cock, Klamath Falls, is chair
man. ' Hearings scheduled -this week
will be in Astoria and Newport
tomorrow, in Coos Bay : and
Roseburg Friday, and the Satur
day afternoon hearing here, fol
lowed by one in Klamath Falls
in the evening.
Hearings will also be held in
The Dalles and La Grande April
18, and Ontario and Redmond
April 19..
Portland, Salem Later
Meeting dates in Portland and
Salem will be announced later.
Senator Hitchcock has invited
the public to attend the hearings,
and to present their views on
the problem. "Members of the
committee do not have any par
ticular plan which they are spon
soring, but wish to hear of the
suggested ones in order to cor
relate them before submitting
the final report," he said.
"From these discussion hear
ings the many ideas toward re
apportionment will be tabulated
and given consideration by the
committee. As you know the re
port will be submitted to the
1953 legislature," he added.'

There were 36,679,316 visitors
to national park and monument
areas in 1951, a new travel rec
ord. This is a 12 per cent increase
over the record set in 1950.
Pear Psylla Active;
Spray Recommended
Rogue valley orchard ists were
warned today that pear psylla is
now becoming active and is lay
tog eggs. The pear psylla "over
winter' 'on trees as adults and an
examination of trees yesterday

ogist, disclosed that there are
newly laid eggs and a scattering
of adult psylla in several orch
ards. v-
According to C B. Cordy,
county extension agent for. hor
ticulture, the large number of
eggs which the psylla are laying
shows the necessity of applying
a calyx spray to pear trees for
control. One spray at calyx time
will ordinarily give control, but
in orchards where psylla are
most numerous it may be neces
sary to spray a second time later
in the summer, Cordy states.

March Building Total
$219,793 in Medford
A total of 73 building permits,
valued at $219,793, was issued
by the city of Medford during
March, a report for the month
revealed today. Leading the:
number of permits were 21, val
ued at $183,900, for new resi
dences. The number of permits issued
last month showed a sharp in
crease from the previous month
and from March, 1951, when 50
and 55 respectively were issued.
Total value for March, 1951,
however, was $234,560. Valua
tion for February, 1952, was
$216,757.
Other permits issued last
month included 24, valued at
$18,470, for repairing and re
modeling new residences; 8, val
ued at $3,950, for private ga
rages; 2, valued at $4,000, for
new businesses; 9, valued at $8,
898, for remodeling and repair
ing business buildings, and 2,
valued at $575, fox minor
buildings.

Officials Criticized
For Prisoner Release
Salem (U.R) Warden Virgil
O'Malley Wednesday issued a
criticism of officials at Oregon
State prison for letting a convict
go two hours earner than they
should have.
John H. Parker, 27, had served
a two-year sentence and was re
leased Monday two hours before
Klamath county authorities ar
rived to take him into custody as
he stepped through the prison
gates. . V
Warden O'Malley said Park
er's record clearly showed that
Klamath county had a detainer
on him and he said it was "just
plain carelessness' that allowed
Parker to be released before the
Klamath officials arrived to take
him into custody, r
