Said Essential for Young People

director, takes up juvenile
crime.

We are conscious of many acts
of crime committed by ' young
people. One reason for this is
our highly efficient means of
communication. News travels at
at a fast pace. And the public
likes to hear about tne imie
crimes of other people. It makes
their own way of living seem
more righteous.
Moreover, our society has be
come more complex and prod
ucts more numerous. There are
many more ways for youth to
get into trouble.
More Chances Now
Youth a generation ago had
few things to destroy around an
isolated home.
Now, with things and people
underfoot at every turn, he has
many more chances at petty
crime.
A crime wave in youth must
have a cause, and it is easy to
point to some possible reasons.
The home, in my opinion, must
carry the major responsibility of
youth because it is the base of
our civilization. It is the best
place to obtain the three most
important elements of living
food, rest and shelter. It is the
one place that can provide a
little of all the elements pro
vided by the other agencies,
namely, schools, churches and

has reminded employers sub
ject to the factory inspection
law that they must pay their
yearly fees to the commission
before April 1 in order to escape
penalty payments.
Administration and enforce
ment of the factory - inspection
law was transferred from the
State Bureau of Labor to the
Industrial Accident commission
by the i951 legislature.
The industrial accident com
mission said all firms such as
factory, mill or workshop
where machinery is used, and
logging operations not covered
by the workmen's compensation
act are subject to the factory in
spection law fees.

proper attitude of school, church
and community.
Schools were started primar
ily to educate trig mind. The
minds brought along active little
bodies. That has caused much
concern. Schools have added ac
tivities until they have a very
complicated course of study.
New ways have been found to
impart knowledge and attitudes.
Vocational training has been
added. Guidance programs are
relatively new.
Schools are doing a pretty
good job for the money spent.

the various habits which tend to
cause petty crime.
Recreation Important
A community with home lov
ing parents, well-trained teach
ers, and friendly churches is
usually a good community. More
over, a community which goes
one step farther and provides
recreation for its people is a
still better community. People
have leisure time, some more
than others. Machines do things
today that required many hands
in the past. People like to be
active. Recreation in the home,
school and church is important
but not enough. Communities
should conduct recreational ac
tivities to make the program
complete.
Phoenix High School
Slates Musical Show
Phoenix "Off the Records,"
a musical variety show, will be
presented by the Phoenix high
school, Friday, March 28, at 8
p.m. in the high school gym.
It is being presented through
the combined efforts of the Mas
quers, the high school dramatics
club, and the music department.
"Off the Records" is rated as
something different in the way
of high school programs accord
ing to Gerald , Einarsson, music
instructor and director of the
play. "It will contain something
of interest to everyone attend
ing," he said.
Variety numbers will include
"Funny Bones" and his band,
chorus girl numbers, a Gay
Ninties'show, and the Cathedral
choir.
Glenn Aplin, dramatics in
structor, assisted in the production.
