Mundt Asks for Airing of Deals
I nvolving Promoter Frank Nathan
Washington (U.R) Sen. Karl
E. Mundt said .Saturday that
three surplus property deals in
volving Pittsburgh promoter
Frank Nathan should be "ventil
ated thoroughly."
The South Dakota Republican,
a member of the Senate's per
manent investigating committee,
said he was "curious" about why
Nathan collected "substantial

commissions" on the deals.
The committee's chief counsel,
Francis D. Flanagan, disclosed
Friday that Nathan received
$92,000.
Nathan To Be Called
Nathan, self-styled "maker of
deals," will be called before the
committee next week to explain
what services he performed to
earn the fees.
The three transactions were
the sale by the War Assets Ad
ministration of a government
owned aluminum plant at Tor
rance, Calif., a refinery at Cot
ton Valley, La., and a surplus
metal processing equipment at !
Canonsburg, Pa., in 1948 and
1949.
Fees Paid By Purchasers
Flanagan said Nathan re
ceived a $57,000 fee in the Tor
rance sale, $30,000 in the re
finery case and $3,000 in the
Canonsburg case. The fees were
paid by the purchasers.
Jess Larson, former head of
the War Assets Administration,
told the committee Friday he
did not know of Nathan's inter
est in the three cases until late
last year.
Larson, now General Services
administrator, requested the
committee inquiry after news
paper stories criticized the Tor
rance transaction and linked him
I with Nathan, a key figure in tax
. scandal hearings conducted by a
House ways and means subcom
mittee.
Nathan Persistent
Larson described Nathan as a
"very persistent" man who was
trying to get in through the back
door, front door, window or
kitchen."
Larson said he put Nathan's
name on a confidential "watch
list" after he received word from
the Justice Department late in
1948 that Nathan claimed to be
a close friend of his.
He said he had no financial
transactions with Nathan.

US Bomber Vings
Reported Headed
To West Europe
Washington (U.R) Ten more
wings of U. S. light bombers
and fighter-bombers will be sent
to Europe to provide tactical sup
port for Allied defense forces,
informed sources said Saturday.
They will make a total of 15
wings of tactical combat planes
furnished by the United States
to support ground troops being
built up in western Europe
against a threat of Communist
aggression.
Equipped for A-Bombs
Many of the planes in the 10
additional combat wings will be
equipped to deliver atomic
bombs. But informed sources in
dicated that U. S. atomic bombs
will continue to be stored only
in this country, at least for the
time being.
Atomic service squadrons are
being trained to fly A-bombs im
mediately to Europe in case of
an emergency. Under this plan,
atomic bombs would be avail
able within about 24 hours for
use by U. S. bombers based in
Europe.
Sent When Bases Ready
The additional U. S. tactical
combat wings will be sent to
Europe as soon as bases there
are completed for them. Some
of the U. S. wings probably will
not reach Europe until next
year.
North Atlantic treaty organi
zation leaders recently approved
building up the Joint Allied air
force in Europe to 3.000 planes,
with 200 air fields, by the end
of this year.

U. S. wings would comprise
from one-fifth to one-fourth 'of
this force. About one-half of all
the planes will be U. S.
A light bomber wing has from j
48 to 64 combat planes. A fighter 1
bomber wing has 75 war planes.

test Association tournament.
Taylor swallowed the bivalves
at the rate of 33.7 per minute,
thus besting his own mollusk
munching record set last year
when he ate 273 In the same
time.
Rewarded WUa Sheila
. As a reward, he was adorned
with a crown of clam shells. He
also was kissed by Miss Halibut
Cheeks of 1932. queen of the
Seattle Waterfront Halibut-Head-Choppers-Off.
The Clamora was conducted
on a gravel barge in Elliott Bay.
Taylor out-gulped six other
mussel men including quahog
gormets from Mexico, Canada
and New Jersey.
The New Jersey entry, 270
pound -Izry Weintraub, a jitney
bus driver from Atlantic City,
said his defeat was a clamamity.
He explained that he won the
Eastern Seaboard championship
eating raw clams, "while out
here in the West where men are
supposed to be men, you eat
them cooked. Gad!
Needed Nourishment
As a matter of fact. Weintraub
was so exhausted after the con
test he clamored for nourishment
and finally got a double-decker
sandwich. Clam sandwich, of
course. Raw.
Not a breeze stirred when the
contest started under sunny
skies. The bay was becalmed.
Some 1.500 vice-presidents of the
IPFSCECA Joined a flock of
hungry seagulls and watched
with envy as the entrants began
eating from the open shell.
Slurped to Early Lead
Taylor slurped to an early
lead and never was headed. Ob
servers attributed his victory to
excellent esophagus control.
In second place was Jo Gag
non, 1949 champion who ate 332.
James Lobdell, Seattle's 1952
city champion with 262 was
third. Jose Martinez of Guada
lupe. Mexico, with 203 was
fourth: while Weintraub was
fifth with 199.
