a work stoppage at the Rockford
Consolidated Newspapers, Inc.,
has offered full strike benefits
to members of other unions em
ployed by the company If they
do not cross the ITU picket line.
An ITU spokesman said such
an offer never had been made
before in labor disputes,
70 Involved in Stoppage
About 70 ITU members are
involved in the work stoppage,
. which began last Monday. The

papers involved, the Morning
Star and Register-Republic said
the stoppage was a strike. The
ITU said its members bad been
locked out.
Both newspapers continued to
publish without interruption.
Some members of the American
Newspaper Guild refused to
cross the ITU picket line, but
others reported for work.
A management - spokesman
said that some guild members
worked Saturday and that a 48
page Sunday newspaper would
be published.
The work stoppage began
after failure to reach agreement
on a clause in a new contract.
The disputed clause would pro
vide that teletypesetter tape
could be received by the papers
only if produced by members of
the Commercial Telegraphers'
Union, or a subordinate union of
the ITU.
THIEVES COMPETE
Spokane, Wash. U.R) Police
reported that burglars who
broke into vending machines at
a trucking firm didn't get a
thing. Burglars had emptied the
machines two nights earlier.

Toby Edward Klmmey has bMn namad
Madford's Easter Soal child for 1952. Toby,
four-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis E.
Kimmay. 630 Crater Lake avanua. suffers from
cerebral palsy and is a patient at the Eugene
hospital school where ha is being taught to
walk with special equipment. Toby and other
crippled children and adults of the state are
aided with funds from the annual Easter Seal
sale of the Oregon Society for Crippled Children
and Adults. la addition to the sale, the Jack
son county chapter is giving a dance at Rogue
Valley Country club April 7. with proceeds to
be added to the drive funds, and Epsilon Sigma
Alpha sorority has planned a benefit style show
and tea April 2 at 2 p. m. in the Pioneer room
of the Jackson hoteL
Oregon Society Announces
Easter Seal Child for 1952
Toby Edward Kimmey, 630 Crater Lake avenue, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Francis E. Kimmey, has been named Medford's Easter
seal child for 1952.
Toby, who is four going on
five, was named because he is
typical of children helped by the
children's school at Eugene,
which is financed by the Oregon
Society for Crippled Children
and Adults, Inc., through tae
sale of Easter seals.

When Toby was 1V4 years old,
he couldn't sit up, much less
toddle. His parents were finally
advised by a Jackson county
public health nurse to take him
to Eugene for diagnosis and
treatment There his trouble
was found to be cerebral palsy
and his application for entry to
the school was accepted. Toby
entered the school in September,
1951.
Since then, his father reports
that Toby is starting to crawl,
and is practicing walking with
the aid of steel braces and bars.
His father pointed out that Toby
is progressing under the inten
sive therapeutic care much more
rapidly than was possible at
home.
Mr. Kimmey had built an en
closed play yard for Toby and
a tricycle with shoes attached
to the peddles, so Toby could
have the benefit of the recipro
cal exercise of tricycling. How
ever, even this sort of special
ized equipment cannot take the
place of the trained personnel
at the children'! school.
About two years of training
will be necessary. Mr. Kimmer
added, before Toby will be able
to get around by himself. But
thats a large step forward, he
was quick to point out
The sale of Easter seal benefit-
dance- tickets is Mr. Kim
meys main project at this time.
He stressed the benefits Toby
was receiving and hoped that
everyone in Jackson county
could attend the dance April 7
at the Rogue Valley Country
club from 9 p.m. to 12 p.m.

Phil Sheridan has filed man
slaughter charges against 45-year-old
Leo Etienne of Everett
Etienne is charged in the hunt
ing death of 49-year-old Olaf
Pearson of Arlington, Wash.,
last October. Etienne said at the
inquest into the death that he
shot at what he thought was a
deer.
Pearson was struck In the
thigh by a bullet and died later
in the Arlington hospital.

Hourly Wage Boosts

Empire will receive immediate
wage boosts of nine-cents-an-hour,
the Wage Stabilization
Board reported Saturday.
Permission to pay the increas

was granted by the WSB's con

effective as of last week.
