Key Open Invitation To Stealing of Auto

switch is an open invitation for
loss of your car and a police
record for teen-aged boys and
girls.
Roy C. Nelms, U. S. probation
officer, said "kids who wouldn't
steal a pencil" often find the
temptation of a key in the igni
tion switch too great to resist.
He said more youths than ever
before are ending up behind bars
with stiff federal sentences for
violation of the Dyer act by
transporting a stolen car across
state lines.
Nelms, whose job it is to fur
nish federal court with a detailed
past history of each person
brought in on a criminal charge,
listed sex and envy as the major
cause of teen-age violators.

Kagner couldn't figure out why
a 20-acre field of his corn pro
duced pint-sized ears while other
fields, planted with the same
type of seed, were normal.
Crop experts made a scienti
fic check. They found the ans
wer. University of Nebraska ex
perts came up with this solu
tion: The poor corn was planted on
ground which had been in al
falfa the year before and the
alfalfa probably drained the sub
soil of much moisture. The corn
failed to get enough water at
the crucial time when ears were
developing
meaning only to date a girl
whose other boy friends ro
manced her in a car, he said.
Eventually the youth will cross
a state line in the car.
Boys and girls sentenced here
for violation of the Dyer act
commonly are given three year
terms. Some 'get the maximum
penalty five years.
The veteran law enforcement
officer said the best way to com
bat the growing wave of teen
aged car thefts is for every indi
vidual to remove his car keys
when he gets out of the car, re
gardless of how long he plans to
be gone.

ment with a swimming pool, and
whizzes around the plaster city
in a low slung foreign con
vertible. But when she first invaded
New York from Three Rivers,
Quebec, she was too frightened
to venture out of the station
for 14 days.
Thus her first American
"apartment" featured several
restaurants, shops, ticket offices,
ladies' rooms, numerous trains
and a few million uninvited
"guests."
"I slept in the ladies' room,"
she explained. "It really was
very nice. I could take a shower
there for 50 cents, too."
Enjoyed Watching Train
"There was so much to do. I
had a nice time watching the
people go to the trains. It was
paradise. What more could I
ask?"
She said, "I wasn't very happy,
though. I cried a lot."
Suzanne had been secluded in
a convent in Quebec. At 16 she
decided to see the world. Her
parents objected. So she sold
her fur coat and ran away with
a train ticket and $63 to be a

New Yorkers she wore a navy
blue jumper and white blouse
"like a schoolgirl." Her blonde
hair fell to her waist
r "I was terrified,' she sighed.
Afraid of Strangers
"I could speak hardly any Eng
lish. I was afraid to speak to
strangers to ask where to go. I
walked out of the station and
saw those two-decker buses and
buildings so high and cars
whizzing by. I was afraid to cross
the street.
"I ran back into the station
and didn't leave for two weeks."
One day Suzanne was eating
in her "dining room" along with
246 other restaurant customers
when a fashion model noticed
her struggling with the want ads
and a French-English dictionary.
The model, who spoke French,
got Suzanne a modeling job and
a room in a women's hotel
A movie agent spotted her pic
ture on a magazine cover. After
two years in Paris movies,
Suzanne now 22, was signed by
Paramount as a grade A foreign
actress.
"I haven't been in Grand Cen
tral since," she said. "I take
planes now."
World cotton production for
1951-52 is estimated at about
34,500,000 bales, about 24 per
cent higher than the previous
year.

veterinarian and educator says
the modern farmer doesn't have
to shoot a horse if it breaks a
leg.
"Many leg fractures can be

of the surgery department at
Ohio State University's college of
veterinary medicine, said.

After 18 years, Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae are really married.
Al Capp, the cartoonist, tells why:
. "It was wonderful while it lasted; and I had no reason for
marrying Abner off to Daisy Mae. But then something happened
that threatens to shackle me and my kind of comic strip. It is
what I call the gradual loss of our fifth freedom ... the freedom
to laugh at each other.
. I created labor-hating labor leaders, money-foolish finan
ciers, and Senator Jack S.-CGood old Jack S.') Phogbound . . .
I reveled in the freedom to laugh at America. But now America
has changed . . .! Now there are things about America we can't kid.
"I realized it first when four years ago I created the Shmoo
. . . (and) the Kigmy ... I was astounded to find it had become
unpopular to laugh at any fellow Americans ... - I
"So that was when I decided to go back to fairy tales until the
atmosphere is gone. That is the real reason why Li'l Abner mar
ried Daisy Mae . . . After a decade and a half of using my char
acters as merely reasons to swing my searchlight on America, I
began all over again to examine them, as people ... I became re
acquainted with Li'l Abner as a human being, with Daisy Mae as
an agonizingly frustrated girl. I began to wonder myself what
it would be like if they were ever married. The more 1 thought
about it, the more complicated and disastrous and, therefore, irre
sistible the idea became ....
" ... They are married all right. But if you think the future is
serene for them, you're ('Haw! Hawl') living in a fool's paradise.
