Degree of Honor
Supper, Meeting
Held Tuesday Night
The Degree of Honor ' dime
aupper" held Tuesday evening at
Pythian hall attracted a large
crowd, the committee in charge
reports. Under the supervision
of Mrs. Al Boswell. the long line
of guests were served cafeteria
style by lodge members wearing
waitress costumes. Tables were
decorated with green laurel
sprays and yellow daffodils.
All guests were invited to at
tend an open lodge session at
8 p.m. and to participate in the
regular featured "sunbeam
march" played by Lewis Parker,
guest pianist, substituting for
Bob Hillyer.
Mrs. Violet Hyde, Albany, dis
trict organizer, who is also jun
ior past state president, was wel
comed and presented with a cor
sage by Mrs. Boswell.
After a brief meeting Miss
Adabee Seiler, program director,
guided the party into commu
nity singing by conducting a
series of old familiar rounds ac
companied at the piano by Mr
Parker. Featuring slapstick comedy in
a song and dance duet, Mrs.
Howard Stoll and Bob Hillyer
highlighted the evening with
acrobatic antics and comical
make-up and attire.
Miss Ellen Johnson, .Ashland,
and Howard Stoll played two
violin duets assisted by Mr. Par
ker at the piano. Mrs. .John
Hubler sang two solos, and a
monologue was given by Mrs.
Mayme Seller.
The Grants Pass drill team
entertained with the drill fig
ures to be featured at the state
convention in Portland April
28-29.
Members of the Past Presi
dents club participated in a si
lent movie skit called "The Re
jected Lover." Garbed in out
moded costumes, they moved in
accord with the script which
was sung by Mrs. Richard Den
man and Miss Seiler who ac
companied on the banjo. Par
ticipating were Mrs. Morris
Johnsburg and Mrs. Harold El
liott, who characterized the vil
lian and the father, respectively;
Mrs. Irl Groves, the vampire;
Mrs. Al Bradshaw, the lover;
Mrs. Matilda Dietrich, the moth
er; Mrs. Seiler, the preacher and
Mrs. Frank Dufek, the maiden.
Mrs. Clyde Hillyer, vice-president,
announced that the lodge
would sponsor a public dance in
the IOOF hall Saturday evening,
April 19, Music will be by Schu
chards orchestra with dancing
from 9 to 12 o'clock.
Golden Wedding
To Be Observed
Ashalnd Mr. and Mrs. B. L.
Powell, 196 Nutley street, Ash
land, will celebrate their 50th
wedding anniversary Sunday,
March 30. A reception in their
honor will be held in the social
room of the Ashland Methodist
church from three to five o'clock
in the afternoon, and the family
states that all friends in the val
ley are invited to call during
those hours.
The Powells have lived in
Ashland for the past 40 years.

"Y" World Service;
Program Explained
Proceeds from the YMCA
sponsored square dance and
smorgasbord, to be given Sat
urday, March 29, will go to
wards the goal of $500 which
the local "Y" has set as its con
tribution for the world service
fund.
Tri-Hi-Y clubs of the Medford
"Y" have sold books, shined
shoes and given dances to raise
$70 of the needed sum.
In explanation of YMCA
World Service, it is stated that
the YMCA of the United States
and Canada help the people of
other countries to meet basic
needs for health, education, eco
nomic welfare and spiritual
growth. The total goal for 1952
is $1,771,133 and the help will
be administered through three
channels, the basic program of
YMCA World Service, the
YMCA World committee, and
the special needs program of
World Service.
The "Y" states that the peo
ple of 28 countries are now be
ing aided through the World
Service program. The work of
the asociation is extended . to
crucial areas, such as Jerusa
lem, buildings are restored in
countries devastated by war and
such services as literacy cam
paigns, establishment of com
munity centers, education class
es, public health drives and es
tablishment of boys' clubs are
carried on.
Mpthersingers Plan
Rehearsal Monday
All mothersingers choruses of
the county are asked to attend
a meeting at Medford Junior
High school Monday, March 31,
at 4 p.m. in Room 36. Mrs. Otto
Frohnmayer asks that each
group be prepared to sing one
number, and then a mass rehear
sal will be held in preparation
for singing at a meeting of the
Jackson County Council of Par
ents and Teachers. The council
meeting is to be held Wednesday.
April 2, in Rogue River.
Junior High Mothersingers'
chorus will rehearse Tuesday,
April 1, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. ac
cording to an announcement by
Ray Lewis, director. The chorus
will meet in Room 36. The newly
organized chorus, made up of
mothers of students in senior
and junior high school, and their
friends, already has a number of
singing engagements.

