The oracle who presides over
this contumacious column must
hav heen nodding when he
pounded out
the piece titled
Nutritional De
ficiency and
Pyorrhea (Feb.
18) or maybe
overdue for a
conference o n
the bowling
green. In the
first paragraph
I said:
"The trouble
known as pyorrhea, in my
opinion, is not a specific dis
ease but a manifestation of
physical degeneration due to
nutritional deficiency."
Incidentally, 'young ones
there's a sentence to practice
your diction, construction, ety
mology, punctuation and even
your grammar (ouch) on.
Two or three games para
graphs further along in the same
piece I said:
"In my opinion" (anyway
my construction was better,
don't you think?) "chronic
rheumatiz or arthritis" (if you
prefer the more expensive
term) "is a manifestation of
physical degeneration due to
nutritional deficiency."
If at first you infer that my
needle stuck or the typographers
gummed things up you had bet
ter do some thinking before you
call attention to the obvious
blunder. Before I turn up my
toes you're going to learn, I
hope, that pyorrhea and chronic
rheumatiz (arthritis to you. Wise
acre) are not the half of it. I
have some more bad news for
you today, to-wit: . '
- In my opinion hardening of
the arteries (arteriosclerosis)
and most cases of chronic
heart disease are manifesta
tions of physical degeneration
due to nutritional deficiency.
I keep repeating physical de
generation lest lunkheads infer I

rheumatiz or cardio-vascular de
generation. As one of my most
valued assistants, N. Webster, de
scribes it in the Unabridged, de
generation is:

That's pretty good, but Sted-
man's Medical Dictionary gives
a better definition of degenera
tion:
A retrogressive pathological
change in cells or tissues in
consequence of which the func
tioning power is lost and the
living substance becomes con
verted into an inert mass.
Even Stedman seems a shade
too gloomy about it. He might
have said "in consequence of
which the functioning power is
impaired or weakened and may
be lost if the degeneration pro
cess is not retarded or reversed."
I'm not a therapeutic optimist
but I believe it is possible to re
tard or arrest the degeneration
in most instances that is, to
bring about regeneration and
restoration of function.

ESSENTIAL TO HAPPINESS?
One of the dreams of a young
couple is to have a home of their
own where they can be off. by
themselves, away from any pos
sible interference from family
or friends. But is this essential
to happiness? That is the ques
tion raised by the following let
ter from a disturbed and wor
ried mother:
(Q) "Our daughter of 18 U
going to marry an only child
of 23. Although she has paid
for nearly half the furniture,
she tells mo they are going to
live with his folks. She says
ho doesn't want to rent a place
as that is 'throwing away
money'. Ho hasn't one cent
saved although ho has worked
since ho was 15 and has nover
paid board. Together lhoy earn
enough to have a place of
their own but lhe says sho
wants to decide things for her
self. Is there anything we can
say to make her see she is
losing something she can nev
er gain back by not being
alone when first married?"

If I were in
your place, I would be far more
concerned about the fact that
this man is contemplating mar
riage without a cent in reserve
than I would be about their liv-
ing with his parents. After work
ing for eight years, and with no
board to pay, it seems strange
to me that he has nothing saved.
It seems even stranger that he
has the nerve to ask a girl to
marry him under such conditions.
So long as your daughter will
be living in the home of her
in-laws, you can feel secure
about her having a roof over
her head and food to eat. But
it is not a wise beginning fo
young people to start off their
marriage with empty pockets.
Your daughter may realize
the seriousness of having no nest
egg for emergencies and that
may be "why she has consented
to live with her in-laws. If her
attitude toward them is favor
able and they are willing to ac
cept her as a daughter, all should
go well
If. however, all does not go
well, it will be a difficult situa
tion for her. When a husband
feels that a home of his own is
"throwing money away" and
when he has nothing saved, the
wife is almost doomed to a life

happen?
If you asked the boys with the
slide rules, they'd tell you that
most auto accidents are caused,
not by faulty cars, but by faulty
drivers. Sure, the reckless drivers
have their share of smashup. But
it's the normally careful driver, who
gits careless only once in a whil;
who has most of the accidents.
Keep it in mind next time you
drive, won't you?
