Musical Society
Benefit Concert
Set for April 22
Medford Musical society has
announced its annual spring
concert for Tuesday, April 22,
at Medford senior high school
auditorium. The concert,' which
will benefit the society's schol
arship fund, will feature Jo
sephine Spaulding, meizo-so-crano
of Portland, and Doris
Helen Calkins, harp virtuoso
from Eugene.
Mrs. Spaulding is said to be
well-known throughout the
Northwest. She is described as
engaging and personable and
those who have heard her are
enthusiastic about her appear
ance here. She is a graduate of
Willamette university and later
attended Juilliard School of Mu
sic, New York.
Mrs. Calkins is said to be
one of the west coast's finest
harpists. She is a member of the
University School of Music fac
ulty. A string quartet, which has
performed with success through
out the state, will appear with
Mrs. Calkins.

ning for a small dinner, with din
ner to be served at Tabu follow
ing cocktalis at the Miller home,

After dinner the group will
go to Rogue Valley Country
club for the benefit dance being
given as part . of the annual
fund drive of Oregon Society
for Crippled Children and Ad
ults. Guests for the dinner will be

and Mrs. Frank Humphrey, Mrs.

diner. Mrs. Colton's birthday an

Naomi Drew, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John T.

Traveler Leaves
For Trip Abroad
Mrs. I. E. Schuler left last
week for Portland, from where
she will leave later in the month
for . New York and Europe. She
plans to be away from the city
for several months and the Schu
ler home at 112 Medford heights
is now occupied by Mr. and "Mrs.
John Winton and their two sons.
The Wintons, formerly of Min
neapolis, came to Medford from
Berkeley, Cal.
Mrs. Schuler will go to Ger
many for a visit with Major
and Mrs. Virgil M. Lancaster,
who at one time lived in Med
ford and are now in Berlin. In
Berlin she will be met by Mr.
and Mrs. Halbert Eckern of Vi
enna,' and will accompany the
Eckerns to Vienna for an indefi
nite stay. Mr, Eckern is with the
state department of the United
States.-'.
While in. Europe Mrs. Schuler
plans a visit with Harold Stie
ler in Nurnberg. Mr. Stieler
spent a year in Ashland during
the 1949-50 school year as a
student at Southern Oregon col

Committees Make
Final Plans for
Annual Luncheon
Social events will be at a mini
mum in the city this week, since
it is Holy Week, but committees
of St. Ann's Altar society of
Sacred Heart Catholic church
will complete plans for the an
nual Easter Monday, luncheon
For many years past women of
the society have marked the close
of the Lenten season with the
large benefit luncheon.
This year's part on Monday,
April 14, will be at the YMCA
with cards to follow luncheon.
General chairman for the
party is Mrs. Louis Lemire. As

English Visitor
Arrives in City
-Mrs. Marie Burger, Maid
stone, Kent, England, arrived
last week to visit for several
weeks with her daughter, Mrs
R. K. Schott. Mr. Schott, and
their children, David and Caro
lyn Sue, 139 White Oak drive.
Mrs. Burger's home is located
about 35 miles southeast of Lon
don.
The traveller made the entire
trip by plane. This is her second
visit here, spending some time
with daughter and family about
four years ago. Mrs. Schott came
to live in the valley from Eng
land about five years ago.

Sorority Chapter
Has Annual Election
Officers for the coming year
were elected when Alpha Rho
chapter, of Beta Sigma Phi met
Tuesday evening in the home of
Mrs. Ray Dallaire, 1060 Crater
Lake avenue.
Mrs. Treavell Turpin was
elected president; Mrs. W. H.
Fisher, vice-president; Mrs. May
nard Paup, secretary; Mrs. Ray
Clark, treasurer, and Mrs. Har
vey Bell, extension officer. Mrs.
Edward Bunnell is the new pro
gram chairman.
Members of the city council
are Mrs. Turpin, Mrs. Clark and
Mrs. David Bergstrom.
Mrs. John Lamberty conduct
ed the program on music.
Refreshments were served by
Mrs. Dallaire. The next meeting
will be in the home of Mrs. Bun
nell at 111 Portland avenue. Mrs.
R. F. Mundy will be hostess. -