Women's Conference Opens
On Ashland Campus Today
Young women from 30 south
ern Oregon and northern Cali-J
fornia high schools began arriv
ing on the Southern Oregon col
lege campus today to take part
in the Ashland Conference for
Young Women, according to Mrs.
E. B. Collins, president of the
Medford branch, American Asso
ciation of University Women.
Vanguard of more than 60
AAUW consultants from branches
at Ashland, Medford, Grants
Pass, Coos Bay, Klamath Falls
and Lakeview also arrived.
More than 300 girls, their moth
ers, high school advisers, and
AAUW leaders are expected to
attend the Saturday . session,
Mrs. Collins said.
Delegates will register at the
new library building early in the
morning and then will meet in
Churchill hall auditorium to
hear conference plans. Mrs. C.
D. Winston, Ashland, northwest
regional AAUW vice-president
and conference chairman, will
welcome delegates. Mrs. Elmo
N. Stevenson, president of the
host Ashland AAUW branch will
extend greetings and Miss Doro
thy Winters, Portland, president
of Sigma Epsilon Pi sorority at
the college, will represent SOC
hostesses.
Mrs. Justin Smith, Medford,
will give the keynote address of
the conference as the representa
tive of the six sponsoring
branches and Dr. Elmo N. Ste

for the vocational guidance sec
tion. Instructions for group dis
cussions will be presented by
Miss Charleen Kring, Ashland,
AAUW branch conference ad
ministrative organizer.
The young women and AAUW
consultants will adjourn .to 11
individual group meetings to
which delegates have already
been assigned. Four sections will
discuss personal habits; two will
review the place of the young
woman in the home; three
groups will talk about employ
ment problems; and two more
will discuss moral and spiritual
standards.
Girls will be guests at a lunch
eon to be served at Susanne
Homes hall and will be enter
tained with a style show and mu
sical numbers by the Associated
Women Students. Consultants
and mothers will have a special
luncheon at the Ashland Elks
club.
The early afternoon will be
devoted to social functions at
which girls may become better
acquainted with one another and
the conference will reconvene in
Churchill hall at 3 o'clock for a
review of the morning discus
sion sessions. Sigma Tau speech
sorority members who will sum
marize findings of the four main
sections will be Zelma Stone,
Ashland, Joan Burke and Marlys
Franklin, Medford; and Gloria
Robinette, San Jose.
Delegates will enjoy a final
gathering in Memorial Court
where the Ashland AAUW
branch will serve refreshments.

meeting cf Crater high school
Parent-Teacher association held
in the cafetorium of the high
school March 24.
Parents, teachers and students
all took part in the discussion.
Students taking part were Shir
ley Edison and Neil Richardson.

er at Crater high school acted
as moderator. Group singing
was led by Mrs. Lloyd Morris
and Miss Patty Perry played a
piano solo.
Officers were elected for the
coming year. They are president,
Carl Hover; first vice-president,
Herbert Elliott; second vice-president,
Mrs. L. C. Parker; secre
tary, Mrs. C. B. Cordy; treasur
er, Mrs. Frances Willett
Ben Day gave a summary of
the meeting held recently in
Medford, sponsored jointly by
the PTA and Oregon Education
association and dealing mainly
with school finances. Carl Hover,
chairman of the juvenile wel
fare committee, gave a report.
Miss Leach Home
Miss . Beverly Leach has re
turned to her home in Medford
after serving the past 18 months
in the WAVES as a hospitalman.
Miss Leach was assigned to the
Sand Point Naval station hos
pital, near Seattle.
This is the second tour of
duty for Miss Leach, who served
two years in the WAVES during
World War II.
Miss Leach, a daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Edward Leach, route 2,
will take a vacation for the next
few weeks and then plans to
return to her work as a labora
tory technician.
