Union Defendant
In Damage Suit

rice Turnbull have filed suit, in
Superior Court for damages to
talling $260,120.83 against Lo
cal 760 of the International
Brotherhood of' Teamsters.
Chauffeurs, Stablemen and
Helpers of America. .
The suit ' was the outgrowth
of a traffic collision between an
automobile driven by Hembree
and one operated by Lowell
Hurst, a business agent of the
union, January . 3. Hurst wa.
killed in the accident. -
Damages were asked by the
plaintiffs for injuries received,
medical and hospital expenses
and loss of future earnings as a
result of the injuries.
The suit asked judgments to
taling $235,051.83 for Mr. and
Mrs. Hembree and $25,069 for
Turnbull, a passenger in the
Hembree car.
The plaintiffs alleged that the
crash was caused by the negli
gent driving of Hurst.

doing cancer research at the
University of California at Los
Angeles - has been awarded a
$3,600 grant, the California Division-
of the American Cancer
society announced Saturday.
The society said Dr. Ryojun
Kinosita has uncovered several
phenomena on the nature, cause
and control of experimental
animal cancers. He has also ef
fected a successful chemical
treatment of a cancer in rats, the
society disclosed.

Resigns in Vancouver,

urday sought a successor to Dr.
Paul F. Gaiser, superintendent
of Vancouver schools for the
past 18 years, who announced
his resignation Friday.
Dr. Gaiser also serves as
president of Clark Junior college
in Vancouver and will devote
full time to that position after
his resignation from the super
intendent's job becomes effective
at the end of August. . 1
Dr. Gaiser, who is a native of
Portland, has headed the college
since 1945.

Earns Honors Cadet Dwight
L. Hammack, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Ward Hammack, 602 North
Riverside avenue, a student at
Wentworth Military academy,
Lexington, Mo., earned academic
honors for the first six weeks
of the present semester at the
academy, according to an acad
emy release. This qualifies him
for distinction on the dean's list
and to receive extra privileges.
To qualify he demonstrated su
periority in academic work and
excelled in at least two sub
jects. In Korea Robert Stuart, an
Army private first class and son
of Mr. and Mrs. Miles Stuart,
1029 Queen Anne avenue, is
now in Korea with the headquar
ters and headquarters company,
chief of staff, 25th division, ac
cording to news received by his
family. At the present time he
is assigned to driving army of
ficers to and from front lines.
Some time ago he requested his
family to send him a subscription
to The Medford Mail Tribune.
He wrote repeatedly that no is
sues had arrived. Finally 23
papers came in one day's mail.
He told his parents "It was an
awful lot of reading for one
time, but it least it was news
about the home folks."

from its associate, Westcoast
Transmission Co., Ltd., which
has fuel in Alberta and British
Columbia, Canada.
277-Mile Lin
Under the new plan the Amer
ican company would build a 277
mile main line from the interna
tional boundary near Sumas,
Wash., to Portland. It would
have short branches to Belling
ham, Mt Vernon, Everett Belle
vue, Seattle, Tacoma - Olympia,
Centralia - Chehalis, and Kelso
Longview, all in Washington,
and St. Helens in Oregon.
The proposed line would have
a capacity of 80,000,000 cubic
feet daily at first and 200,000,000
cubic feet eventually.
Planned Two Lines
Originally Westcoast planned
to build two main lines the
Sumas-Portland line and another
extending from Osoyoos, British
Columbia, to serve both Spokane
and the atomic energy plant at
Hanford, Wash. The project
would cost $25,690,000 and
would have a capacity of 221,
000,000 cubic feet of gas daily in
its fifth year of operation.
The amended application said
another company, Trans-Northwest
Gas, Inc., will file an appli
cation . with the FPC seeking
authority to build a line to serve
Spokane and the Hanford plant.
Engineer's Parachute

B-36 flight engineer appealed to
north side Spokane residents
Saturday to help him locate his
parachute.
The officer, who asked to re
main anonyomus, said he climb
ed down into a narrow wheel
well Thursday night while hit
plane was preparing for a land
ing. The chute got away, and
opened by the wind, floated
gently to earth.
The bomber engineer faces the
prospect of finding the chute or
paying $200 to replace it Hie
flier said he was unable to ex

New Mayor's Campaign
Expenses Were $54,000

Allan Pomeroy spent $54,000 in
his preelection campaigns, es
corting to affidavits filed with
the city comptroller. .
Mayor William F. Devin said
his total expenses for the prim
ary and final campaigns were
144,000.
Pomeroy said his campaign
contributions totaled $31,000.
The election winner took the
formal oath of office in the city
hall Friday, but he will not take
over his municipal duties until

Large Tunnel To Feed
Water Into Ontario
Niagara Falls, Ont. (U.R) A
tunnel large enough to "swal
low" a four-story building,
stretching for more than five
miles, will be built to feed water
into Ontario Hydro's new gen
erating plant at Queenston, Ont.
The $182,000,000 power proj
ect, expected to stretch over the
next four years, is one of the
largest engineering jobs in the
world today. When completed,
the new underground waterway
will be the largest of its kind
anywhere.
The development involves, be
sides construction of the long
pressure tunnel, the building of
an open-cut canal about two and
one-half miles long and the erec
tion of a generating station with
seven 100,000-horsepower units
giving a total output of 525,000
kilowatts.
It was made possible last year
when the United States and
Canada signed a 50-year treaty.
After sufficient water has been
provided to assure the scenic
character of the majectic falls,
the two countries share the re
mainder. '
