Post Office Clerk
Promoted to New
Supervisory Job
Stanley G. Sherwood, an em
ployee of the Medford post of
fice since July, 1920, has been
promoted to the supervisory
staff here, it was announced to
day by Postmaster Moore Ham
ilton. Sherwood Joined the post of
fice as a carrier shortly after
high graduation from Medford
high school, Hamilton said, and
later was promoted to clerk in
the finance section. He has now
been named clerk in charge, and
will have supervision of outgo
in mail.
Other supervisory personnel
at the office here include Hugo
Guenther, assistant postmaster;
Otto DeJarnett, superintendent
of mails, and Earl York, asistant
superintendent of mails. The
post to which Sherwood was
named is a newly-created one.
Hamilton also revealed that
stamp sales during the first
quarter of 1952 increased about
18 per cent over the comparable
period last year. They totaled
$91,843 in January, February
and March, compared to $78,987
in the same months of 1951.
Library Board Names
New President Tuesday
Erie Allen Jr. was elected
president of the Medford Li
brary board at a special meeting
held in the office of Mayor
Diamond Flynn last night
The meeting followed city
council action confirming two
new members appointed to fill
vacancies, and the reappoint
ment of two present members.
The new members are ' Jack
Fitzgerald and Elwood Hed
burg; the reappointed members
are Mrs. Frances Cochran and
Mrs. Allen R. Smith. '
Allen was appointed, to the
board two weeks ago to succeed
John Boyle, former chairman,
who resigned last month.
Transport Plan Stat
Will Face Backward
Washington (U.B The Air
Force announced Wednesday
that a number of C-131 twin
engine transport planes have
been ordered equipped with seats
facing backward.
Tests have shown that a pas
senger has a better chance of
surviving a plane crash if he is
in a seat facing backward rather
than the conventional type
which faces forward.
County Savings
Top $17,000,000
An informal survey of the
amount of money held in savings
accounts by residents of Jackson
county yesterday revealed that
the total is close to $18,000,000.
or something more than about
$300 for each man. woman and
child in the area.
The amount held in savings
accounts in the two savings and
loan associations slightly ex
ceeds $7,000,000. the survey
showed, and the savings accounts
of the two Medford banks, and
the branch banks in Central
Point and Ashland totaled more
than $10,000,000.
The survey did not take into
account savings in financial in
stitutions outside the county,
nor did it include other methods
of savings, including war bonds,
stocks and other securities.

$2 battery from a car sales lot.
He revealed that leaking battery
acid had ruined his new cover
alls. He also was fined $25 and
costs.

Klamath Tribs May
Be Separate Group

which may make the Klamath
Indian tribe a saparate organiza
tion and responsible only to It
self. The U. S. government's advis
ory committee on Indian affairs
has suggested the tribe incorpor
ate to separate it from the fed
eral government.
All tribal business, such as
timber sales, which are now the
responsibility of the govern
ment, would be handled by the
corporation. Officials of the
Klamath tribe are studying the
proposal.

seed potatoes at prices higher
than ceiling for table stock pota
toes has been specifically pro
hibited by the Office of Price
Stabilization. Portland District
OPS Director Carl Donaugh said
Wednesday.
OPS said in statement. It is
apparent that these potatoes
have been sold for and consumed
as ordinary table stock pota
toes." Seed potatoes are exempt
from price control.
The price office said "the sale
of potatoes to housewives has
been so serious and so wide
spread that immediate action is
necessary to protect consumers
against higher prices and to
guard against the depleting of
seed potato supplies."

tigating a four-car collision dis
covered that one driver, George
T. Newton, S3, didn't have a
driver's license. Newton, it
turned out, was a lieutenant on
the Oklahoma City police force,
with a record of 21 years in uniform.

Coulee reservoir dropped to the
lowest level in Its 10-year
istencc Tuesday, Bonneville
Power Administration said.
The water level gauge read i
1225.1 feet above sea level,
about 35 feet below the spillway
level. At the crest of the 1948
flood, water in the pool rose to
the 1290-foot mark.
Heavy and prolonged drain of
"storage hydro" by the dam a 18
generators was responsible for
the record low water level, BPA
said.
Former Medford Man
Dies in Tucson, Ariz.
Harvey Davis, 63, Tucson,
Ariz., a former resident of Med
ford. died in Tucson hospital
recently, it was learned here
today.
Davis, a Marine Corps veteran
of World War I, was active in
Medfora American Legion af
fairs during his residence here,
and for a time was an announc
er for radio station KMED. He
left here in 1933.
