the western zone of Germany.
Tells of Contrast
The sharp contrast in the liv
ing standards and freedom pos
sible to residents of the two
zones of Germany was described
by Barth, who said the gener
ous financial and economic aid
of the United States had enabled
western Germany to reconstruct
much of its productive plant.
He also described the growth
of democratic principles in west
ern Germany since the war.
Questioned as to whether Nazi
indoctrination still had an ef
fect on German young people,
he said that the complete col
lapse of the German army at
the end of the war, and the re
sultant disrepute of Nazi ideolo
gies, has largely done away with
any tendency toward national
istic socialism.
Studies Life Her
Barth, who is studying this
year at the University of Ore
gon at Eugene, explained how
he was awarded the scholarship
through the United States state
department after a series of ex
aminations. His task, in addition
to his studies is to observe Amer
ican community life, he said, in
the hope that he will be able to
interpret America to the Ger
mans when he returns.
Much of the discussion was
taken up with his war exper
iences, which were of interest
to the reserve Air Force men
who had been on the opposite
ride. He entered the 1st para
troop regiment of the Luftwaffe
at the age of 17, and spent the
winter of 1942-43 on the Russian
front at Orel, where he was
wounded. Later his regiment
was stationed in France while he
and other members were as
signed to specialists' schools.
Similar Experiences
Barth received training as a
fighter pilot, and his descrip
tion of some of his trials in be
coming a pilot drew sympathetic
laughter from the Air Force
men who, it appeared, had been
through very similar experiences.
Later in 1943 his regiment
was assigned to Italy, and
jumped during the fighting after
the invasion of Sicily by Ameri
can troops. He fought all along
the Italian peninsula during the
German retreat, and was taken
prisoner two days after the
armistice there. He spent two
years in American and British
prisoner of war camps on Malta
and in Egypt
The young journalist is spend
ing this week in Medford as a
guest member - of the staff of
The Mail Tribune. He will re
turn to the university this week
end, and is due to return to Ger
many in August or September,
where he will resume his duties
as a junior editor of the Rheinis
che Post.
Mrs. Roosevelt Stops
In Manila on World Tour
Manila (U.PJ Mrs. Eleanor
Roosevelt arrived in Manila by
air from Jakarta Thursday for a
one-day stop on her world tour.
She was met by Ambassador
and Mrs. Raymond Spruance,
Foreign Secretary Joaquin Eliz
alde, and representatives of
women's organizations. She will
leave for the United States Friday.

Ladies of the Masse Lodge

evening. There was a large
crowd present. During the inter
mission refreshments were

Marvin R. Kahn, chief of spec
ial services, will be away from
his office for two weeks on an
nual leave. He and Mrs. Kahn
are visiting friends and relatives
in Nevada and California.
Bob Dillard, field secretary
for the American Legion, is vis
iting at the station. Bob comes
here about everv three months.
He is a native Oregonian and for
years lived at Coos Bay. Diuara

We are saddened by the death
of our good friend Olney Dart
who passed away at the Veter
ans hospital in Portland recent
ly. We were associated with
Olney on the staff of the Domi
news and were well acquainted
otherwise. Dart had many
friends among the men and he
will be greatly missed. He was a
veteran of World War L

riety show Wednesday evening.
These shows are always popular
with the boys and a good crowd
attended.
Walter Helium has been trans
ferred to the VA hospital at
Roseburg for some specialized
treatment While he is away his
place as printer of the Dominews

George Mitchell. Helium is not
expected to be away from Camp
White for more than three
months.
Miss Aimabelle Houchen will
be away Friday of this week at
tending a counterfeit clinic to be
held in Portland. Her office in
the finance department will be
closed for that day.
Many of the men at this sta
tion will remember Nurse Nellie
Bauldry at the Roseburg hospi
tal. Miss Bauldry is to be retired
this year. This gracious lady Is
a veteran of the nursing service
during the first war. She went to
Russia prior to World War I and
helped set up a hospital for the
victims of the Russian revolu
tion During her many years with
the veterans administration Miss
Bauldry made thousands of
friends. Our best wishes go with
her wherever she goes.
Airmen Protest End
Of Weather Station
Portland (U.R) Airmen in
the Portland area Thursday pro
tested the government's an
nounced closure of its weather
bureau station at Stevenson,
Wash., as a "serious blow" to
pilots of light planes.
Henry Troh, operator of a
small airport east of the city,
said Stevenson was the "only
weather eye" inside the Colum
bia gorge and said most pilots
depend on its reports for flights
through the gorge, a main route
in eastern Oregon and Wash
ington. The weather bureau said the
Stevenson station would be clos
ed next Tuesday for lack of
funds, but said reporting points
will still be maintained at Trout
dale and The Dalles, Ore.
Klamath Youth Held
As Director of Gang

19-year-old youth was held here
Thursday on charges of receiv
ing and concealing stolen prop
erty which he allegedly acquired
while directing activities of a
young gang of burglars.
Police said the arrest of Jerry
Oscar Madden and the detention
of more than 10 younger boys
cleared up at least a dozen bur
glaries, car-prowlings and shop
lifting cases in the Klamath Falls
area.
The other boys, ranging in age
from 10 to 17, claimed they stole,
turned the property over to Mad
den, but received no profit for
their efforts.
