the thick of the contest for the

ident. No one would guess that she
might hope to be wearing the
Paris clothes next spring in
Washington as first lady.

linois primary would produce

ver's backers forecast another
primary victory for the Tennes

the Illinois contest was the write-
in effort for Stevenson.

ford is about to receive a "Helen"
to put in her trophy case beside
her Oscar.
Unlike the Oscor, the "Helen,"
modeled after Helen of Troy, is
given for physical charms alone.
It was mailed to the 42-year-old
Hollywood actress by Bernard
Guro, president of the American
Beauticians Congress, after the
congress picked her as the most
glamorous woman of the year.
Jane Wyman's Short
Engagement Broken

gagement of actress Jane Wyman
and wealthy contractor Travers
Kleef ield has been nipped in the
bud.
Miss Wyman, the former wife
of actor Ronald Reagan, disclos
ed Monday that the engagement
of less than a month was off.
The one-time academy award
winner said, however, that she
and Kleefield were still "very
good friends."

The Eisenhowers now live in
a two-storied, 14-room villa fur
nished by the French govern
ment in picturesque Mames la
Coquette, close enough to Ike's
headquarters so he can get home
for lunch.
Garden Included
Its grounds include a neatly
manicured garden, a tennis
court, a putting green which
Mamie had installed as a sur
prise for the general, and a pond
stocked with trout. She has given
the villa characteristic feeling of
"home away from home."
Mamie long has said the life
of an Army officer's wife is most
ly concerned with taking care of
little things, letting her husband
concentrate on major decisions
connected with his career.
The "little things" range from
making sure Ike's breakfast is
hot to carry responsibility for
dinners which may include an
American senator one night and
the head of a foreign govern
ment the next.
Misses Family
Mrs. Eisenhower , misses most
seeing her son and daughter-in-law
and two grandchildren
"any grandmother will know
how I feel about that that's
known as grandmother's dis
ease." She sometimes is wistful for
the farm near Gettysburg, Pa.,
which she and Ike bought short
ly before he took over the Euro
pean command post. She is con
scious, too, of the big pay cut he
took when he left Columbia
University, and gets good use
out of her mail-order charge ac
counts in New York.
