Electric Guitar Gets
Phone Conversations
Cleveland, O. (U.R) There
are times when 15-year-old Fred
Keyerieber isn't sure what sort
of musical instrument he owns.
Normally, he has an electric
guitar, but lately when he turns
his hand to practicing, he has
found the contraption picking up
police calls and taxi drivers'
radio-telephone conversations.
Theoretically, sound technic
ians have explained to young
Keyerieber, the instrument can
and does pick up, in radio
fashion, such messages if sent in
the immediate vicinity of his su
burban home.

North-South Europe Water
Link Revived in Talks
Paris (UJ!) The long talked
about project to build a water
link between northern and
southern Europe has been re
vived. The French government has
disclosed it is studying plans and
costs of a canal joining the Rhone
and Rhine rivers.
Such a canal would provide a
1,300-mile-long inland waterway
traversing the western continent
from the North Sea, near Ham
burg, to the Mediterranean, near
Marseilles.
The canal would Join the
Rhine and Rhone in Switzerland,
where both rivers start. The
Rhine flows northward between
France, Germany and through
the Netherlands. The Rhone
flows southward through south
ern France.
Construction of such a link, an
international undertaking, has
modern precedent in the recent
agreement among France, Italy
and Switzerland to build the
longest vehicular tunnel in the
world through the base of Mont
Blanc, Europe's highest peak.
To Use Lakes
The envisaged Rhone - Rhine
link would make use of Swisr
lakes lying between the two
rivers, French authorities said.
"Our aim is to link togethei
the Franco-Swiss Leman Lake
through which the Rhone river ,
flows to such Swiss lakes as
Neuchatel, Bienne, the small
Aare river and finally the Rhine
river near Basle in Switzerland,'
a spokesman of the French government-owned
Compagnie Na
tionale du Rhone said.
He said the undertaking would
be between 90 and 120 miles
long, linking the 700-mile-long
Rhine river with the 500-mile-long
Rhone.
Revenue Bonds Gain
In City Importance
Chicago (U.R) Revenue bonds
are becoming more important in
financing needed city improve
ments, a survey shows.
The Municipal Finance Offi
cers association said that in 1951
revenue bonds accounted for
about 20 per cent of all municipal
bond sales. Such sales totaled
nearly $3,300,000,000.
"The trend toward revenue
bonds is apt to continue since a
number of states took legislative
action to extend authority to use
revenue bonds for purposes not
previously sanctioned," the as
sociation said.
"Use of revenue bonds for sew
age plants and facilities was au
thorized in Florida, Illinois, Kan
sas and Pennsylvania."
Such bonds also may be issued
for airports in Indiana, auditor
iums in South Dakota, toll
bridges in Illinois and Tennessee
and for construction of industrial
plants leased to manufacturers
in Alabama, Mississippi, Ken
tucky and Tennessee, the associa
tion said.

"Such a canal would be the
outstanding achievement of the
century," he said, "it would al
low a north-south traffic for the
first time throughout Ihe conti
nent." The spokesman recalled that
the Rhine river flows through
such highly industrialized areas
as German - Switzerland; Lor
raine, in France; the Ruhr in
Germany and the Rhine delta,
in the Netherlands.
Rivers Connected
"One must not disregard the
fact that the Rhine is connected
with such important rivers as
the Moselle in France and Ger

The spokesman also explained
that the French Rhone river is
about to become completely navi

"Part of the Rhone river has

which backs an artificial lake of

said, explaining that the Mar
