Two Hospitals

' Two hospitals in Africa pro
vide the incentive for mission
ary gifts of Seventh-day Advent-
Jsts around the world, with a
goal of $275,000 for one day's
offerings, according to C. A.
Jones, Medford Sabbath School
superintendent, who has inform
ed members of the needs of that
field.
One hospital will be in Jengre,
Nigeria, where 14,000 out-patients
were treated last year in
a small, meagerly equipped clin
ic. The powerful Moslem Emir of
Zaria has asked to be informed
of the opening date so that he
can be present, 160 miles from
his home.
Dispensaries Wanted
Dr. J. A. Hyde, who with his
wife and four African medical
orderlies has been carrying on
the work thus far has written
that the greatest hardship is the
inability to answer calls of chiefs
who plead for dispensaries and
schools.
The other hospital will re
place a medical center in Dessie,
Ethiopia, which was confiscated
during the Italian invasion. The
empress and crown prince have
provided a building and have in
vited the Adventist mission to
staff and. equip a good medical
unit for their people. The Gov
ernor General of Arussi, in ask
ing for a dispensary in his prov
ince, said that mission work
would do more for his people
than soldiers and police.
Methodists Will
Broadcast Service
First Methodist church will
broadcast over KYJC Sunday,
March 30 from 11 a.m. to noon.
The pastor, the Rev. Meredith
Groves, will preach on "New
Life in Christ's Church."
Music will include "Carol Of
The Trees" by the Chancel choir
and a solo, "The Cross," by Mrs.
Archie Pierce. Dr. J. S. Heather
ington also will sing.
At the 7:30 p.m. service the
Medford senior high school cho
rus will present a concert under
direction of Miss Loraine Veidt.
The choir will sing "For the
Blessings of Our Days," an old
Welsh hymn; "Holy Lord God,"

College Musicians
On Phoenix Program
Phoenix Southern Oregon
college music department will
present an hour program of in

starting at 7:30 p. m. this Sun
day at Phoenix Presbyterian
church.
All residents of the commu
nity are invited. There will be
no charge for admission but a
free-will offering will be taken.
Committeemen preparing for
the program stated that they an
ticipate a large attendance.

Presbyterian Leader To Speak
National Head
Of Presbyterians
Will Talk Here
Dr. Harrison Ray Anderson,
moderator of the General As
sembly of the Presbyterian
Church in the United States, will
speak on "I Went Into the Sanc
tuary," at the 11 a.m. service
in the local First Presbyterian
church on Sunday, March 30.
Dr. Anderson has come to Med
ford for the dedication of the
new church school unit of the
local church. It will occur at
10:15 a.m. Sunday.
Chicago Pastor
As moderator of the general
assembly, Dr. Anderson holds
the highest honorary office in
the nation in the Presbyterian
church. He has been pastor of
Fourth Presbyterian church,
Chicago, since 1930. It has 3000
members and is near the center
of the city on Michigan avenue.
Dr. Anderson was a chaplain
in the first World War, serving
with the 103rd Division in
France. He is a Mason, and a
member of Rotary international.
He is a gifted speaker and the
public will be welcome to hear
him at this time, church officials
said.
School Finance Class
Offered Spring Term
Ashland School finance, one
of the four courses needed for
elementary principal credentials,
will be offered at Southern Ore
gon college during the spring
term, it was announced today by
Mrs. Mabel W. Winston, regis
trar. The first class wil convene
tomorrow at 9 a.m.
The course will be taught by
Dr. Bill Sampson, assistant pro
fessor of education. It is a grad
uate course in the new program
recently approved for instruc
tion at the three colleges of edu
cation. - '
The complete series will be
offered during the summer ses
sion, including elementary
school supervision, administra
tion and curriculum.
Portland Restaurants
Under New OPS Order
Portland U.PJ About 5,500
restaurants in the Portland dis
trict of the Office of Price Sta
bilization will be affected by a
new OPS order imposing flexi
ble price ceilings on restaurants
and drinking places.
District Director Carl C.
Donaugh said no general change
in overall restaurant prices is
expected. His district includes
southwest Washington and all of
Oregon except Malheur county.
The order is effective April 7
and will fluctuate up or down to
conform to the government's
wholesale food price index.

There should be a law against
critics revealing the surprise end
ings of plays, films and novels.
There is a current film that has
a clever surprise angle. It is a
real punch in the picture. Yet I
read a criticism that revealed
that surprise. Guess I'll have to
start a bitter campaign against
this practice. I hadn't seen the
picture referred to and when I
did my enjoyment of it was less
ened by knowing about the sur
prise angle.

