SOC Evening Adult
Classes Set First
Meetings Tonight
Ashland Six evening courses
offered at Southern Oregon col
- lege this spring will hold their
first sessions tonight, according
to Mrs. Mabel W. Winston, regis
trar. Valley residents interested
in the work for college credit or
for enjoyment may register in
the classroom at the beginning of
the hour.
Mrs. Cay Hufman, instructor
in music, will again offer a
course in class lessons in vocal
music. The work is planned to
give students elementary in
traction in singing and an in
sight into group choral work.
The class will meet from 7:30 to
9:30 p.m. in Room 208, Churchill
hall.
, Weekly Practice
The college orchestra will con
tinue its weekly practice session
under the direction of Glenn T.
Matthews, assistant professor of
music. A number of Medford
townspeople are included in the
musical group and rehearsals are
under way to prepare for the reg
ular spring concert. Practice is
held in Churchill hall auditor
ium from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Dr. Bill Sampson, assistant
professor of education, will pre
sent school organization and law
in Room 112 of the library build
ing from 7 to 10 p.m. The class
will be of particular interest to
school board members and Par-
ent Teacher association groups
who want to have a better under
standing of the Oregon school
system.
Class in Novel
Contemporary novel will be
taught by Dr. Arthur Kreisman
associate professor of English
Works of the 20th century will
be criticized and their influence
on modern living studied. The
class will meet in Room 4 of the
library building from 7 to 10 p.m.
Two classes which have been
closed to additional registration
are ceramics and elementary
photography.
12 Flyers Escape
Air Force Crash
Albuquerque, N. M. (U.R)
An Air Force C-47 enroute to
Las Vegas, Nev., on a routine
flight crash-landed with its right
engine in flames here Saturday
after 12 passengers had bailed
out over Western New Mexico.
The engine fell out of the
stricken plane as it made an
emergency landing at Kirtland
Air Force base where it had
taken off a half hour eariler.
As the engine fell out, it also
knocked off the right landing
gear but neither the pilot, two
other crew members or one pas
senger who stuck with the plane
was hurt.
Ground crews were sent to
locate the 12 who parachuted to
safety.

center. The extra weight had
brought her to the minimum 120
pounds for donors. Red- Cross
workers were so amazed they
didn't get her name.

Failure of our cultural institu
tions generally, including the
home, the church and the school,
to help each individual achieve
true nobility of character, is a
shortcoming which contributes
in part, at least, to America's
current bewilderment and lack
of self-confidence in the face of
tragic international relation
ships. Senator Margaret Chase
Smith recently spoke an obvi
ous truth when she said: "A

Germans Still Buy 'Duds'

who fell for the biggest con
man of them all, Adolf Hitler,
still are buying goldbricks at
the rate of 500 a month.
This is a city where the
shrewd and unscrupulous can
make a killing fast.
Those Germans who were tak
en in by the Nazis still have a
lot of gullibility left and the
world's second oldest profession
is flourishing here.
Confidence men probably
never had it so good as they do
in post-war Berlin. Hard times
are looming for them, however.
The West Berlin police depart
ment has established a special
confidence squad to protect Ber
liners from swindlers and even
set up a bureau where those who

Prey on Women
The bureau will concentrate
on so-called "love swindlers."
One of the most lucrative ways
for a confidence man to earn a
fast mark is through the loneli
ness of Berlin's women. There
are 600,000 more women than
men and in the lower age group
women outnumber men four to
one.
One racket is for the con man
to pick up a girl on the street
and invite her to a dance. At
the dance he takes her coat and
deposits it in the cloak room.
He pockets the check. After a
few dances he takes a stroll with
the coat and doesn't come back.
Another type of Romeo meets
a girl at a movie or bar and
invites himself to the girl's flat
for the night. The next morning,
when the girl goes to work, Ro
meo is left alone in the home.
When he leaves he takes the
iiirniture with hm and every
thing else.
6ld Tricks Used
Then there are the ordinary
tricks. "Smugglers" sell store
owners large stocks 'of real
French cognac which turns out
to be colored water when it is
opened, although the bottles are
real.
"Electricians" or "carpenters"
call unexpectedly to repair a
stove of a lamp and take it
along with them when they
leave.

Spiritual Security-
Today, when an intellectual
and spiritual struggle is being
carried on all over the earth;
today when among great seg
ments of the world's population
the United States and her friends
have yet to win the Intellectual
and moral victory; today, in
these circumstances, it is impera
tive for higher education to con
tribute to what Senator Smith
called spiritual security.
College years provide young
men and women with the critic
ally needed time and facilities
for studying themselves in the
light of their basic motives.
abilities and ambitions, and for
formulating and carrying out,
each for himself, a program of
character building terms of an
ideal.
Atmosphere From Colleges
Colleges can provide the at
mosphere and the influences
which contribute to the forma
tion of character; they can pro
vide the classrooms and phys
ical tools for learning; teachers
and advisers and counsellors
can stand ready to help with
their skills; social and religious
organizations on campus and
the churches of the community
can be eager to make their con
tributions, and fellow students
can provide the educative force
often described as the "impact
of youthful mind on youthful
mind." All these may be avail
able. In combination, they can
be a powerful force in the whole
process of character develop
ment: but as in every other
phase of education, the princi
pal motivation and effort must
come from each individual stu
dent.
Stamp of Individuality
Character, simply defined, is
the stamp of individuality, im
pressed by nature, education or
habit; more especially, charac
ter is moral vigor and firmness,
especially as acquired through
self -discipline.-
The individual of character
has intellectual humility; no
matter how much he may know
about a tiny segment of human
knowledee. he realizes that
there is much more for him to
learn, and he appreciates the
validity of knowledge outside
his own specialized area of in
terest. In the words of Hamlet
to his friend, the man of char
acter says:
"There are more things in
heaven and earth, Horatio, than
are dreamt of in our philos
ophy."
The failure of many Amer
icans to achieve character traits
of this kind through education,
habit and self-discipline, seems
to me to be the basic cause of
many of our current difficulties
as a nation.
