marry again within five years.
The percentage of happy mar
riages is higher for second mar
riages than first marriages. Usu
ally a bachelorette can hardly

I saw Paris, which was in 1939,
the rate was thirty francs to the

could buy a good Havana cigar
for eighteen francs and get a
haircut for six francs. For ninety
francs you could get a good

that the old-timers of Ty's day

in- action. Christy Mathewson's
death was hastened by the effects
of a poison gas attack at the

At the Fair
Does the song "Meet Me in
St. Louis, Louis" bring you any
fond recollections? I mean, were
you at the fair there? If so, did
you hear John McCormack sing
at that time? He was one of the
singers in the Irish Village. So
was Lily Foley, the girl who be
came Mrs. John McCormack.
Lily was a Dublin girl, John was
from Athlone "where the river
Shannon flows." John proposed
to Lily in St. Louis. They were
married two years later. Their
marriage lasted thirty-nine years.
Grim Opening
Now on Broadway is a play
titled "The Shrike" which starts
off with its leading male charac
ter having taken 156 sleeping
pills in an effort to end his ex
istence. This is the most somber
opening of a hit play since Clyde
Fitch's "The Climbers" in which
Amelia Bingham starred. That
opened with a funeral scene.
"The Shrike' 'is a psychological
melodrama. I like my melo

From 'Sick' Wells
Seattle (U.R) A new method
of treating "sick" wells has been
developed which has increased
their water yield by as much as
300 per cent, delegates to the
spring meeting of the American
Society of Mechanical engineers
were told Wednesday.
Explosives Involved
The treatment involves the
use of "vibratory explosives," a
process which was explained by
Harvey Mylander, a water sup
ply analyst of South Pasadena,
Calif.
The wells are brought to life
by exploding sm 11 charges
spaced in the wall casing. The
charges are detonated at calcu
lated time intervals, thus pro
ducing a series of continuous
shock waves powerful enough to
dislodge obstructions which clog
the well perforations.
Method Safe To Use .
The vibratory method, My
lander said, provides thorough
cleaning and is safe to use on
old casing and well screens. Fur
thermore, he said, benefits ob
tained last longer than those
produced by conventional me
chanical and chemical methods.
He said that after the explo
sives are detonated, the well
is pumped free of residue, an
operation which seldom requires
more than three hours.
