Portland city council.
The increase in fares from the
present 13 cents for a single ride
gave city officials new hope that
a threatened strike by Portland
Traction company employees
could be settled before the strike
deadline Monday.
Council Votes 3 to 1
The city council voted 3 to 1
Friday to raise the single ride
fare to 15 cents; to fix the price
of a weekly pass at $2.40, and
to increase the student fare to
seven cents.

The General Motors mobile
diesel training school will open
its five day session Monday at
Lilenquist Motors, 1016 North
Riverside avenue, and the firm
announced that the public is in
vited to attend the first meet
ing of the training. .
The training will start at 8
a. m. and last until 5 p. m. each
day.
A particular invitation is ex
tended to the public to see the
showing of two sound movies,
"Diesel, the Modern Power,
and "ABC of Diesel Engines.1
They will be shown at 8 p. m.
Monday. The three - cylinder
GMC diesel engines that are to
be used in the 2V-ton GMC
trucks will be featured.
Other sessions of the training
school are limited to 12 men,
The training unit brought here

Route Revealed for Annual
AAA Economy Run April 14-
Los Angeles The course for
the 1952 Mobilgas "economy
run" will be a three-day, 1,415
mile trek across four states, it
was revealed Saturday by the
American Automobile associa
tion. Sponsored by the General
Petroleum corporation, the run
will be held April 14, 15 and
16. Results will be announced
April 17.
The route, from downtown
Los Angeles to Sun Valley, Ida.,
longest and most rigorous ever
attempted by an economy run.

Subject to the union's mem
bership approval, the agreement
provides an hourly wage in
crease of 7',i cents retroactive
to April 1, three additional paid
holidays and an increase of night
differential from four to six
cents. Loggers on the "hoot owl"
or early morning shift will get
the night differential.
The contract also has to be
approved by the wage stabiliza
tion board.

The mileage and performance
test will subject the cars to more
road, temperature and altitude
conditions than the average mo
torist would encounter in
year's driving. Highest point
on the route is between Marble
Canyon and Jacob Lake in Ari
zona, where the altitude is
8,010 feet. Lowest spot is 70
feet below sea level at the junc
tion of Highways 111 and 99
near Indio, Cal.
The drivers will climb above
6,000 feet 12 times during the
run. Temperatures over the
course have ranged from 103
degrees at Blythe, Cal., to 1.8
degrees below zero at Grand
Canyon in the past, according
to the United States weather
bureau.
Try To Smoke Out Wife
Gives Man Prison Term

to smoke out his wife from
bedroom had a 38-year-old man
headed for prison Saturday.
After a family quarrel in
which the wife reportedly threw
a fish at her husband, Frank
Reichard retaliated by tossing i
flaming newspaper into the bed
room barricaded by the wife. He
then told her "to croak in there,'
the wife. Mrs. Laura Reichard,
35. testified.
Judge Carlton A. Fisher told
Reichard he could give him up
to 40 years for his conviction of
first degree arson, but reduced
it to from two to five years, fig

Confusion Claimed
On Projected Dam
Washington (U.R) Sen.
Wayne Morse Saturday accused
opponents of Hell's Canyon dam,
including the governor of Idaho,
with trying to confuse and mis
lead the House Interior Affairs
committee.
The Oregon Republican said
testimony before the commit
tee this week was intended "to
scare the people of Idaho" into
believing there is not enough
water in the Snake river for
both upstream irrigation and
power production at Hell's Can
yon. Morse said he will testify in
support of the project after the j
usier recess.
He said Gov. Len Jordan of
Idaho, who wants to use all the
Snake's water, for Idaho irriga
tion, neglected to say that pow
er revenues from Hell's Canyon
or a similar dam are needed to
repay the cost of irrigation
works.
