High School Athletics Coach
Arrested for Sale of Liquor
Yakima (U.J9 Robert Liefer,
28, former Toppenish high
school teacher and athletic
coach, hai been charged with
buying beer for two of hli stu
dents. . The information filed in su
perior court charged Liefer with
unlawfully supplying liquor to
Roily Knutson. 18, and another
youth, 17, last Tuesday. His
bond was fixed at S1.000.
Assigned Thursday
. Liefer submitted his resigna
tion Thursday to Superintendent
A. K. Temperley.
Sheriff Bert Guns said Union
Gap police stopped a car Tues
day night in which Liefer and
the two youths were riding. Of
ficers said three bottles of beer
were found in the car, which
was driven by the younger boy.
The driver was placed In the
county detention home and
Liefer and Knutson were lodged
in the county Jail.
Lfefer coached Toppenish
high school basketball second
team and the junior high school
basketball team.

Extensive Remodeling Planned
On Tucker Properties, Newly
Purchased by Wealthy Hawaiian
Plans for extensive remodel
ing of the ranch properties of
the late Nion Tucker on the
upper Rogue river were learned
here last week. They will be un
dertaken by the new owner,
who purchased the properties
last month from the Tucker
estate.
George Murphy, owner and
operator of the largest automo
ble dealership in the Hawaiian
islands, obtained some 1,400
acres, including 3V& miles of
river frontage, in the transac
tions. The size of the considera
tion was not reported here, but
a Honolulu newspaper said It
exceeds $125,000.
Bar GM Ranch
The properties, know as the
Flounce Rock ranch during Mr.
Tucker's lifetime, will be known
as the Bar GM (for George Mur
phy) ranch, it was learned. They
include five homes, five barns,
and complete facilities for han
dling livestock. Some 18 head of
registered riding horses, includ
ing palominos, quarter horses,
morgans and a couple of albinos,
have been shipped to the ranch
by Murphy.

is a small herd of registered
Hereford cattle on the ranch, and
Murphy plans to expand the
number of pure bred cattle.
John Taylor, who has lived
in the area all his life, has
been named general superintend
ent of the ranch, and is now at
work with a sizable crew of
men, all employed directly from
this area.
Will Spend Time Here
It is understood that Murphy
will spend a good deal of time
on the ranch. He is president
of Murphy Motors, Ltd., and
Aloha Motors, both of Honolulu,
and also has dealerships in the
states. The two firms did a gross
business in excess of $16,000,000
in 1951.
Ray Coll Jr., a writer for the
Honolulu Advertiser, recently
did a story about Murphy. Part

February and March, while
farmers' prices fell for the third
straight month, government re
ports showed Saturday.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics
reported on the basis of an eight
city , survey that retail food
prices increased four-tenths of
one per cent during the 20 days
before March 15. The rise was
led by a 6.2 per cent increase in.
prices of fresh fruits and veget
ables. ,
The rise brought the food in
dex to 227.9 per cent of 1935-39
prices and 12.2 per cent above
prices just before the Korean
outbreak. J
Wholesale Prices Down
BLS reported, however, that
wholesale prices of all commodi
ties including fresh fruits and
vegetables declined one-tenth
of one per cent during the week
ended March 25. The wholesale
price index has dropped nearly
three per cent since January to
stand at 111.7 per cent of 1947

The Agriculture Department
reported meanwhile that farm
prices fell on March 15 to the
lowest point since December,
1950. Prices received by farm
ers for their products from mid
February to mid-March were
three-tenths of one per cent be

Don Lane To Attend
Travel Show in L. A.
Don Lane, secretary and man
ager of the Jackson County
Chamber of Commerce, left Sat
urday for Los Angeles where
he will attend the Los Angeles
Sports and Travel show at the
Pan-Pacific auditorium there. He
is representing the Pacific North
west Travel association, of which
the chamber is a member.
The Los Angeles show is one
of seven in which the chamber
participates through the PNTA,
and this is the third year that
Lane has represented Oregon
at the show. Three other men
from the 11 Pacific northwest
states and Alberta, Canada, will
also attend.
Lane is taking some 20,000
pieces of literature about the
Rogue valley to the event, and
will also call on newspapers and
chambers of commerce en route
south. Among other activities,
he will call on television pro
ducers regarding the showing of
Oregon films on TV networks.
He will be gone about three ,
weeks.

Murphy arrived In Honolulu

Valley Show Place
The Flounce Rock ranch has
long been one of the Rogue
valley's show places. Mr. Tucker
was for many years associated
with the San Francisco Chroni
cle, which was founded by the
father of Mrs. Tucker.
The Tuckers were hosts to
famous people from all over the
world on frequent occasions, and
the lodge at "Rogue's Roost"
was a familiar spot to many val
ley residents who also visited
there. It was not included in the
sale. Pure bred cattle raising
was also an avocation in which
the Tuckers were interested.
The sale of the property was
handled here by the T. J. Hight
realty office in cooperation with
Earl Tumy, an administrator of
the Tucker estate.
