or a busi
ness specialist as a dancer?'
Mulling asked. "The amount of
talent pent up behind dusty text
books for these maay years Is
unbelievable."
As an example of the high cul
tural quality of the show, Mull
ing referred to the production of
"Duck Lake" by the SOC "Corps
dee Dalay." Beverly Bennett has
directed chorography for this
number as well as that of several
other dance routines. Cay Huf
man, Alta Alvis and Dee Durham
are pianists.

. fimWA 1 ' THE FINEST CAR
y- Vigf fp-fXllV1'. AMERICA HAS VEX f flODUCEO
You owe It to your poclcetboolc to
drive this Chrysler engine before yon
buy any fine car today.
It's not a "warmed-over" engine,
but a basically brand-new one!
It gives a new kind of performance
that means new value for every
dollar you pay out for purchase,
upkeep, or operation.
It was built brand-new around a '
hemispherical combustion chamber
which makes better use of gasoline, and
also permits sounder all-round
engine structure, than any American
motor car engine has had berore.
It delivers 180 horsepower . . ;
without requiring you to buy
premium gasoline. It runs with less
waste, less heat, less friction and
less wear than previous designs
can equal. Its combustion is so
clean it literally develops almost
no carbon deposit at all.
It will last longer than any
engine you've ever known. It
will cost you less along the way. It
will stay "young" in performance .
thousands of miles past the
point where an ordinary engine
shows old age.
And on top of all that, it makes
driving a lot more pleasure! Its smooth
response ... its saioty-power, in
reserve for emergencies ... its easy
scorn for distance or hills . . . make you
just plain feel good at the wheel
as you've never felt before.
For the good of your purse and your
pleasure too ... we invite you
to drive it, soon!
