Registration Urged
M That Residents
Can Vote May 18
With the deadline for voter
registration only two week
away, the leaders of the two po
litical parties in Jackson county
joined today in urging all resi
dents who are not registered to
vote to do so immediately.
; Mrs. Bereth Hopkins, chair
man of the county Republican
central committee, and Mrs.
Mary G. Kelly, chairman of the
Democratic committee, each
pointed out that there are a num
ber of residents who would be
eligible to vote except that they
are not registered.
Deadline Nearing
; The primary election falls on
May 16 this year, and the dead
line for registration is April 15,
two weeks from today.
, Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Hopkins
also suggested that it would be
helpful if employers would join
in encouraging voter registration
and would give their employees
time off to register, if necessary.
At the same time, William Mc
Allister, chairman of the Med
io rd Eisenhower for President
Committee, pointed out that
there are undoubtedly many
Eisenhower admirers who would
like to aid the general's candi
dacy by voting for him. . They
will have to be registered Repub
licans to do so, he said.
And Mrs. Kelly was equally
emphatic in pointing out that
both Sen. Estes Kefauver and
Gov. Adlai Stevenson will be on
the primary election Democratic
ballot.
Captains Named
Fire captains in the two Med
ford fire stations have been des
ignated as official voter regis
trars, it was reported by County
Clerk George Carter, and will be
able to accept registrations in the
evenings when other registrars
will be unavailable. Another
registrar, Col. Ben Stafford, will
have a downtown registration
desk at Barker's Men's store,
Carter said. - ,
Mrs. Hopnins, who has made
study of registration trends in
the county, estimated la3t week
that there are 8,000 or more po
tential voters in the county who
have failed to register as a mem
ber of either party.
She said that there are approx
imately 27,000 persons register
ed out of a population of about
57,000, leaving 30,000 unregis
tered. There are 16,500 youngs
ters between 4 and 19 listed in
the school census, about 1,000 be-

On Music Program
- Ashland The radio program
"Singing Time," produced for
elementary school pupils by
Southern Oregon college, will
feature the new number "Song
of Hawaii" tomorrow, according
to Helene M. Robinson, assist
ant professor of music. The pro
gram is aired every Wednesday
at 1:30 p.m..over radio station
KWIN.
George Kenuna, a native Ha
waiian, will present the new
number and the program will
also include four songs pre
viously taught, Miss Robinson ex
plained. The radio program is presented
as part of the preparation for
the annual Jackson County Ele
mentary Music festival which
will be held at "the college May
7. By that date, a total of 14
different songs will have been
presented on the radio show,
Miss Robinson said.

Secret Papers Found;
April Fool Prankster
Believed Responsible
London (U.PJ Police re
ported Tuesday that atomic
papers marked "top secret"
were found in a suburban
street by two schoolboys, but a
spokesman for the supply min
istry said they apparently
were the work of an April
fool prankster.
The papers also were lab
elled "Harwell" the name of
Britain's principal nuclear re
search establishment.
County's Barbers
Study 5-Day Week
Jackson county barbers are
discussing the possibility of
adopting a five-day week, it was
reported here today by Cecil
McDonald, president of the Jack
son County Babers union
Barbers in - Klamath county
recently voted to adopt a five
day week beginning April 7.
McDonald said he believes a ma
jority of barbers here favor such
a plan.
Where barbershops have
adopted the shorter week, the
extra day off has been Monday,
allowing a long week-end. Mc
Donald said about 75 to 80 per
cent of Oregon shops are now
on this schedule. A majority of
those in California and many
in Washington are also said to
be on the short week.
Barbers favoring the change
say it would eliminate many
idle hours during week-days.
