. A laborer named Manuel Rosa
was found guilty recently in su
perior court of bigamy, a felony,
for violating an untested 1949
state law that poked holes in
the "quickie" Nevada and Mex
ico divorces. The law provides
that a hurried out-of-state di
vorce Is illegal if you live in
California for 12 months before
t'- Jcre and return to the state
within 18 months afterwards. -heiurned

And Rosa, the court ruled, had
gone direct from California to
his Las Vegas decree and then
returned a few weeks later to a
honeymoon cottage with a new
wife in California. The court
gave laborer Rosa probation and
fobid him to live with any wo
man other than the wife who
became his "ex" in Nevada.
Crooner Frank Sinatra won a
divorce in Las Vegas and mar
ried Ava Gardner a week later.
His first wife, Nancy, got her
own and legal divorce in Cali
fornia, but it isn't final yet.
If she wanted to raise a fuss
or if the Los Angeles district
attorney wanted to prosecute
criminal charges could be
brought on grounds Frankie still
was married when he tied the
knot with Ava. 1
Must File Charges
However, any person affected
by the law can be charged with
bigamy only if an ex-mate, or the
district attorney, decides to file
charges. District Attorney S. Ern
est Roll says he doesn't plan to
prosecute any such bigamy cases.

Strike Finds Favor
With Woodworkers

tional Woodworkers of America
said Wednesday that early re
turns from the strike ballot sent
50,000 members in the Pacific
Northwest indicate 98 per cent
of the workers are in favor of
the walkout.
Official count of the ballots
will start April 17, he said.
A special meeting of the
Northwest regional negotiating
committee was scheduled Wed
nesday to outline action against
what Hartung called "company
staling." v

of which in addition to race,
color and creed provisions pro
hibit refusal to hire because of
age, physical handicap or status
a a veteran, draftee or re
servist. Anti-discrimination laws now
are in effect in nine states
Colorado, Connecticut, Massa
chusetts, New Jersey, New Mex
ico, New York, Oregon, Rhode
Island and Washington.
Among the changes In wage
and hour laws, New York
amended its law requiring cash
payment of wages to permit a
farmer to pay "in kind."
Illinois cut the time in which
semi-monthly wages must be
paid from 18 to 13 days after
the end of the earning period. :
