To Fit Elizabeth's Crown

wears a crown."
The crown doesn't lie so
asily, either, unless it fits.
The fashionable hatters along
London's expensive Bond Street
are wondering who is going to
get the job of making England's
ponderous imperial crown sit
easily on the head of young
Queen Elizabeth II at the coro
nation next year.
No one knows yet, but heavily
tipped is the firm of Herbert
Johnson, hatters to Edward VII,
George V and George VI.
Actually, two crowns are used
at the coronation. Edward the
Confessor's known as the Crown
of England, and the imperial
itate crown, will both be worn.
The Confessor's crown may
not be worn outside Westmin
ster Abbey, so Queen Elizabeth
will have to wear the imperial
crown the rest of the day. It
weighs more than five pounds,
complete with its 2,700 diamonds
and other gems.

make it comfortable. The crown
is the same -worn since Vic
toria's reign. Befor that, each
king had one made specially for
himself. It is completely circu
lar, looks top heavy and has to
sit at just the right angle to
give that air of regal dignity.
An expert at Johnsons said the
crown probably would be fitted
in the same way as British
guardsmen's steel helmets. The
inside would be lined with soft
chamois leather and four silk
pads will anchor it at four places
on the queen's head. A fold of
soft velvet added to the lining
will give an extra grip on the
hair.
The crown is so heavy that if
it rested on the queen's forehead
it would give her a royal-size
headache, he explained.
Alfred he's the amateur cook
who burnt the cakes had a
crown made of gold wire but it
was destroyed with the original
crown of Edward the Confessor
at the time of Cromwell's com
monwealth. England had no king
then. The present crown of Eng
land is a copy made from mem
ory of the original, lost in 1661.
Some say the original was not
destroyed but hidden away. His
torians say it must have been
well hidden as there is no trace
of it.
Incidents in Past
The chances are small that the
coronation ceremony next year
will be marred by any incidents.
But the 1,000 year history of
the event has had its moments.
William the Conqueror didn't
take any chances on one of his
new subjects ramming the crown
over his ears so he crowned him
self after his invasion from Nor
mandy. One king never made it at all.
He was 13-year-old Edward V,
who was murdered in the Tower
of London, along with his broth
er, by his uncle, the Duke of
Gloucester.
Charles I started off on the
wrong foot by going to West
minster Abbey already crowned
before being anointed, a breach
of accepted procedure. He wore
white, a sign of mourning, in
stead of purple and complained
of the weight of the crown.
Sermon Prophetic
Then, to make his day com
plete, the Archbishop of Canter
bury preached a sermon on the
text "be thou faithful unto death:
and I will give thee a crown
of eternal life."
Charles had his head chopped
off in 1649.
James II didn't have much
better luck. The crown tottered
on his head during the ceremony.
His adviser, Sydney, steadied it
and whispered in his ear: "this
is not the first time my family
have supported the crown."
A diamond fell out of George
ni's crown as he was going to
Westminster. Later, when the
American revolution started,
wiseacres wagged their heads
solemnly and said "we told you
so.

Dime Supper Planned
By Degree of Honor
Tuesday Night of Hall
Final plans for the Degree
of Honor "dime supper" were
made at a meeting of Carnation
Club of the lodge held at the
home of Mrs. Virgil Bower, 729
West 13 street, last week.
Date set for the supper is
Tuesday March 25 at 6 p.m. in
the KP hall on North Grape
street. Members and their fam
ilies, friends and anyone inter
ested in "dining out" on "dime
servings" may attend. The fare
will be served cafeteria style,
featuring ham as the main item.
Mrs. Al Boswell, president of
the association, announced an
open meeting and entertainment
for guests following the supper.

refreshments at tables decorated
in an Easter motif. Eighteen
members were present

Senator To Speak
For Prospect PTA;
To Hold Election
Prospect Ben Day, state sen
ator from, Medford, will address
members of Prospect - Parent
Teacher association when they
meet Tuesday, March 23, at 6:30
p. m. for a potluck supper. He
will speak on those Issues which
will be up for vote at the gen
eral election and will answer
questions from the audience.
. The nominating committee
will report and election of ( of
ficers for the coming year will
take place.
Those planning to attend and
who have not been contacted
are requested to take a hot dish
and salad in addition to their
own table service. Child care
will be provided during the
business meeting.
Both members and anyone
else interested are invited to at
tend, and the president points
out that the meeting la an im
portant one.
The executive board of the as
sociation met March 18 at the
home of Mrs. Archie McKillop.
Final plans were made for the
regular meeting of the organiza
tion March 25 and for the show
presented at Prospect Commun
ity hall March 20. A report was
given by the nominating com
mittee to the group.

