Mrs. Melvin E. Bingham first ar
rived In this country, her hus
band, Sgt. Bingham had a lot of
trouble explaining why there
were so many unused 'Vide open
spaces." T
Tupelo's first Japanese- war
bride, the former Miss Yoshiko
Okita of Moji, Japan, came from
country where every available
Inch of space is put to some use.
; "I thought the best way to
show Pee wee (the sergeant's pet
same for his wife) the country
when we arrived in Seattle was
to drive to Mississippi in a round
about way," Sgt. Bingham said.
I finally told her that much of
the western land is unfit for any
thing and so it is unoccupied."
. The sergeant met his bride
while she was working in a snack
bar in. Kobe. They married last
spring ' soon after the ban on
marriage to Japanese women was
lifted by Gen. Douglas Mac Ar
thur. There is a little Bingham,
too. their son Charles..
The two are at present living
in the home of Bingham's sister,
Mrs. Lester Swindle. They will
leave next month when Sgt.
.Bingham goes to his new post at
Ft. Jackson, S. C.
It is the first visit Bingham
has paid to his home town in five
years. Mrs. Bingham said she
"loves America" and her new
found friends haven't "given her
time to get homesick" except
maybe for Japanese cooking.
"American food is so rich," she
aid. "The cooking is the only
thing I miss."
Bingham said his family has
taken Pee Wee to their hearts.
"They are all surprised at her
English," he said.
Mrs. Bingham, who was taught
by a Britisher, has very little ac
cent. "But it's all Japanese when she
gets mad at me," the sergeant
grinned.
Heavy water, which makes up
about one part in 5,000 of or
dinary water, contains heavy hy
drogen rather than the usual
kind.
Smelt Run Disappears ;

Kelso (U.R) The smelt run
has disappeared from the Cow
litz river in southern Washing
ton but commercial . fishermen
Thursday were successful in dip-
netting some of the fish in the
Kalama river.
No smelt have appeared yet in
the Lewis and Sandy rivers.
A week-end closure is in ef
fect until 8 p.m. Saturday in
Washington tributaries of the Columbia.

J. Raver, Bonneville power ad
ministrator, Friday urged con
struction of Hells Canyon dam
on the Idaho-Oregon border as a
project "any soundly managed
American business concern
would undertake.
Raver, chief of the govern
ment's power distributing agen
cy in the racmc wortnwest
backed the controversial project
in a statement filed with a House
interior subcommittee. The sub
committee is considering a bill
to authorize the $356,000,000
dam.
Opponents Heard Saturday
Witnesses favoring the project
were to complete their testimony
Friday, and opponents will be
heard beginning Saturday.
Only isolated power and wa
ter projects have been built in
the nation in the past. Raver
said, and have captured only
small part of the usefulness of a
river." Hells Canyon is the next
step, he argued, in an "intercon
nected" system which will give
"multinlied" benefits in the Co
lumbia basin.
If a business concern had a re
source similar to the Snake and
Columbia ; rivers, he said, it
would be "remiss" if it didn't
go ahead with Hells Canyon.
Would Help Industry
The "low cost power" the
project will produce, he contend
ed, would help the phosphate in
dustry in southern Idaho and
would satisfy a "rapidly increas
ing" demand for electricity for
irrigation pumping in the same
area.
Idaho s senators and repre
sentatives oppose the project.
One of their objections, is that it
would slow down irrigation and
other development in Idaho.
William A. Dittmer, power
manager of the BPA said power
from the dam would be market
ed at a rate that would promote
production of fertilizer from
phosphate. Idaho has nearly half
of the nation's rock phosphates,
he said but power rates so far
have allowed production only of
chemically-usable phosphates.
Dittmer also, submitted a let
ter giving' details of an offer to
sell power from Hells Canyon
project to the Idaho Power com
pany. The letter said the terms
were similar to those accepted
by the Montana Power company
for Hungry Horse project power
The Idaho company has an ap
plication for a smaller power
dam at the Hells Canyon site
pending before the Federal Pow
er commission. .
Secretary of Interior Oscar L.
Chapman told the subcommit
tee late Thursday he did not
think any settlement of the con
troversy with Idaho Power was
possible. Under questioning by
Rep. Samuel W. Yorty, D.-Calif.,

Chicago (U.R) More than 50
per cent of the jewels lost, or
stolen so far this year were un
derinsured, an insurance com
pany survey says.
"Too many people lost money
replacing missing jewels," said
John A. Arnold, vice president
of National Retailers Mutual
Insurance Co. "Their insurance
paid only a portion of the re
placement cost."
The hardest hit was the group
that bought jewelry, more than
three years ago, he said.-
He cited the example of a man
who bought a diamond ring in
1941 for $350 and Insured it for
that amount. When the ring was
lost last summer, the man learn
ed it would cost him $1,200 to
duplicate it today.