Commenting on the advice of
that man who said young fellows
should get into a business calling
for "equipping ships or women,"
a New Yorker says he took it.
He manufactures that article of
attire referred to as "gay de
ceivers" or "falsies." He says
over 5,000,000 pairs of "falsies"
were sold in the United States
last year including those used to
wear with bathing suits. He adds
that even though he is in the busi
ness he does not believe bachelor-
ettes should wear "falsies." That
so doing is a deception which is
unfair to prospective husbands.
A married woman, in featuring
sutfh attire, says he, "deceives
only the public."

dictions. How would you like to
have a horse handicapper who

sandwich." That is the slogan of
the lunch counter at Coultrap's
store in Tappan Lake. Ohio. The
lunch counter is only a small
part of the establishment It has
numerous departments. Even has
a barber shop where a haircut is
49 cents. The prices in all de
partments at Coultrap's are un
believably low, yet the outfit
had a 10 per cent net profit last
year. It claims to have served
1,000.000 customers.

ord for consecutive strike-outs by

people in making articles.
Mrs. Vera Thompson, Port
land, state home teacher for
adult blind under the Oregon
Commission for the Blind, said
today that the yarn is needed for
use by the blind in this area.
The yarn may be taken to the

Studio of Dance
Opening Sunday
Mrs. Cliff Aldrich today an
nounced the opening Sunday of
her new studio of dance located
on the Jacksonville highway
near Bybee corner. The studio,
in the loft of a converted dairy
bam, has amain studio and
reception room, a play yard
equipped with swings and sand
pile, kitchen, practice room, and
rest rooms.
Interior decoration and fur
nishings are in Chinese red and
chartreuse and the studio is
equipped with complete sound
system, air conditioning and
electric heating. The reception
room features a plate glass win
dow so that parents and visitors
may watch students during their
lessons.
Draperies in the main studio
are arranged on one wall for
background use in motion pic
ture photography of students and
another wall for use in still pho
tography. Both Mrs. Aldrich and
her husband are photographers.
A library of children's books
will be added soon, the owner
said. Some of the draperies used
are handwoven by the couple.
Located in the center of a
three-acre tract, the school also
has an outdoor area for summer
ballet classes.
The new studio will open at
2 p.m., Sunday, March 30, at the
new building. Students, their
parents and friends, and others
interested are invited.

boy who started saving
at the age of nine and now has
more than $2,000 toward a col
lege education finds it pays to get
up early and keep going.
Jerry L. Hassell was only nine
when he took over his mother's
milk deliveries so he could start
buying savings stamps.
Later he got an afternoon
paper, route and then added a
morning route.
Jerry would get up at 4:45
every morning for his first paper
deliveries and finish up late at

Tribute Paid
By Center Representative
Tribute was paid to the efforts
of workers in the Jackson county
blood collection program Thurs
day at a luncheon meeting at
the Medford hotel. Featured
speaker was Robert Jackson, rep
resenting the Portland blood col
lection center, central collecting
agency for this area.
Jackson pointed out the value
of the local blood collection pro
gram to Medford and other Jack
son county hospitals. The local
program is important m Jackson
county, not only in a saving of
money, but in making needed
blood readily available here, he
said.
Increasing Amounts
Increasing amounts of blood
collected by various local pro
grams are going to hospitals with
in the area, according to Jack
son. He stated that, at present,
about half of the blood collected
is being used within the area.
This amount should be cut to
one-third by increasing the total
amount collected, Jackson said.
The local campaigns for collec
tion of blood have brought out
6.2 donors for each 100 persons
in the Jackson county population,
compared with about 4.2 per cent
throughout the area, between
Fort Lewis, Wash., and Ashland,
which is served by the Portland
center, he stated.
Jackson said that, although the
collection rate is slightly below
that set as a goal by the Port
land center, it would probably be

Blood Workers

here if collection facilities could
be increased. These facilities are
provided by the Portland center.
Mrs. Leston Huntley of the
Jackson county unit, stated that
during 19 collection programs
conducted here since January,
1951, a total of approximately
3,600 pints of blood have been
collected. Local volunteer work
ers have donated an average of
600 hours of service for each
visit, she said.
During the meeting, new chair
men of various phases of the
Jackson county blood collection
program were introduced. They
included Mrs. Ward Hammond,
recruitment chairman,, and Mrs.
Don Hughes, Mrs., Emerson P.
Merrick, Mrs. Frank Cantrill and
Mrs. C. L. Pence.
Other guests at the meeting
were Col. Charles Stafford, head
of the Jackson county civil de
fense program; Mrs. Enid Ran
kin, of the local Red Cross or
ganization, and chairmen from
Ashland, Gold Hill, Rogue River,
Prospect, Union Creek and Camp
White.