Kray Bateman in ceremonies
performed at 8 p. m., March IS,
in the First' Methodist church.
About 85 guests attended the
rites which were read by the
Rev. Meredith A. Groves.
The bride, a senior at Medford
high school, is a daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. John T. Drew,
and the bridegroom's parents
are Mr. and Mrs. Peter R. Bate
man, all of Medford.
Miss Norma Funk was maid
of honor and Arthur Bateman
acted as best man for his
brother. .
Ushers were John Drew,
brother of the bride, and Bruce
Bateman, another brother of the
bridegroom.
Mr. Drew gave his daughter
in marriage. For her wedding
she wore a royal blue suit with
white accessories. Her corsage
was an arrangement of white
and light blue carnations.
Miss Funk wore a suit of pink
e'ith white accessories and her
corsage was of blue and white
carnations.
Misses Anne Weaver and Bet
ty Buckingham were candle
lighters. The bride's mother wore a
gray suit with white accesso
ries and corsage of pink and
blue carnations. The bride
groom's mother wore a blue suit
with, white accessories and cor
sage of white carnations and red
rosebuds.
Baskets of white and pink
snapdragons, blue blossoms,
ferns and palms, with candles,
furnished church decorations.
Miss Frances Troxell sang and
Bill Walker was organist.
About 65 persons attended
the reception held at the home
of the bride's parents. Serving
were the Misses Jacquie Bates,
Joan Van Horn, Anne Weaver
and Betty Buckingham.
The couple made a wedding
trip to San Francsico and are
living at route 2, box 275 K,
Medford.
Out-of-town relatives at the
wedding were Mrs. Marie Fors-
lund, Beaverton, Ore., and Mrs.
Clara Jones, Vancouver, Wash.

April Meeting
Set For Temple
Zuleima temple. Daughters of
the Nile, will meet April 12,
Saturday, for the first session
since new officers of the group
were installed. The session is set
for 2 p.m. in the Grants Pass
Masonic temple.
A tea will take place after
the meeting with Roseburg Nile
club members as hostesses. Mrs.
H. Holmes will be the chairman.
There will be a practice for all
officers at 10:30 a.m., Saturday.
Four Stat Officers
Of British Daughters
Honored at Luncheon
The visit here last week of
Mrs. Ralph Johnston, Portland,
president of the Daughters of the
British Empire -in Oregon, and
three DBA state board members,
was the occasion Wednesday of a
luncheon at the Medford hotel.
The board members are Mrs. J.
L. Hooper, recording secretary;
Mrs. May Thorn, treasurer; and
Mrs. J. B. Hanton, Oregon secre
tary, all from Portland.
Nine members of Bow Bells
chapter here also attended the
luncheon. The visitors were pre
sented corsages of early spring
flowers.
After the luncheon the group
made a sightseeing trip of valley
points of interest.
During the well-attended busi
ness meeting that evening Mrs.
Johnston gave a report on a new
building at the DBA California
home and Mrs. Thorn gave a talk
on finances of the Oregon chap
ters. Mrs. Gwin Edwards and
Mrs. G. A. Allingham served refreshments.
Candidate and Wife
Guests in Medford
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Lindas,
Oregon City, left Wednesday for
Klamath Falls after having been
guests in Medford in the home
of Mrs. W. L. Greenleaf, 103
South Holly street. Mr. Lindas,
who formerly lived in Medford,
is a candidate for the office of
attorney general for Oregon on
the Republican ticket.
Sunday evening Mr. and Mrs.
J. R. Smith were hosts for a
dinner which honored Mr. and
Mrs. Lindas, entertaining in
their home, 1033 Reddy avenue.
Present were Mr. and Mrs. Lin
das, William A. Thelin, Milwau
kie, Ore., Mr. and Mrs. W. P.
Tucker, the Smith's daughters,
Misses Sydney and Jerilyn
Smith, and the hosts.

week of the wedding of Mrs. J.
W. Louterette and Ted Zahnow
in Reno, Nev., March 22. The
newlyweds are living in Medford.

Dickson, to Michael Colbert, son

Miss Dickson's fiance is station
ed with the Coast Guard at Phila
delphia. He attended Southern
Oregon college for 2V4 years and
has been in the Coast Guard
for years.
