MEN FROM MARS? U. S. engineers in asbestos suits move one
of the "old type" aircraft warning balloons away from the truce
conference site at Panmunjom, Korea. This type balloon contain
ing inflammable hydrogen is to be replaced by "sausage" shaped
balloons filled with safe helium. In the early days of the truce
talks, several engineers were burned when one of the hydrogen
filled balloons exploded.
Special Stamp Honors 4-H

largest farm youth organization
the 4-H clubs was accorded
high honor for its 50th anniver
sary this year.
A new postage stamp commem
orating the clubs was issued at
Springfield, O., where the idea
of farm youth doing something
with its head, heart, hands, and
health was born
The 4-H idea spread M(ith such
vigor that now there are about
90,000 clubs, with a membership
of more than 2,000,000 boys and
girls between 10 and 21. In a
half century the clubs have train
ed more than 15,000,000 Ameri
can youngsters. The organization
has been classed as "one of the
greatest character-building agen
cies in the United States
By act of Congress, 4-H youth
training is under the immediate
supervision of some 9,000 county
extension agents cooperatively
employed by the Department of
Agriculture, the state colleges of
agriculture and county govern
ments. Also 250,000 men and
women serve without pay in
volunteer guidance to the various
types of 4-H club activities.
Many Awards Given
A growing list of corporations
and individual donors are con
tributing to a carefully devel
oped system of awards ranging
from scholarships and breeding
stock to gold medals and cash
prizes. That has resulted in re
newed incentive for the young
people to take part in many and
varied projects and to display
their skills in competition with
each other at state fairs and 4-H
conventions.
The clubs program provides
opportunity to "learn to do by
doing, since each new member
chooses one or more projects for
"basic training." These projects
range from the best-known single
job, that of raising farm animals
for a profit, to other activities
such as raising a garden, cooking
and nutrition, forestry, soil con
servation and many others.
The soil conservation project,
for example, is a steady job for
the 4-H clubbers, its value fully
recognized in recent years.
Important Work Done
From almost every state come
reports of 4-H members who have
ditched, terraced, laid drain
pipes, seeded old fields to grass,
filled up gullies, and built ponds
and dams.
Character training is received
through demonstration and judg-ing-team
work, tours and hikes,
work in music appreciation and
dramatics, 4-H camps, and ex
hibits at community, county,
state and often interstate events.
Outside of their local interest,
the 4-H members have become
increasingly conscious of their
responsibility in sharing their
knowledge with the young peo
ple of other lands.
The result has been the Inter
national Farm Youth Exchange,
in which the youth of the United
States and other countries have
worked and shared ideas.
HONORED AT LONG LAST

Cuban government finally
caught up with history. Dr.
Charles J. Bondley has just re
ceived the government's award
for "special service rendered
during the Spanish-American
War of 1898." Dr. Bondley, who
served with the medical corps,
said he could recall no specific
event which warranted the ci
tation.