Initiates Candidate
Mrs. Opal Baker was initi
ated into the Olive Rebekah
lodge Monday evening and Mrs.
Frances Lofland was transferred
into the lodge as a new member
here.
The meeting was conducted by
Mrs. Alfred Schroeder, noble
grand, and business of the eve
ning included an affirmative
vote for the lodge to give con
tributions of money to the Red
Cross and the Oregon Society of
Crippled Children and Adults.
Mrs. John Novak was a guest.
She is a past noble grand of
the Gold Hill lodge.
Refreshments were served.

Shady Cove Grange will meet
Wednesday, March 26, with a
pot-luck supper at 6:30 p.m. and
business meeting at 8 p.m. All
those whose birthdays occurred
during this quarter will be hon

Lake Creek Graafe
At the last meeting of Lake
Creek Grange there were 21
members and 40 visitors present.
Eagle Point Grange drill team
gave 31 new members the third
and fourth degrees The team
with Drill Master Mrs. Rosa
Smith, gave a perfectly executed
drill.
It is requested that all mem
bers send in their dues before
March 31. We are working to
ward geting a pennant from the
State Grange again this year.
Merton Bradshaw, of the agri
culture committee, reported on
the high price of hay and its
scarcity.
. We are sorry to hear of the Ill
ness of Helen Woolfolk, wffe of
Master Ira Woolfolk. She ia in
Sacred Heart hospital and all
hope that she will soon recover. .

that the next recreation party
will be held March 29.

To Be Crater PTA Topic
Central Point Crater High
School Parent-Teacher associa
tion will meet Monday, March
24 at 7:30 p. m. in the high
school cafetorium. The program
will be highlighted by a panel
discussion on "Grading Systems
Used in the Schools."
Parents will be represented on
the panel by Mrs. Norman Gail
and C. B. Cordy. The teachers'
viewpoint will be persented by
Miss Martha Boshears and Her
bert Elliott, and the student
body will be represented by two
students yet to be chdsen.
The musical program will
consist of numbers by the mu
sic department of the high school
and group singing led by Mrs.

Entertains Members
Of Shady Cove Group
Prospect The auxiliary of
Prospect Lions club met at the
Community club March 12.
The meeting honored the Sha
dy Cove Lions auxiliary, spon
sored by the Prospect group.
Following a brief business
meeting, the president, Mrs.
Roscoe Larsoat, introduced spe
cial guests of the evening, Mrs.
Al Crose and Mrs. Clarence
Humble, president and first vice
president respectively of the
state auxiliary.
Mrs. Humble took charge of
installing officers for the Shady
Cove club.
Due to the illness of Mrs.
Louis Jantzer, Mrs. Ted Jantzer
waa installed, by proxy, as
president Others taking office
were Mrs. Carter Wocd, vice
president; Mrs. Don Harmon,
treasurer; Mrs. Gus Olson, sec
retary, and Mrs. Delbert Spain,
lion trainer.

the installation ceremonies.

newly formed group with their
charter, and a bouquet from the
state organization. Officers' pins

To Honor Team, Patrol
Monday night, March 24, will
be family night at Oak Grove,
school. A potluck dinner win be
served at 6:30 p. m., followed by
the honoring of district cham
pion basketball team, safety pa
trols, and Boy and Girl Scout or
ganizations. A film of school ac
tivities for the school year will
be shown.
During the regular PTA busi
ness session election of officers
for the coming year will be held.

the March meeting.
Project lesson for the day,
"Kitchen Storage" -was present
ed by Miss Eula Wintermote,
county agent Miss Wintermote
showed slides of homes with be
fore and after scenes of storage
problems. The use of step shelves
and upright dividers as shown to
make more cupboard space and
easier accessabillty to utensils.
Pamphlets to help the member
with their own storage problems
were distributed.
Twenty-four members and one
visitor, Mrs. Edgar Squire, were
present.
A committee was appointed to
nominate the officers for the
year. Program planning for the
year was voted on by the mem
bers. The next meeting will be at
