Plays Tag Game With Cops

playing a deadly game of tag
with police in the dense sugar
cane fields of this island ior al
most 17 monthsi
, Antonio Correa Cotto, 32, now
has a $1,500 price on his head as
the most notorious killer Puerto
Rico has seen in at least half a
century. He has murdered four
persons and is partly responsible
for two other killings.
. His record, which goes back to
1941. includes many other at
tempted murders. He usually
uses a .38 caliber revolver. He
alwavs takes his victims by but
prise, usually 'late at night, and
before despatching them makes
some comment such as: "You
dirty pig, I'm going to kill you!
All of Correa Cotto's victims
have been accused by him of try
ing to turn him in to the police.
Insular authorities, facing ris
ing public indignation and the
threat of a legislative investiga
' tion, are trying hard to capture
the escaped fugitive, dead or
alive. It is regarded as certain,
however, that he will not sur
render. -
Three bloodhounds from Flor
ida were put on his trail and
' every policeman who could be
spared from service elsewhere
has been assigned to the case.
The chief of police, Col. Salvador
T, Roig, is directing the man
hunt. Aiding local authorities are
four Florida police officials who
brought the bloodhounds here by
plane. They are J. A. Youell, as
sistant chief of the Miami police;
A. Hagan Parrish, sheriff of Polk
county; Tom Lipe of the Miami
police and Carl Andrews of the
Polk County sheriffs office.
Criticism of police has mainly
centered around the fact that the
convict has been operating in and
around the city of Ponce his
home town on the southern
coast. That is, in an area of not
more than 30 square miles.
Puerto Rico itself is only 100
miles long and 35 miles wide.

also by lack of cooperation of
many citizens who fear Correa
Cotto will get them before police
succeed in getting him
Authorities are sure he is re
ceiving help, either voluntarily
or forcibly,
Correa Cotto is illiterate, about
five and a half feet tall, and
weighs 135 pounds. He has slight
ly curly black hair, a mustache
and "cold" eyes. His face is scar
red across the lips, over one eye
brow and also on the forehead.
He splashed into prominence
when he, as one of the ringlead
ers, and 111 other convicts shot
their way out of the insular pen
itentiary on Oct. 28, 1950. Two
guards were killed and Correa
Cotto is considered probably
most responsible,
At the time he was serving two
life sentences for two murders.
Puerto Rico has no death pen
alty.
All except Correa Cotto were
recaptured or killed. Three
months later Correa Cotto ap
peared in Ponce, killed two per
sons, wounded four others and
disappeared.
Since then he has become
something of a legendary fig
ure a cross between John Dil
linger and Kilroy. He was "seen"
in almost every town in Puerto
Rico and some theorists had him
gone to New York, Chicago and
even Korea.
Correa Cotto turned up on
Feb. 25,1951, in Ponce and tried
to kill his cousin. Although po
lice were watching the area, he
came back again 48 hours later.
That time he wounded an elderly
man, allegedly raped his preg
nant wife twice and then burned
down their house.
Shortly afterwards he ex
changed shots with police and
escaped again, although he was
believed to have been wounded.

Notice is hereby given that the
Council of the City of Medford. did.
on the 1st day of April.-1952. by reso
lution. Initiate proceedings to vacate
the alley in the City of Medford. Ore
gon, described a follow:
. The Northerly and Southerly alley
in Block 42 (original town) City of
Medford, Jackson County. Oregon,
and did provide for public hearing
to be held at the hour of 7:30 o'clock
p.m.. on the 6th day of May. 1952.
at the Council Chamber in the City
Hall of said City of Medford. for th
purpose of considering a vacation of
and adoption of an ordinance vacating
said alley as hereinbefore described,
and for the further purpose of hear
ing and consideing any objection or
remonstrance thereto, which may be
made in writing and filed with the
Recorder of the City of Medford prior
to the date of such hearing.
