football is a game for grown
men, not for growing boys, and

played only by men of college or
university age.

tional Education Association and
the American Medical Associa
tion condemned the practice of
interschool athletic competition

tal evils of interscholastic ath
letics, in junior high school, in

Michigan School of Education

"The selection of a few early
maturing athletic stars is made
at the expense of a sports pro
gram for all the pupils.".
If it happens that such an early
maturing athletic star is your
son, and your compensation for
an inferiority complex,' it's just
fine, isn't it? You don't want
your boy to be a namby pamby.
You want him to get in there
and take whatever hard knocks
are necessary to make a man of
him. You windbag.
If the youngster in his eager
ness to do his . bit and more if
posible for team, school, coach
and cheering crowd happens to
sustain some trifling but repeated
damage to intervertebral discs,
joint cartilage or growth cartil
age, the immediate disability
may be temporary but ultimate
results may "handicap the boy for
years or permanently. I'm not
just croaking about it, but quot
ing the statement of a distin
guished orthonedic surgeon.
Whenever any outsider or any
adviser other than the regular
teachers is permitted to take a
hand in the athletic program of
the school, you may be sure your
boy's welfare is unimportant
unless he happens to be an ath
letic star, and even so, his wel
fare is secondary to the honor
and glory of the team, school or
coach. '
